Darin uses a progressive approach to help students become familiar with specific design techniques.<br />
Under Darin’s patient instruction each student will practice the basic movements/methods of cinch<br />
detailing <strong>and</strong> needling-off, using a variety of fibers, to produce designs on two, pre-strung 25 str<strong>and</strong>,<br />
wall-hanging “samplers”. Discussion of fiber identification methods <strong>and</strong> examples demonstrating various<br />
applications of this distinctively western tradition will be presented. Keep in mind that the elegant results<br />
of cordage techniques can be employed as a form of filigree in an array of items such as boots, belts,<br />

live horse. This is a h<strong>and</strong>s-on approach with all students encouraged to participate. 3rd–Making minor<br />

horse’s back. This workshop will address reading the tree to determine how the ground seat needs to<br />
be installed to achieve the desired goals. A variety of ground seat patterns will be shown <strong>and</strong> compared.<br />
There’ll also be a discussion of the difference between a man’s <strong>and</strong> a woman’s seat <strong>and</strong> what can be<br />
done to make this seat gender specific. Two different methods of installing ground seats will be demonstrated.<br />

Darin learned the cinch making trade in high school over 25 years ago <strong>and</strong> gained practical<br />
application as a h<strong>and</strong> on his great uncle’s ranch in Wyoming. It was no looking back from there.<br />
He has been teaching the art <strong>and</strong> trade of quality cinch design to the general public for 20 years.<br />
Customers have remarked time <strong>and</strong> again that the attention to detail put in every one of his cinches<br />
is excellent, with improved comfort seen in horses <strong>and</strong> mules being more relaxed.<br />
Robert Beard – Master <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Bob owns Pro Series Tool Company in Farmington, New Mexico, where he specializes in designing<br />
<strong>and</strong> crafting custom leather tools. He is a world-renowned carver, instructor <strong>and</strong> tool maker <strong>and</strong> has<br />
been a leather artist for over forty years. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement<br />
in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 1987.<br />
Joe Boyles – Braider<br />
Joe began braiding in 1988 while in Australia. Since then, Joe has taught numerous students one-onone.<br />
He prefers to braid kangaroo lace but also enjoys making <strong>and</strong> braiding rawhide. Joe’s rawhide<br />
instructor was Mary Fields who is shown in the Bruce Grant books. Joe is also a member of the<br />
Australian Plaiters <strong>and</strong> Whipmakers Association. In Joe’s words, “I have been blessed by other<br />
leather <strong>and</strong> rawhide workers with instruction that I have to do my part in passing on the instruction.”<br />
Bob Brenner – Accomplished Saddle Maker<br />
Besides being a full-time saddle maker, Bob was a branch bank manager that gives him good experience<br />
in reading <strong>and</strong> analyzing profit <strong>and</strong> loss statements. He was also an account manager for a<br />
computer company that did all the data processing for area banks. Based on his wealth of knowledge<br />
gleaned from these experiences, he published a book on pricing saddles <strong>and</strong> other leather work. Bob<br />
owns Pike’s Peak Saddlery in Black Forest, CO.<br />
Don Butler – Master Saddle Maker<br />
An expert at layout <strong>and</strong> stamping floral patterns, Don’s work is worthy of the highest praise <strong>and</strong> frequently<br />
earns first place at contests throughout the nation. In 1959, Don started working with saddles<br />
<strong>and</strong> tack <strong>and</strong> his journeys led him to develop many of his own patterns. He’s always willing to share his<br />
knowledge with fellow leather workers. Don owns Custom Cowboy Shop in <strong>Sheridan</strong>, Wyoming. He<br />
was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2011.<br />
Nick Carter – Expert Braider<br />
Currently residing in Casper, Wyoming, Nick is a working man’s braider who has been making <strong>and</strong><br />
selling his braided goods for over 24 years. Always willing to share <strong>and</strong> learn techniques, Nick offers his<br />
services with great enthusiasm every chance he gets.<br />

