Korda Carpfest returns!
Korda Carpfest is back and better
than ever. The action-packed twoday
event that proved so popular
when first run in 2005 at Thorpe
Lea is now coming to a lake near
you.
A Korda spokesman told Carp-
Talk: “Carpfest is hitting the road
to 10 venues around the country
between now and September.
The lakes at each venue will be
hosting fishing demonstrations all
day long. You will be able to stand
with Darrell Peck, Ali Hamidi or
Tom Dove as they try to catch
carp and pick their brains on
anything you wish. Who knows,
you might even be able to play a
carp on their rods if the carp gods
are smiling that day!
“If you want a rundown on
what you can expect from
Carpfest then you can check out
the Carpfest video clips on the
Korda website. Just as before,
you’ll find a selection of Team
Korda anglers at each event
and this time we’re bringing
our friends from Daiwa, Trakker,
Delkim and Mainline Bait with us
to join the fun. Perhaps most
importantly, entry to all Carpfest
events is completely free of
charge.”
Micron M+ Series Alarms
There are two new alarms in
the Micron M+ range, these
being the M+ and the slightly
more advanced MX+. Both
alarms benefit from technology
employed in Fox’s successful
N Series of alarms. This means
that even an angler operating
on the tightest of budgets can
afford a bite alarm that utilizes
top-end features and offers
excellent value for money.
Both models share the
classic Micron styling and have
been manufactured to the
highest of standards and have
been subjected to stringent
testing procedures including
rigorous water testing. Both the
M+ and MX+ are powered by
two AAA batteries and thanks
to circuitry technology inside
the alarms offer an extremely
long battery life. They both
also incorporate Fox’s D-Tec
Sensing System, which makes
them very hardwearing. You will
also find easy-to-use toggle
on/off switches on both of the
models, plus raised 5mm LEDs
(red on M+, blue on MX+),
rotary dials and two sockets
(power out and extension)
so they can be used with
illuminated indicators and/
or external receiver systems
such as Fox’s new TXR Micro
Transmitter. Further shared
features include brass thread
with rubber O rings for secure
connection to buzzer bars and
banksticks plus rubber inlays
on the inside of the ears to
prevent rod slippage and they
come with hardcases.
The M+ is the cheaper
model of the two at just £25.99,
which is due to the
fact that it only has
adjustable volume
and utilizes a Piezo
speaker, not a
cone speaker.
The Mx+ at £39.99 is
more advanced, featuring not
only volume control but also
adjustable tone. In addition
the MX+ also features a cone
speaker that omits a very crisp
sound to let you know when
you’ve got a bite!
The MX+ also features a two
stage sensitivity setting to allow
you to pick a sensitivity setting
that best suits your angling
situation.
ESP Digital Camo Waterproof Hoody
This is an item of waterproof
clothing which is a little bit
different to the norm and has
received plenty of positive
comments already. ESP is the
first company to use the new
digital camo pattern, as used
by the US army, on dedicated
angling clothing.
Incorporating three colours
(two greens and a brown) the
pattern has been designed
to complement European
foliage. It is a far more effective
camouflage than standard
patterns because it mimics the
dappled textures and rough
boundaries found in natural
settings. This is caused by how
the human eye interacts with
pixelated images.
The ESP digital camo pattern
works incredibly well in practice
and this waterproof hoody is
the forerunner to a wider range
of clothing using this pattern.
The pullover hoody is quilted
and very warm without being
heavy and cumbersome. It
incorporates a well fitted,
peaked hood with adjustable
drawstrings, a short zip with
Velcro waterproof baffle and a
large fully zipped chest pocket.
Other features are cosy, fleece
lined hand warmer pockets and
elasticated cuffs.
Most angling clothing
has a standard 5000ml
waterproof/3000ml breathability
rating. So you’ll be
pleasantly surprised to
know that this new digital
camo hoody has a
waterproof rating
of 25,000ml and
a breathability
rating of
10,000ml.
That’s Gore-
Tex standard
and far
higher
than the
fabric used
on most
top-end
bivvies,
let along
clothing!
