The <strong>regulation</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>radioisotopes</strong> <strong>in</strong> today’s <strong>world</strong><br />
A process called <strong>in</strong>dustrial radiography<br />
is <strong>use</strong>d to <strong>in</strong>spect many metal<br />
parts <strong>and</strong> welds for defects. A sealed<br />
radiation source, usually Ir-192<br />
or Co-60, beams radiation at <strong>the</strong> object<br />
to be checked. Special photographic,<br />
or radiographic, film on <strong>the</strong><br />
opposite side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> source is exposed<br />
when it is struck by radiation pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />
through — like an x-ray. More radiation<br />
will pass through if <strong>the</strong>re are<br />
cracks, breaks, or o<strong>the</strong>r flaws <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
metal parts <strong>and</strong> will be recorded on <strong>the</strong><br />
film. Therefore, structural problems<br />
can be detected by study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> film.<br />
Radiography is <strong>use</strong>d throughout<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. For example, jet eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
turb<strong>in</strong>e blades are radiographed<br />
to ensure that<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternal cool<strong>in</strong>g passages<br />
are manufactured<br />
properly.<br />
The <strong>NRC</strong> or Agreement<br />
States license radiographers<br />
<strong>and</strong> periodically<br />
<strong>in</strong>spect <strong>the</strong>m to<br />
ensure <strong>the</strong>y follow safety<br />
procedures.<br />
