Street House and attached Street House Cottage<br />

House and Cottage. Early C17 house with alterations, late C18 cottage. Coursed rubble with dressed stone to<br />

cottage. Stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. Two storeys. South elevation has addition to left end with 2 bays <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows with<br />

pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds and slightly project<strong>in</strong>g sills. Break <strong>in</strong> stonework. Similar bay <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows. 4-light doublechamfered<br />

mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow to left <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>serted French w<strong>in</strong>dow. Two C18 w<strong>in</strong>dows over to 1 st floor. Quo<strong>in</strong>s<br />

at junction with end bay which breaks forward slightly and has 2 chamfered w<strong>in</strong>dows formerly <strong>of</strong> 2 lights<br />

lack<strong>in</strong>g mullions with a stepped light opened between. Coped gables with kneelers and stacks, 2 other stacks to<br />

ridge. Right return wall has 2-light chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows to 1st floor. The rear has C18 doorway with<br />

raised monolithic jambs to left <strong>of</strong> outshut with 3-light double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow. Set <strong>in</strong> the angle<br />

between is segmental bow with tall chamfered light to light spiral (possibly stone) staircase.<br />

Interior <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> room has wide segmental-arched fireplace with joggled voussoirs and skewbacks.<br />

Barn 10 metres to north <strong>of</strong> Street House<br />

Rubble brought to course, dressed quo<strong>in</strong>s, stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. Wide segmental-arched cart entry. L<strong>in</strong>tel formed <strong>of</strong><br />

2 stones, composite jambs. Mistal doorway at lower level to right has quo<strong>in</strong>ed l<strong>in</strong>tel. Three large w<strong>in</strong>dows at 1<br />

st-floor level. Coped gables with kneelers. Left hand return wall has tak<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>in</strong> door with tiestone jambs and date<br />

stone set <strong>in</strong> recess <strong>in</strong> gable. Three-bay <strong>in</strong>terior with k<strong>in</strong>g-post ro<strong>of</strong> braced to ridge. Included for group value.<br />

Dovecote. Late C18, probably contemporary with nearby barn (q.v.) which is dated 1779. Random rubble,<br />

dressed quo<strong>in</strong>s. Stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. S<strong>in</strong>gle-storey. South elevation has w<strong>in</strong>dow with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds. Right<br />

hand gable has rectangular w<strong>in</strong>dow with arched l<strong>in</strong>tel over which is columbarium. Included for group value.<br />

Hammer-dressed stone, dressed quo<strong>in</strong>s, stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. Two storeys. Two-cell plan with small rooms to rear


and with gable-entry orig<strong>in</strong>ally. Double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows. Two-light fire-w<strong>in</strong>dow; 4-light<br />

housebody w<strong>in</strong>dow; <strong>in</strong>serted C19 doorway with monolithic jambs with chamfered surround; 3-light w<strong>in</strong>dow. 1<br />

st floor has altered C 19 w<strong>in</strong>dow and 2 <strong>of</strong> 3 lights. All lack mullions. Gable stacks. Left hand return wall has<br />

lean-to with C17 doorway with composite jambs and chamfered surround, the lean-to built over orig<strong>in</strong>al door<br />

entry. Rear, orig<strong>in</strong>ally s<strong>in</strong>gle-storey raised to 2 storeys early C19. Two-light chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow<br />

(moved from gable when extension as added) to left <strong>of</strong> 2-light double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow. Doorway<br />

with monolithic jambs. 1 st floor has 2 w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds.<br />

Interior: has heck-screen and post with stop chamfers for former bressumer (removed); scarf jo<strong>in</strong>ted sp<strong>in</strong>e<br />

beams.<br />

Mid-C20 extension to right not <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

Lower Gate Cr<strong>of</strong>t<br />

House. Mid C17 with C1745 alterations (date on door jamb). Rubble brought to course, dressed quo<strong>in</strong>s, stone<br />

slate ro<strong>of</strong>. 2 storeys, 4 1st floor w<strong>in</strong>dows. Orig<strong>in</strong>al doorway with composite jambs and Tudorarched l<strong>in</strong>tel has<br />

stop-chamfered surround and sunken spandrels. To left <strong>of</strong> door late C19 sash w<strong>in</strong>dow with same over to 1 st<br />

floor. Central doorway with monolithic jambs set between 5-light double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows with<br />

almost square reveals and lowered sills (lack 2 mullions). 1 st floor has 3 chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows, with<br />