Available
in size S, M,
L, XL and XXL, you’ll be even
more pleasantly surprised to
know that such a high quality
garment is available at the
introductory RRP of just £59.95,
considerably less than you
were probably expecting!

Fosters syndicate vacancies
Vacancies are currently available on two of Fosters of Birmingham’s syndicate lakes. Penns Hall
is a good action water with a big head of twenties to just under 30lb. The lake is around six acres
and is set in very pleasant surroundings. There is no close season on this water and the syndicate
start date was 1st April 2011.
The Farm is a small water of approximately two acres and is located in the Staffordshire
countryside. It is classed as a hard water but contains bigger carp. The current lake record is a
38lb 10oz mirror. There are four other thirties with back-up twenties and doubles. It is more for the
experienced angler who is willing to put the sessions in for a result.
Anyone interested should contact Baz Griffiths on 07786 450120 or the shop on 01213 443333.

Unknown Colne Valley forty!
each week we delve into the archives and relive a memorable catch
from the past. this week we take a look at an unknown 46-pounder
caught from the Colne Valley by Simon hartop during may 2009.
Captor on Cloud Nine
Simon Hartop enjoyed a rare
moment last weekend when he
netted this unknown 46lb 2oz
mirror from an overlooked lake
in the Colne Valley.
Simon talked to Carp-
Talk’s Chris Ball about the
capture: “I caught this mirror
after an intermittent three-year
campaign at the lake that
has just five
carp swimming
around it. I was
convinced that
this fish was
in the upper
30lb range
with a chance
of it tipping
over 40lb, so I
considered it
well worth the
effort involved.
“I baited
up four spots over
a fortnight that unfortunately
didn’t get touched; very typical
here as the fish are hard to pin
down. I decided on a whim to
go anyway and I pitched up in
a load of brambles in front of a
Norfolk reed bed. Out in front
was a small patch I’d baited the
day before. I saw three of the
fish but not the big one in the
area but seeing the fish was still
46LB
a good sign.
“Just into darkness there was
a tremendous liner where the
rod literally took off the rest and
slammed through the rushes. As
I readied myself it stopped so I
put the rod back on the rest, got
into the bag and drifted off.
“Sometime later I awoke to
the sound of my clutch and hit
into a fish. It soon weeded me
but steady pressure snapped
the lead off, which was tied on
with 3lb line. It came free and
the fish came straight towards
me. I wasn’t even sure it was
a carp until it swirled heavily in
front. After this it fought hard for
what seemed like an age, but
I remained calm and took my
time until it was netted. As it was
pitch dark I couldn’t tell which
one it was. I tried to lift the net
arms but it was immoveable!
Thinking something was wrong
I checked the net to see if it was
snagged or tangled, but all was
well.
“I broke the net arms down
and rolled them to the fish and

heaved it out. I knew then
that I had the fish I wanted
and that it was heavy.
However, I was just excited
to have it on the bank. I rang
Paul from Angling Intelligence
as I am a consultant for
them. Paul arrived and we
weighed the fish. When he
read off 46lb 2oz I just started
jumping up and down like a
loony and laughing.
“Whilst we sat there it
started to dawn on me what
I’d caught and I must take
this opportunity to thank
everyone who has contacted
me or left messages on
forums. A 100% unknown
Colne Valley forty – truly I’m
on Cloud Nine.”
Simon used a washed-out
Mainline boilie to tempt his
prize, offering the hookbait
on a rig incorporating ESP
leadcore, a size 4 ESP Raptor
hook attached to 25lb Snake-
Bite and an Atomic Tackle
Sandy lead. He completed
his set-up with a 9ft Dymag
stalker rod and a Cardinal 57
reel loaded with 15lb GR60.
THE PREDATION ACTION GROUP
WHO, WHAT AND WHY?
