In order to preserve physical evidence in its original state, the crime scene must 

be protected and preserved as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of the first 

officer arriving on the scene of a crime to take steps to preserve and protect the 

area to the greatest extent possible. 

All criminal investigations are concerned with the dual aspects that create the possiblility 

of physical evidence: 

1. The individuals (perpetrator and victim) involved. 

2. The items employed or touched during the commission of the crime. 

By its very nature, a crime scene cannot be left untouched by the participants. Physical 

evidence, in some form, is left behind. The investigators involved should utilize a balanced 

approach to each inquiry —concerning the collection of the pertinent physical information 

and formulating connections between that information and the individuals involved in the 

crime. 

The enormous potential of physical evidence must be realized by understanding: 

a. What physical evidence is. 

b. How to collect and preserve it. 

c. How to determine the pertinent information it offers. 

d. How to interpret that information.

in THe inVeSTigATiOn. 

The finished sketch gives a precise and permanent record of the evidence 

found at the scene. A photograph is a two-dimensional view of the scene and 

does not provide accurate information concerning distances between objects 

that are present at the scene. Photos cannot be clearly understood unless 

the measured distances between these points are known. A finished drawing 

or rough sketch of the scene is the most effective way of showing actual 

measurements and of identifying important items of evidence at the location 

of the scene. Sketches are separated into three classes: 

1. ROUGH SKETCH: The rough sketch is prepared by the investigator at the 

scene—but not until all photography has been completed and before any 

evidence has been collected. The sketch does not have to be drawn to scale 

but should include exact measurements of the surroundings and the location 

of evidence in relation to the victim’s location or other important evidence. 

2. FINISHED SKETCH: The finished sketch is a duplicate of the rough sketch 

prepared to scale by using layout templates and exact distances. When 

the finished sketch is completed, it should immediately be duplicated and 

forwarded to the proper authorities for safekeeping until the case is resolved. 

3. SCALE DRAWING: A scale drawing is used primarily for courtroom 

presentation. It may be drawn to any scale chosen. The drawing should 

include all measurements of the rooms, furniture, walls, etc., but not the 

location of the evidence that has been recovered. When the drawing has 

been completed, a clear plastic overlay can be attached showing the location 

of the evidence in the room where it was found.

Evidence Sealing & Identification 

In 1977, SIRCHIE ® introduced SIRCHMARK Evidence 

Tape as the best security tape available… and it quickly 

became the most widely used integrity system by law 

enforcement agencies everywhere. It’s still the best! 

The SIRCHMARK tape substrate used is a mere 1.5 mil 

(.0015") thick. Its high-tack adhesive produces a superior 

seal on most surfaces making it virtually impossible to 

remove without destroying the tape. Once its seal has 

been put into place, SIRCHMARK provides assurance 

that the integrity of the crime scene evidence has been 

preserved until the moment it is presented in court. 

Attempts to remove the tape will cause its substrate to 

break and peel off in irregular strips. The red or blue 

tint and black overprint will dissolve and smear when 

solvents like alcohol and acetone are applied—positive 

proof of tampering.

SircHmArK eViDence TAPe 

SIRCHMARK evidence tape is made with a matte acetate base featuring a top 

surface that may be written on with pencil or pen. It is coated with a permanent, 

quick-setting acrylic adhesive that defies removal from most surfaces. To 

increase the tape’s ability to tear, it is perforated with 3/16” slits at 1/4” 

intervals. Dual-serrated tape edges add redundancy to the integrity. The tape’s 

top surface is printed in translucent red or blue ink, then overprinted with an 

opaque black identifier or an agency’s custom imprint. The roll is 1 1/2” wide, 

0.001” thick, on a 3” core and is backed with 50 lb. stock Kraft liner.

Sirchmark E-Z Peel Evidence Tape features a special pre-scored backing 

so it’s easy to remove the first time. Sirchmark tape is manufactured on 

a matte acetate base that is coated with a permanent, quick-setting acrylic 

adhesive that defies removal from most surfaces. Any attempts to tamper 

with the tape will cause the substrate to break and peel off in irregular strips. 

The tape will dissolve and smear when solvents like acetone are applied — 

positive proof of tampering. 

