Cable Systems
• Highlead
Uses 2 operating lines; does not use a skyline or carriage
• Skyline
Standing (single span or multispan)
The skyline length is fixed and the skyline does not raise or
lower during the yarding cycle; a slackpulling carriage is
needed
Live
The skyline is raised and lowered with each turn of logs;
a non-slackpulling carriage is used
Running
Two lines support the load and these lines move
in and out with the carriage; a slackpulling carriage
is typically used; interlock yarding drums are
typically used

Skyline Carriages
SlackPulling Non-Slackpulling
Manual Mechanical Choker Grapple
Pulled by Carriage Pulled by Yarder

Yarder and Carriage Compatibility Factors
• Proper number of yarding drums to operate carriage
• Line size matches with carriage sheave diameters
• Carriage weight is appropriate for cable system
Approximately:
Large towers: 22,000 000 – 66,000 000 lbs lbs.
Mobile yarders: 1,000 – 4,000 lbs.
Small towers: 300 – 1500 lbs

Terminology: Skyline Logging Crew Positions
• Side Rod or supervisor of the logging
operation p
• Hooktender is the person responsible
for cable road changes and helps with the
supervision p
• Rigging Slinger is the person that
supervises the choker setting operation --selects
logs g to be choked and sends radio
signals to yarder operator
• Choker Setters set the cables (or
chokers) ) on the logs g
• Chaser unhooks the logs at the roadside
• Yarder Operator runs the yarder
• Loader Operator runs the loader