Mike Heylin
Mike has fi shed for
60 years and works
full time in angling
and fi sheries. He is
fi shery manager at
Boxmoor and District
Angling Society, runs
an angling project
for disadvantaged
children, and
is Secretary of
the Fish Welfare
Group, Director
of the Dacorum
Angling Project
and Secretary of
Colne Valley Anglers
Consultative. He
sits on the Wildlife
Group, the offi cial
committee looking
into predation on
fi sheries.
he PAG committee has been formed to research
and report on the eff ects of predation on fi sheries
Tand
angling in Great Britain. Th e balance of nature
is being destroyed and angling is under threat. Th e spread of
imported signal crayfi sh means that all fi sh’s food sources are
being depleted and their spawn preyed upon in both rivers and
lakes. Th e seas are being stripped of fi sh, a phenomenon which
has resulted in cormorants being driven
inland for their prey. Th e eff ect of cormorant
predation on inland fi sheries is well
documented, with John Wilson rationalising
that they account for up to 58,000,000
irreplaceable small fi sh per annum.
Against this background of increasing
small fi sh predation, in the early-’70s a
programme was put in place to rear otters in
captivity and reintroduce them to the wild.
Th e EA Otter Survey of 2010 reveals that
the spread of otters has been far-reaching
and they are now present in most areas of
the country. Because of the impact of signal
crayfi sh and cormorants destroying the small
fi sh food chain, otters have had to learn to
look elsewhere for their normal prey. As a
result, their impact on specimen fi sh has been alarming. Th ey
have all but totally wiped out the specimen barbel population,
and have been responsible for serious damage to, and the
destruction of, an increasing number of carp fi sheries. Fishery
owners, controllers and fi sh farmers are in a diffi cult position
when it comes to protecting their interests and livelihoods
because otters and cormorants are protected. Th e authorities
are in denial over the predation issue. Notwithstanding the fact
Martin Bowler
Martin is a
professional angler
who writes for
Angling Times and
many European
magazines. In
addition to these
regular columns he
has been involved
with angling fi lms for
the last seven years,
including ‘Catching
The Impossible’,
which has been
shown on Channel
4 and Discovery.
Martin has his own
production company,
has held two British
records, and has
been described by
Peter Drennan as
‘…the best angler I
have ever known!’
Ruth Lockwood
Ruth is the owner
of Yateley Angling
Centre. Much of
her time is spent
campaigning against
the illegal trade
in carp through
ECHO. She is a
tireless, committed
worker, ECHO vicechairman,
secretary
of the PAG, and an
extremely effective
and infl uential
angling politician.
Ruth’s greatest joy is
music, and she can
often be found “on
the fi ddle” raising
funds for Macmillan
Cancer Support
through Stoney and
Friends.
John Slader
John works
part-time for the
Salmon & Trout
Association which
recently announced
a working
collaboration with
the Game & Wildlife
Conservation Trust
and has taken an
offi ce at its HQ
in Fordingbridge.
John is an all
round angler and
an active qualifi ed
angling coach (both
game and coarse)
and as such likes
to think that he
does have an
understanding
of the threats to
angling. He is
also chairman of the
Fish Welfare Group.
Who is in the Predation Action Group?
Danny Fairbrass
Danny is head of
the Essex-based
Korda Developments
company and a
successful carp
angler, writer, fi lm
maker and maker of
TV programmes. The
Korda Underwater
DVDs presented
by Danny are
considered ‘must
see’ material by
most carp anglers.
He is a generous
sponsor of carp
and angling politics
and has supported
the concept of the
Predation Action
Group since it was
fi rst proposed.
that we spend £25,000,000 per annum on licences, anglers are
looked on as the poor relations compared to such bodies
as the RSPB, English Nature, and so on.
Th e Angling Trust is there to look aft er anglers’
interests but they are underfunded and have their
hands full. Th e PAG has been formed to research
the predation issue and put together a convincing
case for some measure of
control of predators. In the fi rst
instance the PAG’s brief is to report
their fi ndings to the Angling Trust.
If that doesn’t have the desired eff ect
then it may become necessary to lobby
the government direct, a very expensive
procedure. All the committee’s work on
behalf of the PAG is voluntary and no one
claims expenses, but some areas of research
and reporting will cost money. We need
a stand to extend the lobby to shows, and
if we do have to make a direct approach
to the government then the estimated
cost is £50,000. Th at is why the PAG
needs funds: not to pay anyone for their
voluntary eff orts, but to be prepared to
move the battle onto another level, if necessary.
