Students arrived a<br />
month earlier <strong>to</strong> <strong>Chemawa</strong>’s<br />
campus this<br />
year. 60 students<br />
applied <strong>to</strong> be part of<br />
a summer extended<br />
learning program,<br />
which focused on<br />
preparing <strong>the</strong> students<br />
<strong>to</strong> be leaders<br />
on campus.<br />
Students struggled<br />
initially with <strong>the</strong> intense<br />
schedule that had a<br />
large focus on physical activity.<br />
Each day started at<br />
6:00am with a run <strong>and</strong> students<br />
were kept busy with<br />
activities till late in <strong>the</strong> evening.<br />
“We continuously re-<br />
<strong>Chemawa</strong>’s challenge<br />
course is up <strong>and</strong> running.<br />
Over <strong>the</strong> summer staff<br />
spent a week training<br />
<strong>and</strong> preparing <strong>the</strong> ropes<br />
course for students arrival.<br />
The course consists of<br />
both high <strong>and</strong> low elements,<br />
ranging from 50<br />
feet off <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>to</strong><br />
inches. The challenge<br />
course will serve many<br />
purposes <strong>and</strong> provides<br />
adrenaline endued fun for<br />
students on campus.<br />

<strong>the</strong> climbing wall <strong>and</strong><br />
demonstrated leadership<br />
while assisting staff during<br />
freshman orientation.<br />

Students deemed <strong>Chemawa</strong><br />
a “Happy<br />
Home” <strong>and</strong> put all<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir hard work in<strong>to</strong><br />
action when <strong>the</strong> Freshman<br />
class arrived a<br />
week before <strong>the</strong> rest<br />
of <strong>the</strong> students for<br />
orientation.<br />
Men<strong>to</strong>rs spent time<br />
getting <strong>to</strong> know <strong>the</strong><br />
class of 2016, answering<br />
questions <strong>and</strong> providing<br />
support for those who<br />
were homesick. Men<strong>to</strong>r students<br />
<strong>to</strong>ok a lot of pride in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir hard work <strong>and</strong> growth.<br />

29. This year had <strong>the</strong> highest<br />
participant attendance<br />

<strong>Chemawa</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>School</strong> has<br />
been around for over 130<br />
years. With <strong>the</strong> first graduating<br />
class having fourteen<br />
boys <strong>and</strong> four girls this year<br />
<strong>the</strong> class of 2013, 70 students<br />
strive <strong>to</strong> receive <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
high school diploma.<br />

waiting list for female students.<br />
The administration at <strong>Chemawa</strong><br />
has three goals for <strong>the</strong><br />
students. 1) That students will<br />
have a voice. 2) That students<br />
will be self governed <strong>and</strong> 3)<br />

a n d t h e I P a d ' s a r e h e r e<br />
<strong>Chemawa</strong> this year were issued<br />
an IPad. Most classroom assignments<br />
<strong>and</strong> homework are<br />
assigned through <strong>the</strong> use of<br />
IPad’s. Technology is <strong>the</strong> future<br />
<strong>and</strong> having a well rounded education<br />
using technology only<br />
makes sense. Many students<br />
have been seen around campus<br />
using <strong>the</strong>ir IPads creatively <strong>to</strong>o,<br />
creating movie trailers <strong>and</strong><br />
documentary films.<br />

Athletes at <strong>Chemawa</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>School</strong> were<br />
invited <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> campus early <strong>to</strong> participate<br />
in <strong>the</strong> summer ES program in<br />
addition <strong>to</strong> starting <strong>the</strong>ir athletic training.<br />
For many years <strong>Chemawa</strong> has been at a<br />
disadvantage <strong>to</strong> competing schools due<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>Chemawa</strong> students do not have an<br />
opportunity <strong>to</strong> start practicing <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r as<br />
a team until<br />

Football, volleyball <strong>and</strong> cross country were<br />
offered for students in <strong>the</strong> fall season.<br />
The football team showed great improvement<br />
ending <strong>the</strong> season with what could<br />
be described as a record season of wins.<br />
Cross country <strong>and</strong> volleyball all worked<br />
hard, showed dedication <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir team<br />
<strong>and</strong> commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sport.<br />
H o m e c o m i n g 2 0 1 2<br />
Homecoming is a long st<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
high school tradition <strong>and</strong> at<br />
<strong>Chemawa</strong> things are no different.<br />
Homecoming week at<br />
<strong>Chemawa</strong> started off with spirit<br />
week. Students dressed up for<br />
“twin day” <strong>and</strong> “super hero”<br />
day. Friday <strong>the</strong> festivities<br />
kicked off with an all school<br />
assembly. C<strong>and</strong>y was thrown,<br />
pies were <strong>to</strong>ssed in teachers<br />
faces, games <strong>and</strong> dance competition<br />
<strong>to</strong>ok place. Even a<br />
mosh pit was present momentarily.<br />
The fun filled week was<br />
highlighted with a car smash.<br />
What better way <strong>to</strong> celebrate<br />
than smashing up an old car<br />
<strong>and</strong> no homecoming would be<br />
complete without a bonfire.<br />
Friday nights homecoming football<br />
game proved successful as<br />
<strong>the</strong> braves beat <strong>the</strong>ir opponent<br />
with a final score of 48-12. T.<br />
