generation, and not all live up to them. Nor should the reader assume that<br />

a Veteran cannot be an optimist or that a Baby Boomer is always seeking<br />

personal gratification over being honorable. It does imply that there is a<br />

definite difference in the average Veteran and the average Baby Boomer.<br />

The sharp contrast in core values represents the seminal events that<br />

impacted their collective lives, amplified by an increase in global<br />

communications and television broadcasts around the country and the<br />

world in particular.<br />

Heroes<br />

Every generation has its heroes. Veterans lived through national and<br />

international crises that threatened their fundamental needs. President<br />

Franklin D. Roosevelt displayed incredible leadership to pull a nation<br />

through the Great Depression, initiate the <strong>New</strong> Deal, show stoic resolve<br />

following Pearl Harbor, and provide steadfast world leadership in World<br />

War II. Fittingly, Veterans identify with men tested on the field of battle,<br />

sports icons, national leaders, and Superman (Table 3). 21 Military legends<br />

such as General George C. Marshall; General Dwight D. Eisenhower;<br />

Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr; and General Douglas MacArthur provided<br />

Veterans with noble goals, a clear path, and unwavering efforts toward<br />

eradicating fascism and rebuilding Germany and Japan.<br />

The world became even smaller through exponential advances in<br />

transcontinental aviation, trade, and communications. The United Nations<br />

grew out of the ashes of the League of Nations as the international<br />

governing body dedicated to providing a worldwide forum for<br />

international law, trade, and security. Liberalism enjoyed a Renaissance<br />

of unprecedented proportions as numerous enlightened events took place.<br />

Colonies of former empires sought and achieved independence. True<br />

advances in civil rights of all peoples were made and codified in law. The<br />

women’s liberation movement broke many barriers in many cultures. And<br />

incredible technological developments sent men to the moon and returned<br />

them safely to the earth. Baby Boomers who joined the military did so<br />

with great shoes to fill and high expectations. Selfless and visionary, they