If you think you can help then send your money to Pip
Dean, Th e PAG, Regent House, 101, Broadfi eld Road,
Sheffi eld, South Yorkshire S8 0XH. Cheques to be made
payable to ‘Predation Action Group’. Further details about
the PAG and predation will shortly be available through our
website: PredationActionGroup.uk.org
Fox FX 55 litre rucksack
I had a great day down at the
Fox International empire a few
months back looking at the new
products for the coming year.
There are lots of fabulous items
coming through the ranks,
but the one that really caught
my eye was the FX 55 litre
rucksack.
Although I use a barrow
to transport bits of gear, I still
prefer to carry a lot of weight
on my back. The FX rucksack
looked a perfect replacement
for my old Hutchy which was
massively worn out. At first
glance I thought it wasn’t going
to be big enough to take the
items I normally carry for an
overnighter, but I was wrong.
It’s like a Tardis!
Fully loaded I’m getting
the following in it: a couple of
tackle pouches, my food, a
medium sized camera bag,
my stove, kettle and two
pans, scales, tripod, selection
of pop-up pots, binoculars,
toiletries, sacks, gas and water
bottles, first aid kit, PVA sticks,
waterproofs, catapults, liquid
additives, reading material as
well as a large pillow.
Made from hard-wearing
Cordura fabric with heavy duty
zips, I’m massively impressed
with this product. I think a large
part of the reason for this is
because of how well it sits on
the back. It’s so comfortable
to carry compared to my old
rucka; mainly down to the
fully adjustable 3D breathable
harness.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Five Days in France captures the action, the atmosphere and
the emotion that is experienced when fishing for very big carp.
It shows French carp fishing at its best as two of the UK’s top
anglers Lee Jackson and Frank Warwick visit world-recordbreaking
venue The Graviers. With just five days to get to know
the water and produce results the two anglers succeed in
spectacular fashion.
The film includes footage of some of the biggest carp ever
caught on camera and is full of useful techniques and tips on
how to approach many of the waters found in France. You can’t
help but be enthralled by the spectacular footage captured on
film for Five Days in France as the gripping hunt for huge carp
takes place.
Five Days in France is available
from www.carptalk-shop.co.uk
It features five external
pockets, a moulded EVA
base, as well as a simple
way of accessing the main
compartment – either from the
top or zip out front. A nice touch
is the zip harness flap, making
it suitable for use on a barrow
or taking it through the airport.
All in all, I think this is a
first rate product and one I’m
unable to fault in any way.
The RRP is £84.99 and
Telling Tales
I didn’t even know the lads at
Korda were producing a book
until their yearbook titled Telling
Tales dropped onto my desk
a month or so ago. I wasn’t
sure what to expect as it’s fair
to say that a lot of the writing
from Team Korda is aimed at
newcomer anglers with lots of
‘how to’ included. However, a
quick flick through soon had
me reading on.
It does contain some
instructional material, as well
as plenty of plugs, but I’ve got
to say none of it really detracts
from the overall production.
There’s some great chapters,
all about the carp fishing
experiences of the famous
Korda team.
Boss man Danny
Fairbrass recalls his fishing
on Wellington Country Park,
big carp expert Darrell Peck
features with his capture of
the Norfolk Charity Lakes
biggie, whilst Richard
Stewart is on Kingsmead
One catching a forty.
There’s much, much more,
including work from home and
abroad from Adam Penning,
Ali Hamidi, James Armstrong,
Damian Clarke, including
a cameo appearance from
long-time carper Clive Gibbins
who caught a monstrous
80-pounder from France.
Some of the photographs in
this book are stunning and very
inspiring. Just flicking through
it makes you want to go carp
fishing as it’s beautifully put
together and very suitable
for all levels of ability. It’s
competitively priced at £25 and
Taken from Carp-Talk issue 763- Dated 23rd May 2009
The small things
The small things
there’s a fine line between success and failure
in carp fishing, and with so many variables
in the equation it’s easy to make mistakes or
overlook small but crucial factors that can
really make the difference.