C1743 l<strong>in</strong>tels when ro<strong>of</strong> and w<strong>in</strong>dows were raised, 2 <strong>of</strong> 3 lights one <strong>of</strong> 4 lights. Left bay has lower ro<strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e that<br />

rest <strong>of</strong> house which has gable stacks. Outshut to rear has lean-to ro<strong>of</strong> and chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows, s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

light and 2-light. Left hand return wall has pl<strong>in</strong>th and doorway (blocked) with punch dressed l<strong>in</strong>tel to left <strong>of</strong> 2light<br />

chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow (one light blocked). Same over to 1 st floor (bl<strong>in</strong>d).<br />

Interior: housebody has C18 segmental-arched fireplace with f<strong>in</strong>ely-jo<strong>in</strong>ed joggled voussoirs and large<br />

keystone, raised jambs, chamfered surround. Beehive oven set with<strong>in</strong> to right hand side.<br />

cantilevered stones butt-jo<strong>in</strong>ed, composite jambs. Mistal doorway to right has dated l<strong>in</strong>tel and chamfered<br />

surround. Rear has central doorway with tie stone jambs and chamfered surround with crude hood formed by<br />

3 slates carry<strong>in</strong>g a 4th slate. Gables have square breather holes and triangular owlhole to apex <strong>of</strong> left hand<br />

return wall.<br />

Quo<strong>in</strong>s. 2 storeys with attic. Orig<strong>in</strong>al house has double-depth 2-room front with central lobby-entry aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

stack. Doorway has f<strong>in</strong>ely-moulded eared architrave with date stone over. Over, to 1 st floor, is oculus with 2piece<br />

moulded architrave. To either side flat-faced mullion w<strong>in</strong>dows with <strong>in</strong>ner chamfer and raised surrounds <strong>of</strong><br />

4-lights to left and 3-light to right. Central stack. Addition has doorway with monolithic jambs and 2 bays <strong>of</strong><br />

square w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds. Coped gables with kneelers. Rear has 2 bays <strong>of</strong> double-chamfered<br />

mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows with almost square reveals <strong>of</strong> 3 lights. Left hand bay has a 2-light flat-faced mullioned<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>in</strong>serted on ground floor. Central 2-light w<strong>in</strong>dow at mezzan<strong>in</strong>e level probably to light stair, with small<br />

chamfered light to 1 st floor. Addition has doorway to 1 st floor with monolithic jambs, approached up a flight<br />

<strong>of</strong> 4 stone steps. Left return has doorway with composite jambs and chamfered surround which rises to form<br />

false ogee l<strong>in</strong>tel. 2-light chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow to attic.<br />

Interior: not <strong>in</strong>spected but is said to have f<strong>in</strong>e arched fireplace. RCHM (England) report.<br />

Add<strong>in</strong>gham Moorside (on Moorside Lane) Fell Edge Farmhouse<br />

House. Late C17. Large dressed stone, stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. 2 storeys. 2-cell direct end-lobby entry plan with<br />

outshut or aisle to rear under cat-slide ro<strong>of</strong>. Doorway with shaped l<strong>in</strong>tel has chamfered surround that rises<br />

to form a false ogee. This is covered by mid-C20 gabled stone porch. All are double-chamfered mullioned<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows with all mullions removed, orig<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>of</strong> 4 lights and 3 lights. 2 stacks to ridge.<br />

Interior: stop-chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams and floor joists. One ro<strong>of</strong> purl<strong>in</strong> has ½-lap jo<strong>in</strong>t re-used from earlier<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Rubble brought to course, rough dressed quo<strong>in</strong>s, stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. Barn occupies ¾ <strong>of</strong> the range; 2½ storey<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle-cell double-depth cottage with added cell under lower ro<strong>of</strong> late C19. Barn to left has segmentalarched<br />

cart entry formed by 2 large cantilevered stones butt-jo<strong>in</strong>ted, and with quo<strong>in</strong>ed angle leads <strong>in</strong>to portal with tall<br />

square-headed entry to barn. Mistal doorway to left has deep l<strong>in</strong>tel and composite jambs with chamfered<br />

surround. Cottage slightly set back has doorway with tie-stone jambs and chamfered surround that rises to<br />

form false ogee l<strong>in</strong>tel which bears date. Large s<strong>in</strong>gle lights with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds and overlapp<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>tel.<br />