Pair this tape with our E-Z Tape Dispenser. Our tape dispenser is made of 

tough, molded ABS plastic and features a handy built-in belt clip for your 

convenience. Simply tear off the amount of tape you need, remove half of the

SIRCHIE ® ’s SIRCH-VUE Tamper Indicator Tape is made of 1.25 mil thick 

polyester and is red with SIRCH-VUE printed in black ink. The tape is prewound 

on a three-inch core and is packaged in 180-ft. long rolls. 

SIRCH-VUE tape can be easily applied to an evidence bag or box using 

standard hand-dispensing guns and is virtually impossible to remove without

physical evidence possesses 

and how to best make full 

use of it once it’s collected. 

In every crime scene, it is important 

for the investigator to realize that 

while the obvious physical evidence 

must receive full attention, it often 

will be absent. Microparticle evidence 

is, however, present in most cases. 

A knife, gun, signature or burglar 

tool are immediately recognized 

as constituting physical evidence. 

Less often is it considered that dust, 

microscopic fragments of all types, 

bacteria, even an odor, equally may 

be physical evidence, and quite often 

the most important of all. 

Well established is that the most 

useful types of physical evidence 

are generally microscopic in 

dimensions—not noticeable to the 

naked eye, and therefore most likely 

to be overlooked by both the criminal 

and the investigator. For this reason, 

the microscopic evidence persists at 

the crime scene long after all visible 

and obvious evidence is removed.

plastic lid which can then be used directly in the optical microscope. Enclose

perpetrator—and they’re all too often overlooked. Repulpable evidence tape

Apply the tape to those areas of suspicion, remove and immerse in water or 

methanol (check with the crime lab—often, it requests the tape itself). The hair 

or fiber evidence separates from the adhesive backer and is then recovered

cOmBuSTiBLe gAS DeTecTOr 

The CGD8800A is a general purpose combustible hydrocarbons detector 

that may be used for detecting most combustible gas or vapors at suspected 

arson and fire scenes. This lightweight and fully portable instrument will 

locate quickly minute concentrations of combustible hydrocarbons and the 

presence of hazardous vapors at suspect arson scenes to levels as low as 

five PPM (parts per million). An invaluable tool for many unforeseeable and 

unexpected situations and no investigative department is fully equipped 

without one. The CGD8800A Combustible Gas Detector indicates the 

strength of the vapor source on an LED-based bar graph display. It emits a 

clicking signal (similar to a Geiger counter), whose frequency increases as 

the concentration of the combustible gas increases. The sensing head is 

located at the end of a 15” gooseneck-style extension arm that easily folds 

into the case for efficient storage and transport. The unit includes a carrying 

case, rechargeable batteries, a recharger, and 5 each SIRCHIE ® Reference 

Standard Pads for field verification of the CGD8800A.

The depth of charring of wood is one indicator as to how long the substance 

burned, how intense the fire was and may indicate the possibility that 

accelerants were used when charring is exceptionally deep in isolated areas. 

The gauge permits rapid, accurate measurement throughout the fire scene 

and often eliminates having to cut out timbers unnecessarily. It is calibrated in 

1/32” increments and measures up to 1” of char depth. It is a necessary aid to

LASer TrAjecTOry FinDer KiT 

Using a powerful, yet compact Class IIIa laser, this Laser Trajectory Finder 

Kit allows the investigator to visualize a bullet’s trajectory. The Ballistic Laser 

Pointer may be attached to a Penetration Rod inserted into a bullet hole, or 

it may be mounted on a tripod and directed into the bullet hole along the 

bullet’s actual path. The LTF101 Ballistic Angle Finder is used to determine 

the angle of trajectory. It can be hand held or mounted on a tripod using the 

heavy gauge steel Universal Tripod Mount via its built-in magnetic base. 

The kit includes Centering Cones for use on either the Penetration or Multi- 

Colored Photographic Rods to permit a secure fit when rods are inserted into 

various sized entry and exit bullet holes. A reusable roll of Colored Trajectory 

String is included when longer distances are involved.

To use the laser to project a beam through a bullet hole, mount the laser 

onto the Universal Tripod Mount using one of the rod connectors. Attach the 

tripod mount onto a tripod using the predrilled 1/4-20 mounting hole. Adjust 

the tripod’s height and lateral adjustments until the laser beam penetrates 

through the bullet hole.