Regardless of
the method,
accuracy is
crucial

There can’t be many carp
swimming that haven’t had
a taste of Scopex Squid!
Spodding is a way of
life on some waters
I’m a perfectionist and I can’t
settle until I know I’ve done
everything I possibly can to
stack the odds in my favour.
This includes paying particular
attention to the small things;
the fine detail and those small
but significant tweaks that can
make the difference between
catching or enduring another
disappointing blank.
I’m no bait buff, but I know
by fishing with Nashbait I’m
using the best. I first started
using Nash products in 2002
and I haven’t looked back.
Since then I’ve been fortunate
enough to have had a good
number of notable catches
using Nashbait boilies and as a
result my confidence is always
sky high. Another factor to take
Diffusion – reliable and
super stealthy
Mark Watson
First visit to a new water and I’m
already focusing on the detail
into consideration is that there
must be very few carp around
that haven’t seen a Nashbait
boilie of some description. I
know some of the waters I’ve
fished in recent years have
seen large amounts of the stuff,
so going in with anything else
just doesn’t make sense to me.
The sharp end
We all have our favorite
hooks. I’m no exception and
tend to stick to just a couple
of patterns, rarely trying any
new ones. Once I’ve gained
confidence in a pattern I see no
reason to change, especially
when I’m fishing waters
where takes are not everyday
occurrences. Having said that,
on the recommendation of
trusted friends, I have been

Tackling midwater
playing around with a couple
of new hook patterns from the
Nash TT range over the last
year or so.
As soon as I got my first
packet of Fang Twisters I knew
it was a winner. The square-ish
shape of the bend along with
the needle-sharp point suits my
simple line-aligner rigs to a tee.
Although the palm test in no
way resembles what happens
in a carp’s mouth, I do believe
that a rig that turns well on
the palm will hook carp more
effectively than one that won’t.
While the Twisters make the
perfect choice for my bottom
and balanced baits, I’ve come
Weed – a problem or an asset?
to like the Gapers for my popup
rigs. The extra wide gape
and razor sharp point seems to
want to reach out and grab the
carp. Despite the sticky sharp
but durable reputation of the
Nash hooks, it goes without
saying you should check the
point of any hook on every cast.
It’s attention to detail like this
that can make all the difference.
hooklinks
The hooklink is something that
I really do like to keep simple in
all but the trickiest of situations;
a simple length of either Bullet
mono or 20lb Ultrasilk suffices.
I now steer away from the
many coated braids because
it seems to be what everyone
and his dog uses nowadays.
Offering a presentation that is
different to the norm is another
‘small thing’ that can make a
difference. When the carp have
made a couple of visits to the
bank and are getting a bit wary,
I employ the Triggalink. The way
this unique product stretches
when tensioned really gives the
carp an unfathomable mouthful,
Simple supple Twister rig –
Triggalink also gives me an edge
The awesome Gaper kind of
reaches out to grab those carp!

something they are not used to
coping with. It’s an edge that
has earned me a few bonus
carp when I’m sure standard
rigs would have failed or not
given me a good enough hook
hold.
lead attachment
Unnecessarily complex lead
set-ups are something I often
see in magazines, but I use
just two arrangements for
about 95% of my fishing. My
favorite is a simple running rig
which I use wherever I can. The
Diffusion Camo components
are the only ones I use because
they are strong, reliable and
virtually invisible in water. If you
are still skeptical about this,
try it for yourself. In weed or
against any lake bed colour, the
rig components blend in to fool
the carp. I have to be honest
and say that I was unsure
whether or not the pin that locks
the lead in place would stand
up to a big chuck, but I needn’t
have worried. Last winter I was
chucking 3oz leads over 100m
with no breakages at all.
Sometimes the Weed Safe Clip is
the only option
Running leads are fine
when fished on a relatively
clean bottom, but when weed
is an issue, which seems to
be everywhere nowadays, the
only logical choice for me is the
Nash Weed Safety Bolt Bead.