Left return (<strong>of</strong> barn) has 2 square pitch<strong>in</strong>g-holes with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds. Rear; barn has doorway opposite<br />

cart entry; cottage has small stair-light.<br />

Interior: barn has k<strong>in</strong>g-post truss braced to ridge. RCHM (England) report.

lights and 4 lights both lack<strong>in</strong>g 2 mullions. 1st floor has 2 square C19 w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds.<br />

Added porch to right hand return wall flush with front has doorway with monolithic jambs. Left hand return<br />

wall has orig<strong>in</strong>al doorway with composite jambs and chamfered surround (altered to form w<strong>in</strong>dow). Coped<br />

gables with shaped kneelers. 2 stacks to ridge.<br />

mullion to right. Coped gables with kneelers. Central stack ridge. Rear has 2 bays <strong>of</strong> 2-light chamfered<br />

mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows flank<strong>in</strong>g a 2-light staircase w<strong>in</strong>dow.


Interior: Front rooms have stop-chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams and floor joists. That to right has segmentalarched<br />

fireplace formed by 3 stones, the central one a joggled keystone, the jambs with raised panel.<br />

plan, now <strong>of</strong> 3 cells with an outshut and stair-turret to rear. 3 bays <strong>of</strong> chamfered-mullioned multi-light<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows all C1970. Doorway to right-hand end has basket-arched doorway reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>al date <strong>in</strong>scription set<br />

<strong>in</strong> a shield, over which is small chamfered light with arched head. 3 ridge stacks. Rear has chamfered doorway<br />

set <strong>in</strong> outshut. Set <strong>in</strong> angle <strong>of</strong> house and outshut is a 2-storey stair tower circular on plan with 2 chamfered lights.<br />

Interior: Housebody has large stack and wide segmental-arched fireplace with skewbacks and broad chamfered<br />

surround. Lobby lit <strong>in</strong>ternally by narrow chamfered light. Stop-chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beam and floor joists. Stone<br />

steps <strong>of</strong> spiral staircase renewed.<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> which survives <strong>in</strong>side. To left, 3-light doublechamfered mullion w<strong>in</strong>dow with 4-light w<strong>in</strong>dow over,<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>of</strong> 2 lights. Glass porch cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>serted doorway has monolithic jambs with to its right a 3-light<br />

stepped, flat-faced mullion w<strong>in</strong>dow with 4-light chamfered-mullion w<strong>in</strong>dow above. To right, 3-light stepped<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow to both floors. Left hand return wall has coped gable with kneelers at different angle to tabl<strong>in</strong>g perhaps<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that it has been moved and had a front fac<strong>in</strong>g gable orig<strong>in</strong>ally. Rear has doorway with monolithic<br />

jambs to left <strong>of</strong> small chamfered light for staircase. To right 3-light w<strong>in</strong>dow with cavetto-moulded mullion.<br />

Interior: Central room has C18 fireplace with segmental-arched l<strong>in</strong>tel. Ro<strong>of</strong> has purl<strong>in</strong>s with ½-lap jo<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

reused from earlier build<strong>in</strong>g.

Interior: 3 bays with simple angle-strut trusses either side <strong>of</strong> central thresh<strong>in</strong>g area.

Large roughly dressed stone to ground floor, smaller regular coursed stone above ground floor w<strong>in</strong>dows,<br />

stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. 2-room front with small service room to rear <strong>of</strong> parlour, kitchen w<strong>in</strong>g at right angles to<br />

housebody. Quo<strong>in</strong>s. Double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow formerly <strong>of</strong> 4 lights has C19 l<strong>in</strong>tel to parlour; 4-light<br />

double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow (lack<strong>in</strong>g 2 mullions) with hoodmould over the straight return to<br />

housebody. 1 st floor has 2 C19 w<strong>in</strong>dows with l<strong>in</strong>tels dressed with marg<strong>in</strong> as parlour w<strong>in</strong>dow. Porch breaks<br />

