PLANTS OF ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - AN INTRODUCTION by W K Plant The Plants of St Louis have occupied a place in the hxstory of that city and a Mr Alfred Plant who lived XI Webster Grove, Missouri at the end of the last century claimed to have traced his ancentry back some three hundred years to the County Palatine of Chester England. Around 1600 there were two brothers, Samuel and John Plant. From the latter of these two brothers the followzng line was descended: John: Thomas: George: Samuel (who married Ann Halgh and lived xn Macclesfxeld) and Samuel who moved to Boston, Massachusetts between 1790 and 1800 and married there, Mary D Polgnaud, a Boston lady of Huguenot ancestry. This Samuel Plant was sent to America by his uncle: a Mr HaSgh, who was a manufacturer of woollen cloths at Leeds, to sell his goods. An American headquarters was set up at Boston from where he travelled extensively selling goods Imported from the UK. Some years later he xmported from England, plans for cotton machinery and built in 1809, the first cotton factory III Worcester County, Massachusetts, the factory being located at Clinton. Samuel was the father of sxx sons and sxx daughters, the names of the sons being, George, Frederick Willlam, Samuel, Alfred, William M and Henry. It is believed that they all moved to St Louls and became actxve In the development of that cz~ty through the 19th century. It is known that Alfred lived in Webster Grove, Missour in 1897 but nothing is known of the other members of the family or their descendents.
