HOLLYWOOD’S HAUNTED CAMPUS<br />

GIVES CHILDREN A TREAT<br />

Located just a few miles from <strong>the</strong> real movie<br />

studios of Los Angeles, The Art Institute of<br />

California—Hollywood, a campus of Argosy<br />

University, had plenty of <strong>in</strong>spiration and<br />

res<strong>our</strong>ces to create its own scary Halloween<br />

set for neighbors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Hollywood<br />

Arts D<strong>is</strong>trict.<br />

To offer <strong>the</strong> community a treat, <strong>the</strong> school<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited children from Lankershim Elementary<br />

School for an afternoon party where <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

receive candy and experience <strong>the</strong> festive<br />

decorations imag<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Bachelor of Science<br />

candidates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Set & Exhibit Design program.<br />

The students demonstrated <strong>the</strong>ir technique<br />

and skill by transform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> campus entrance<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a sp<strong>in</strong>e-t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g cemetery haunted by <strong>the</strong><br />

spirits of old-generation movie stars. The team<br />

utilized tricks such as str<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g clear fi sh<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

to simulate an unexpected feel of spiderwebs<br />

and pull<strong>in</strong>g apart white yarn to create <strong>the</strong> look<br />

of <strong>the</strong> webs on headstones and o<strong>the</strong>r props.<br />

A soundtrack of ghostly screams and toll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bells also added to <strong>the</strong> scary scene. More than<br />

30 children dressed <strong>in</strong> costumes experienced<br />

chills and thrills thanks to th<strong>is</strong> spooky design<br />

d<strong>is</strong>played <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> front lobby of <strong>the</strong> campus.<br />

The fi n<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g touch was Set & Exhibit Design<br />

Academic Director Gary La Vassar himself. La<br />

Vassar jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> festivities by dress<strong>in</strong>g up as<br />

one of <strong>the</strong> creepy characters “on set” <strong>the</strong> day<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lankershim students came by. “Halloween<br />

<strong>in</strong> Hollywood <strong>is</strong> a big celebration,” he said. “Our<br />

haunted campus was a fun way to be a part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> community.”<br />