forward under cat-slide ro<strong>of</strong> with ma<strong>in</strong> range, doorway with quo<strong>in</strong>ed l<strong>in</strong>tel and broad stop-chamfered<br />

surround. Inner doorway has 2-piece depressed Tudor-arched l<strong>in</strong>tel with sunken spandrels and chamfered<br />

surround, over is chamfered light with segmental-arched l<strong>in</strong>tel with spandrels. Barn breaks forward. Porch<br />

over cart entry rises out <strong>of</strong> aisles. Mistal doorways to right with composite jambs. Coped gables with kneelers<br />

to house, which has dressed C18 stack, and barn. Rear has 2-light chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow for service<br />

room with break <strong>in</strong> stonework above where house was raised. Rear w<strong>in</strong>g has watershot masonry, C17 coped<br />

gable with C19 stack. Side wall has a 4-light flat-faced mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow to each floor with <strong>in</strong>ner chamfer;<br />

mid C20 outshut with similar w<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>in</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Interior: Rear door, now enclosed <strong>in</strong> outshut, has broad chamfered surround and damaged tudor-arched<br />

l<strong>in</strong>tel, perhaps <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g it has been moved, the l<strong>in</strong>tel carved <strong>in</strong> relief.<br />

This leads <strong>in</strong>to rear kitchen with broad chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams one <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that it is a bressumer. Stone<br />

staircase enclosed <strong>in</strong> oak-panelled well. Rear w<strong>in</strong>g has f<strong>in</strong>e k<strong>in</strong>g-post truss with stop-chamfered k<strong>in</strong>g-post<br />

and s<strong>in</strong>gle-angle struts. Housebody has basket-arched fireplace with broad chamfered surround, <strong>in</strong>ner<br />

beehive oven, stone l<strong>in</strong>ed. Stop-chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams and floor joists. Chamfered fireplace <strong>in</strong> upper<br />

chamber. Parlour has chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beam rest<strong>in</strong>g on beam over w<strong>in</strong>dow. Barn has s<strong>of</strong>twood ro<strong>of</strong> with<br />

fish-bone k<strong>in</strong>g-post trusses. Earlier ro<strong>of</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle-storey house visible. There is a doorway (blocked from<br />

house direct to barn plac<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> the long-house tradition.

Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate ro<strong>of</strong>. Quo<strong>in</strong>s. 2 storeys. 2-room front, double-depth with central lobby<br />

entry. Doorway with ogee l<strong>in</strong>tel and cyma moulded surround has date plaque over with cont<strong>in</strong>uous drip<br />

mould which steps over doorway. To either side double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dows with lower sills.<br />

Ground floor has 3 wide lights, 1st floor 3-light and 4-light w<strong>in</strong>dows. Square gutter brackets. Coped gables<br />

with kneelers and stacks. One other central stack to ridge.<br />

Interior: Housebody has chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams with jewelled stops. Wide segmental-arched fireplace with<br />

cyma moulded surround and joggled voussoirs with to left, orig<strong>in</strong>al carved oak cupboard with lozenge<br />

decoration <strong>in</strong>itialled and dated "TIR 1698".<br />

lack all mullions. Altered w<strong>in</strong>dow to right. 1 st floor has 2 w<strong>in</strong>dows formerly <strong>of</strong> 3 lights. Right hand gable<br />

partly rebuilt but cours<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> stones perhaps <strong>in</strong>dicates a cruck truss <strong>of</strong> which there is now no other evidence.<br />

right: under lower ro<strong>of</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e. C17 doorway with composite jambs and deep l<strong>in</strong>tel with broad stopchamfered<br />

surround. Barn porch breaks forward, added aisle with tall doorway between with monolithic l<strong>in</strong>tel with<br />

timber jo<strong>in</strong>ts for harr-hung door. Another C17 doorway (probably re-used) to mistal at right hand end. Rear<br />

Rear has late C18 lean-to with 2-light flat-faced mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow with <strong>in</strong>ner chamfer and, right, doorway with<br />

monolithic jambs. Reused double-chamfered mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow from dairy now demolished. S<strong>in</strong>gle stack to<br />

ridge at junction with C19 addition.<br />

Interior: Baffle-entry to ma<strong>in</strong> room with stop-chamfered floor joists and sp<strong>in</strong>e beams which have scarf jo<strong>in</strong>ts,<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> former bressumer and fire-hood. The extensions to sp<strong>in</strong>e beams are supported on wooden corbel<br />

over late C18 fireplace with monolithic jambs. Rear room, <strong>in</strong> outshut, has stone staircase. Attached to left is<br />