Carl Chappell – Master Boot Maker<br />
Carl learned boot making from his father <strong>and</strong> began making boots in 1982. In 2001, his boot entry<br />
placed first in the World <strong>Leather</strong> Debut, <strong>and</strong> he repeated as winner of the Boots division in 2010. In<br />
2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 <strong>and</strong> 2009 he won the Masters Division at the Texas Boot & Saddle Roundup.<br />
Carl operates a boot making school, is a full-time boot maker <strong>and</strong> has published a book <strong>and</strong> video<br />
about making boots. His latest achievement is being the recipient of the AWA Will Rodgers Award for<br />
“Boot Maker of the Year 2011”.<br />
Kathy Flanagan – <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Kathy has been working with leather for four decades, beginning in 1970, in 4-H, learning from<br />
masters of the craft. In 2005, the International Federation of <strong>Leather</strong> Guilds awarded Kathy the<br />
“Best of Advanced” division <strong>and</strong> “People’s Choice” honors. Later, in 2009, the IFoLG awarded Kathy<br />
the “Pathway to Masters” award for her continuous efforts <strong>and</strong> willingness to teach in the field of<br />
leathercraft.<br />
Chan Geer – Master <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Chan began leather work as a young boy helping his dad repair saddles. He <strong>and</strong> his wife, Mary,<br />
live in <strong>Sheridan</strong> where he owns <strong>and</strong> operates Geer’s Custom <strong>Leather</strong>. Geer has written three books<br />
on <strong>Sheridan</strong> Style Carving, made <strong>and</strong> compiled pattern packs <strong>and</strong> is a contributing author in The<br />
<strong>Leather</strong> <strong>Crafters</strong> & <strong>Saddlers</strong> <strong>Journal</strong>. Chan has produced a line of project-based, how-to DVDs<br />
which have been very successful. He was awarded the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in<br />
<strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2005.<br />
Pete Gorrell – Master Saddle Maker<br />
Pete began working with leather in 1952 while working as a ranch h<strong>and</strong> in Colorado. He learned<br />
saddle making from Clarence Wilson, <strong>and</strong> afterwards studied human <strong>and</strong> horse anatomies to be able<br />
to build better saddles for both. He <strong>and</strong> his wife, Helen, reside in Gardner, CO, <strong>and</strong> Hawaii, where<br />
they diligently teach leathercraft <strong>and</strong> saddle making. Pete has also authored books on leathercraft<br />
<strong>and</strong> saddle making, <strong>and</strong> is a contributing author in The <strong>Leather</strong> <strong>Crafters</strong> & <strong>Saddlers</strong> <strong>Journal</strong>. Pete<br />
received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2007.<br />
Al Gould – Master Saddle Maker<br />
Al Gould is a custom saddle maker <strong>and</strong> leather artist, having made saddles since 1960. Horses <strong>and</strong><br />
cattle have been a large part of his life with experience in - <strong>and</strong> not limited to – high country packing<br />
mules <strong>and</strong> cow punching. Al is also a gold card member of Pro-Rodeo. Al has taught a variety of<br />
classes at numerous past shows <strong>and</strong> is the coordinator of Saddle Days. He was awarded the Al<br />
Stohlman Award for Achievement in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2009.<br />
Sheryl Katzke – Expert Braider<br />
Sheryl was first introduced to leathercraft while a Girl Scout <strong>and</strong> later began braiding leather, learning<br />
from masters of the craft in both kangaroo <strong>and</strong> rawhide, <strong>and</strong> becoming skilled in round braiding, inlay/<br />
overlay braids <strong>and</strong> fine edge braiding. Her work has won many blue ribbons <strong>and</strong> she enjoys making<br />
custom dog leads. She teaches leathercraft in her community <strong>and</strong> owns Katzke’s Custom <strong>Leather</strong> in<br />

at its seminars as well as for 4-H <strong>and</strong> in his own saddle shop. Bob is primarily self-taught <strong>and</strong><br />
is eager to share his hard-earned knowledge with others. Bob received the Al Stohlman Award for<br />

Tony Laier – Master <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Tony’s experience in the world of leather is extensive. For over 30 years, they have been immersed in<br />
the retail sales, research, design, marketing <strong>and</strong> instruction of leathercraft. Currently, Tony is Director<br />
of Research <strong>and</strong> Development for T<strong>and</strong>y <strong>Leather</strong> Factory Company <strong>and</strong> works together on this with<br />
Kay. He received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 1999.<br />
Jim Linnell – Master <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
An active leather craftsman for over 35 years, Jim has conducted hundreds of workshops <strong>and</strong> demonstrations<br />
on various leather working techniques in the U.S. <strong>and</strong> Europe, including workshops for<br />
4-H, Boy Scouts <strong>and</strong> other youth organizations. Jim received the Al Stohlman Award for Achievement<br />
in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2002.<br />
Rod & Denise Nikkel – Saddle Tree Makers<br />
Rod <strong>and</strong> his wife, Denise, have built over 2000 saddle trees for custom saddle makers since 1996. With Rod’s<br />
background as a working cowboy <strong>and</strong> Denise’s background as a vet, they started with a solid base of knowledge<br />
which has grown substantially over the past 15 years due to their ongoing curiosity about how saddles, trees<br />
<strong>and</strong> horses work together. They look at teaching as another way to contribute to the saddle making community.<br />
Bob Park – Professional Tooler & <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Bobby began tooling leather as a youngster in Arizona where he was greatly influenced by the cowboy<br />
lifestyle. Specializing in western floral tooling, Bobby has developed a unique look in the tradition<br />
of the western style. His products sell throughout the U.S. <strong>and</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> have won numerous<br />
awards at various shows <strong>and</strong> exhibitions. In 2011 he received the “Best of the Masters” award at<br />
the International Federation of <strong>Leather</strong> Guilds convention. Most recently, he received the “Bootstrap<br />
Award” at the 2012 Trappings of the American West exhibition for his contribution toward the advancement<br />
of the art. Bobby is a contributing author in The <strong>Leather</strong> <strong>Crafters</strong> & <strong>Saddlers</strong> <strong>Journal</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
has recently written a book titled Creating Floral Designs.<br />
Olive Parker – <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Olive has been creating with leather since 1977 <strong>and</strong> has received guidance from Alan Dewey, Paul<br />
Burnett, Bob Beard <strong>and</strong> others. Her contribution to functional leather art is a western woman’s perspective<br />
in a traditionally masculine arena. She enjoys using shimmering acrylic colors, sterling silver<br />
<strong>and</strong> gold <strong>and</strong> takes her inspiration from her Montana l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> natural surroundings.<br />

Jesse began making leather craft items while in the Air Force. He made his first saddle for his dad.<br />

taught saddlery at Spokane Falls Community College for 28 years. He now lives in Pritchett, CO, <strong>and</strong><br />
operates his own saddle making school, <strong>and</strong> is an accomplished chap maker. Jesse received the Al<br />
Stohlman Award for Achievement in <strong>Leather</strong>craft in 2001.<br />
Paul Zalesak– <strong>Leather</strong> Artist<br />
Paul began tooling leather in 1974 in El Paso under the tutelage of Jim Resley. In 2001, he started<br />
<strong>Leather</strong> Wranglers, Inc., <strong>and</strong> developed the SK-3. A full-time faculty member at the local community<br />
college, Paul also loves to teach basic swivel knife use. Paul is a member of the New Mexico Roadrunner<br />
<strong>Leather</strong> Artisans’ Guild, the International Internet <strong>Leather</strong>crafters guild, the Colorado Saddle<br />
