Course Description: The basics of leather tooling (carving & stamping) will be demonstrated in this<br />
morning workshop for aspiring leather workers aged 19 <strong>and</strong> under. Then, students will receive individual<br />
h<strong>and</strong>s-on help with practicing the techniques <strong>and</strong> completing a leather project. All materials will be<br />
provided. *Pre-Registration is still required.<br />
Materials to Bring: Some stamping tools <strong>and</strong> mallet, if possible.<br />

Course Description: The saddle seat should not only be comfortable to the rider but is critical to the<br />
placement of the rider <strong>and</strong> therefore to the balance of the rider to the horse. This is important in respect<br />
to the ability to communicate to the horse through balance as well as reducing the risk of soring the<br />
horse’s back. This workshop will address reading the tree to determine how the ground seat needs to<br />
be installed to achieve the desired goals. A variety of ground seat patterns will be shown <strong>and</strong> compared.<br />
There’ll also be a discussion of the difference between a man’s <strong>and</strong> a woman’s seat <strong>and</strong> what can be<br />
done to make this seat gender specific. Two different methods of installing ground seats will be demonstrated.<br />
There will be a discussion <strong>and</strong> critique of each. Questions <strong>and</strong> input from the students will<br />
be encouraged. This workshop can be a companion workshop to “Fitting the Saddle Tree to the Horse”,<br />
or it will also work well on its own.<br />
Materials to Bring: Paper <strong>and</strong> pencil. Cameras <strong>and</strong> recorders are welcome.<br />
How to Create an Appliqué Braid Using a Single Str<strong>and</strong> Sheryl Katzke<br />

Course Description: Students will learn how to create a design with an appliqué braid using the<br />
single str<strong>and</strong> center braid technique. Additionally, you’ll learn how to shape the foundation for the braid,<br />
learn the correct spacing for the holes, <strong>and</strong> how to bevel <strong>and</strong> prepare the lace for braiding. Alternative<br />
applications for this unique braid <strong>and</strong> other appliqué braids will be discussed. Students will complete<br />
a wrist b<strong>and</strong> using the techniques learned. Kangaroo leather, foundation leather <strong>and</strong> lace bevelers will<br />
be supplied.<br />
Materials to Bring: Lacing fid, sewing awl, #10 stitch maker, bone folder, two 2-prong lacing needles,<br />
large edge beveler, white saddle soap or braiding soap, small scissors <strong>and</strong> scalpel.<br />

Course Description: Students will choose to carve <strong>and</strong> shape two pairs of elegant leather earrings<br />
<strong>and</strong> color them with iridescent acrylics, or carve <strong>and</strong> color a bangle leather bracelet. Bracelets (leather<br />
stitched over metal core) will be provided. The application of appropriate finishes for lasting durability is also<br />
discussed. Sterling silver or 14k gold ear wires will be provided for the earrings.<br />
Materials to Bring: Swivel knife, strop, sponge, basic stamping tools, maul or mallet, tracing stylus,<br />
poundo board or cutting mat, scalpel with a #11 blade, French edger, ball-style modeler, old washcloth<br />
or soft rag. If possible, bring inexpensive small brush assortment <strong>and</strong> jeweler’s pliers for opening<br />

Course Description: Under Darin’s careful instruction students will practice methods of making the<br />
cinch with special focus on traditional cord stringing/warping considerations of the cinch body. Darin<br />
will demonstrate specific steps which ensure the highest level of quality explaining how to recognize<br />
common difficulties <strong>and</strong> how to make improvements for the comfort <strong>and</strong> health of your Equine. Each<br />
student will be provided with materials for two basic cinches <strong>and</strong> one ornate Vaquero to assist in<br />
reinforcing memory of cord lay-up <strong>and</strong> tension. Completion of at least one usable cinch during class<br />
is anticipated. It is recommended that students take “Cordage Style: Cinch Pattern <strong>and</strong> Designs”<br />
workshop first since this Vaquero workshop focuses heavily on the skills of body str<strong>and</strong> techniques.<br />

lay out basic patterns. Further instruction involving basic pattern components (flowers, buds, leaves,<br />
stems, <strong>and</strong> fillers) will open up inexhaustible possibilities for pattern layout. Students will then practice<br />
these methods.<br />