C18 barn converted to form extra accommodation and to right late C19 addition, neither <strong>of</strong> particular <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

Interior: Much early C18 panell<strong>in</strong>g rema<strong>in</strong>s with pilasters and multi-panelled overmantels. The westernmost<br />

parlour reta<strong>in</strong>s its orig<strong>in</strong>al decoration with bolection-moulded marble fireplace surround flanked by pairs <strong>of</strong><br />

fluted composite pilasters. These are balanced by pairs on every wall. Richly-decorated cornice, casement<br />

mould<strong>in</strong>g, egg-and-dart, dentils and pulv<strong>in</strong>ated frieze. Completely panelled with raised panels and moulded rail.<br />

Partitioned ceil<strong>in</strong>g has foliated surrounds to the panels. Other rooms and stair-hall have ma<strong>in</strong>ly C19 decoration<br />

with Greek Key motifs predom<strong>in</strong>ant. The orig<strong>in</strong>al stair survives. This is very f<strong>in</strong>e and has openwell,<br />

cantilevered with 3 slender turned balusters to each tread: one pla<strong>in</strong> turned baluster, one twisted, one twisted <strong>of</strong><br />

2 strands; a moulded swept handrail, open str<strong>in</strong>g and slender newels. The orig<strong>in</strong>al service- stair is divided from<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> stair by a walled partition. This has closed str<strong>in</strong>g, fluted newels, moulded handrail, turned balusters and<br />

rises to the attic. 1 st floor reta<strong>in</strong>s much orig<strong>in</strong>al panell<strong>in</strong>g and 2 fireplaces with Delft tiles. The music room has<br />

C20 contemporary decoration <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g the Greek key motif. Attic <strong>of</strong> kitchen w<strong>in</strong>g reveals earliest feature<br />

<strong>of</strong> house: - an upper cruck-truss dat<strong>in</strong>g from C16, with a k<strong>in</strong>g-post truss scarfed on to the top <strong>of</strong> it when the ro<strong>of</strong><br />

was altered early C18. The orig<strong>in</strong>al bell from the ro<strong>of</strong> is now housed <strong>in</strong> the cellar and has dated <strong>in</strong>scription <strong>in</strong><br />

relieve “MAKE NO DELAY AIR 1722 (OR 9) COME AWAY”.<br />

between. Surmounted by f<strong>in</strong>ely sculptured urns. Those to west are square on plan with cornice surmounted<br />

by obelisk. L<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g walls to 3 sides, enclos<strong>in</strong>g garden, have chamfered cop<strong>in</strong>gs which ramp to south. This is<br />

broken by stone summer-house with monopitched ro<strong>of</strong> with ½ coped gables with kneelers. This has<br />

semicircular-arched doorway with rusticated voussoirs and quo<strong>in</strong>s. Set <strong>in</strong> north wall is doorway with<br />

semicircular arch with keystone and cyma-moulded surround. Wooden doorcase with open-spoked fan-light<br />

with turned balusters and 8-panelled door.<br />

impost blocks, keystone and fanlights <strong>in</strong> 3rd, 6th, 9th and 13th bays. Match<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>dows with smallpaned<br />

glaz<strong>in</strong>g and fanlights <strong>in</strong> 2nd, 4th and 5th, 7th and 8th, 9th and 12th bays. 1 st floor has keyed oculus <strong>in</strong> 1 st,<br />

piers, square on plan, have cornice surmounted by crudely sculpted p<strong>in</strong>eapple f<strong>in</strong>ials. Walls have flat cop<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

with ramp over f<strong>in</strong>e orig<strong>in</strong>al C18 ashlar doorway with bolection-moulded eared architrave and segmental<br />

pediment. Rebate for door on outer face with flight <strong>of</strong> 3 stone steps approach<strong>in</strong>g it. Set on wall over doorway<br />

is p<strong>in</strong>eapple f<strong>in</strong>ial. Set <strong>in</strong> west wall, which is stone-l<strong>in</strong>ed, is pla<strong>in</strong> doorway lead<strong>in</strong>g to farm build<strong>in</strong>gs (q.v.).

