D. EH&S Industrial Hygiene Group<br />
The Industrial Hygiene Group, of the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Division, hosts<br />
the <strong>Respiratory</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> <strong>Program</strong>. The Industrial Hygiene Group shall:<br />
• designate a <strong>Program</strong> Administrator who is qualified by training or experience to oversee<br />
the <strong>Respiratory</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> <strong>Program</strong><br />
• stock and issue respiratory protective equipment and supplies approved by NIOSH<br />
• maintain equipment for respirator maintenance, fit-testing, and cleaning<br />
• assure that the <strong>Respiratory</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> <strong>Program</strong> is reviewed by the RPPA<br />
• assure that the <strong>Respiratory</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> <strong>Program</strong> is audited by a knowledgeable person not<br />
directly associated with the program<br />
• review contractor submittals, that are submitted to the IH Group, as specified in<br />
Appendix A<br />
E. EH&S Radiation <strong>Protection</strong> Group<br />
The Radiation <strong>Protection</strong> Group (RPG), of the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S)<br />
Division, assures that all radiological work activities at <strong>LBNL</strong> are conducted safely and in<br />
accordance with applicable DOE and other regulations. The EH&S Radiation <strong>Protection</strong> Group<br />
shall:<br />
• perform appropriate hazard evaluations<br />
• provide radiation safety training<br />
• develop applicable radiation safety authorization documents<br />
• provide all necessary field support services<br />
This is accomplished through a formal documented program at <strong>LBNL</strong> that is designed to ensure<br />
that radiation exposures are maintained as low as is reasonably achievable (ALARA). The<br />
primary mechanisms for training personnel, monitoring the workplace, controlling work<br />
activities, and maintaining radiation exposures ALARA are implemented through the<br />
authorization system, worker awareness, and the RPG's monitoring (individual and area) and<br />
surveillance activities.<br />
F. EH&S Health Services Group<br />
The Laboratory Occupational Health Physician, or other Health Services licensed health care<br />
professional, provides the medical evaluations necessary to ensure that employees are medically<br />
qualified to use a respirator. Health Services shall:<br />
• follow the guidance in the most current version of the Health Services Respirator Medical<br />
Approval <strong>Program</strong><br />
• establish health standards which shall be met by all prospective respirator users, as<br />
required by 29 CFR 1910.134, ANSI Z88.2, and ANSI Z88.6<br />