jambs and basket-arched l<strong>in</strong>tel has chamfered surround. Later doorways either side. 2 pitch<strong>in</strong>g holes under<br />

eaves. Barn breaks forward and has quo<strong>in</strong>ed angle. Segmental-arched cart entry with expressed keystone<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g date, composite jambs. Rectangular ventilators with arched heads to either side. Coped gables with<br />

Interiors: Cowhouse has hayl<strong>of</strong>t with 3 bays <strong>of</strong> oak k<strong>in</strong>g-post trusses with s<strong>in</strong>gle struts and convex braces to<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gle-storey. Stables have 2 sets <strong>of</strong> paired doorways with common l<strong>in</strong>tel and central monolithic jamb. 2<br />

square w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds. At right angles cartshed has 3 wide entries with monolithic<br />

jambs and l<strong>in</strong>tels with rebate for doors. Attached to west end is 3-bay build<strong>in</strong>g with doorway with tie-stone<br />

jambs, quo<strong>in</strong>ed angles, coped gable <strong>in</strong> which is set circular w<strong>in</strong>dow with 4 keystones. Piggery beh<strong>in</strong>d has<br />

small yard to front <strong>of</strong> each low build<strong>in</strong>g with small doorway. Hen-house taken out <strong>of</strong> rear <strong>of</strong> stables has<br />

nest<strong>in</strong>g boxes built <strong>in</strong>to wall. With barn dated 1783 (q.v.) forms 3 sides <strong>of</strong> an enclosed courtyard.

l<strong>in</strong>tel, harr-hung door. Doorways <strong>in</strong> re-entrant angle to mistals. Left hand return wall has breather holes,<br />

through-stones and arrow slit to apex.<br />

Interior: 4 bays with good oak ro<strong>of</strong>. Angle-strut trusses with crossed pr<strong>in</strong>cipals with straight set ridge. Those<br />

either side <strong>of</strong> thresh<strong>in</strong>g floor are carried on tall stone piers with chamfered capitals. The easternmost truss is<br />

carried on tall concave posts on padstones, braced to ridge and with aisle-ties and arcade plate rest<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

stone pier. Some reused timbers with ½ lap-jo<strong>in</strong>ts. This gives 2 bays now blocked by <strong>in</strong>serted stone walls.<br />

The posts are th<strong>in</strong> and could possibly be reused cruck blades <strong>in</strong>verted. 5 rows <strong>of</strong> purl<strong>in</strong>s to each side. An<br />

usually late aisled barn and the only one <strong>in</strong> the parish.

monolithic l<strong>in</strong>tels. Right hand return wall (<strong>of</strong> barn) has pitch<strong>in</strong>g-hole with tiestone jambs. Several project<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through stones to each gable.<br />

Interior: Housebody has ogee stop-chamfered sp<strong>in</strong>e beams, fireplace with project<strong>in</strong>g chamfered shelf, stone<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ed bee-hive oven. Rear service room has simple stop-chamfered beam. 3-bay barn with angle-strut truss,<br />

the pr<strong>in</strong>cipals united by collar from which spr<strong>in</strong>gs a short k<strong>in</strong>g-post support<strong>in</strong>g a diamond set ridge. Purl<strong>in</strong>s<br />

are tenoned through the pr<strong>in</strong>cipals and secured by oak pegs. Harr-hung door.

basement and attic. 15-bays to river side <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds. Rear has 10 bays <strong>of</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows with quo<strong>in</strong>s between the 7th and 8th bays. To the northern end a w<strong>in</strong>g breaks forward. This has<br />

later C19 fenestration and is <strong>of</strong> less <strong>in</strong>terest. Left hand return wall has segmental arch for tail-goit. Right hand<br />

return wall has segmental-arched entry for mill race, w<strong>in</strong>dows with monolithic l<strong>in</strong>tels and sills. Is said to have<br />

had 2 waterwheels, one <strong>in</strong> use until 1919.<br />

Interior: Ground floor forms Sunday School with stage and cast-iron columns support<strong>in</strong>g 1st-floor hall<br />

which reta<strong>in</strong>s orig<strong>in</strong>al p<strong>in</strong>e furniture. Ceil<strong>in</strong>g has 4 foliated plaster light bosses surround<strong>in</strong>g larger central<br />

mid-C20 porch obscur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>serted C18 doorway to left <strong>of</strong> 2-light flat-faced mullioned w<strong>in</strong>dow with same<br />

above with slightly recessed mullion. Added cell to west (No 6) has s<strong>in</strong>gle-light w<strong>in</strong>dow to each floor with<br />

dressed l<strong>in</strong>tels and sills. Doorway for No 6 at rear has monolithic jambs and similar w<strong>in</strong>dow to front. Coped<br />

gables with kneelers and stacks, one other stack to ridge.<br />

Interior: Housebody has scarf-jo<strong>in</strong>ted sp<strong>in</strong>e beam, evidence <strong>of</strong> former bressumer and firehood; there is also a<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>g break <strong>in</strong> the ridge. Stop-chamfered floor-joists. Unusual queen-post truss with cambered collar<br />

from which rises short k<strong>in</strong>g post with convex brace to ridge.<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds but most widened with altered glaz<strong>in</strong>g. Rear much altered with segmental<br />

bow w<strong>in</strong>dows C1980 <strong>in</strong>serted out <strong>of</strong> sympathy. Only the doorways survive. Coped gables with kneelers, 2<br />

stacks and the rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> gable stack to road. With Nos 36 to 42 (even) it forms a pair <strong>of</strong> early back-to-back<br />

surrounds, the l<strong>in</strong>tels with tooled decoration. Same over to 1 st floor. Left-hand return wall has coped gable<br />

and stone stack. 2 other brick stacks to ridge. Rear has identical fenestration as front but with <strong>in</strong>serted w<strong>in</strong>dow<br />

C1984 with concrete surrounds over doorway <strong>of</strong> No 38. Loomshop has 6 doorways with monolithic jambs to<br />

Interior: No 42 reta<strong>in</strong>s orig<strong>in</strong>al narrow staircase set between the back-to-back wall and 2 orig<strong>in</strong>al simple<br />

fireplaces with raised monolithic jambs, one with basket-grate. An important example <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g class<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g, reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the most part its orig<strong>in</strong>al fenestration.<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>al doorway set between 2nd and 3rd bay has monolithic jambs and triangular chamfered hood the<br />

tympanum bear<strong>in</strong>g date. Gable stacks and 2 others to ridge.<br />

surrounds. Pl<strong>in</strong>th. Semicircular-arched doorway with keystone, impost block and monolithic jambs and<br />

fanlight with glaz<strong>in</strong>g bars. Tall rectangular w<strong>in</strong>dows with pla<strong>in</strong> stone surrounds, shorter to 2nd floor. All<br />

have altered glaz<strong>in</strong>g. Attached to left is added bay with scattered fenestration. Gable stacks and one other<br />

centrally placed to ridge. Rear has centrally placed stairw<strong>in</strong>dow with same details as front doorway. Reta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

small-paned glaz<strong>in</strong>g. Right-hand return wall has small circular glazed wheel w<strong>in</strong>dow to 2nd floor.<br />

Wesley Place<br />

George Oates Greenwood Mausoleum and<br />

Mausoleum. Dated 1845. Ashlar with surround<strong>in</strong>g stone piers and wooden fenc<strong>in</strong>g. Square on plan with<br />

batter. Pl<strong>in</strong>th, banded rustication, modillioned cornice, triangular pediment the tympanum decorated with<br />

wreath and ribbons. Doorways with eared architrave set <strong>in</strong> east and west faces. 2-panelled oak doors with<br />

cast-iron grille, rectangular fanlight. The whole surmounted by large urn with corner blocks decorated with


wreaths <strong>in</strong> their card<strong>in</strong>al faces. Set <strong>in</strong> the north face is engraved tablet flanked by <strong>in</strong>verted torches. This has<br />

letter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bold relief:-<br />

Other memorials on south face to William Greenwood and his wife Ann. Surround<strong>in</strong>g fenc<strong>in</strong>g has wooden<br />

uprights and crossmembers with St Andrew's Cross set between. These are l<strong>in</strong>ked to dressed monoliths,<br />

square on plan, with arched heads and circles <strong>in</strong> relief on the card<strong>in</strong>al faces. Entered by a gate to the east.