Until these came along I wasn’t
100% happy with any I’d tried.
The tail rubbers on some are
way too tight to ever lose the
lead and need doctoring in
some way to ensure the lead
is discharged. In my opinion, if
an item of tackle needs altering
in any way to do what it’s
supposed to then that item is
no good. The Weed Safety Clip
along with its soft tail rubber
does exactly what a lead clip
Ian Poole
should, and being part of the
Diffusion Camo range it is also
near invisible to the carp.
hitting the spot
That’s the small bits of tackle
covered, but there are a few
other habits I have on the bank
that are good to get into. As I’ve
said, I just can’t settle unless
I know I’ve done everything
I possibly can to swing the
odds in my favour. Having
my baits bang on the spots is
something I just have to do.
Making do with a miscast is not
acceptable, so I always have at
least a dozen stringers or sticks
made up ready and I’ll make
more if necessary. The water
I’m currently fishing seems very
‘spotty’, so near enough is not
good enough. After a couple
My Diffusion running set-up just
melts into the lake bed

Tackling midwater
of miscasts it’s easy to think
the nearest will do, but it won’t
for me. Most of my big carp
captures have come from the
pursuit of the perfect bump
down!
The same level of attention is
applied when I’m in action with
the spod rod. The last thing I
want is for spodfuls of bait to be
scattered around the area, so
any cast that is going off course
is stopped mid-flight and
retrieved. I thought I was okay
at spodding until I fished Elstow
1. Spodding is a way of life on
there and some of the other
members could rock the marker
float every time at 90 metres.
Practice makes perfect and
after a while I was accurately
hitting the spots in the same
way.
When it comes together
A perfect example of getting
all the small things right
and reaping the rewards
was a session I had on a
Cambridgeshire syndicate last
year. I often spend a lot of time
searching out the spots that
I fish. Sometimes during the
warmer months these could
be shallow margin spots or
areas the carp like to visit, but
later in the season when the
weather starts cooling off, I like
to search the deeper areas
of a lake for hard clear spots
because experience has shown
these to be a good place
to bag an autumn whacker.
Regardless of the time of year,
however, nothing is written
in stone so I always keep an
open mind. On this particular
occasion I’d found a small
hard, clay patch in around
A worthwhile
reward for taking
care of the small
things
14ft of water in a gully, which
ran for quite a way, a few rod
lengths off an island. The wind
and undertow were causing a
few problems with having the
marker rod in situ, so after the
fishing rod was clipped up at
the right distance, the marker
was removed from the swim.
The bait was an 18mm
Scopex Squid corkball popup
with a three-bait stringer
attached. It took about a
dozen casts to get a satisfying
bump down – with the hook
sharpness being tested before
each cast and a fresh stringer
attached every time.
STACKS MORE GREAT
FEATURES IN CARP-TALK
EVERY SINGLE WEEK!

My attention to detail
paid off in the early hours
when the bobbin rose and
pulled the line from the
clip. I was out on the rod
in a flash, but the fish had
already found sanctuary
in thick weed. With steady
pressure the fish, complete
with half a ton of weed
was slowly brought to the
bank and the whole lot
was bundled into the net.
Despite having caught my
fair share of big mirrors over
the years, my personalbest
common at the time
stood at 28lb. This water
holds several that are quite
a bit bigger than that so
when I saw a sizeable fish
in my head torch beam as
I peeled back the weed,
I was sure my first 30lb
common was in the net.
Imagine my joy when the
wheel of fortune span all the
way around to 40¼lb! Not
only that, it is still the bestlooking
common I’ve ever
seen and no photo can ever
do it justice.
features shoulder straps that are fixed in position
to prevent them from sliding when carrying items
to and from a swim, whilst moulded EVA padding
on the straps provides fantastic comfort. The
attention to detail is nothing short of remarkable
with Fox keen to cover all bases. A further
example of this includes the use of heavy-duty,
shatterproof plastic on all buckles and clips to
prevent them from becoming brittle and breaking
when exposed to cold temperatures. And rather
than using ‘bog-standard’ black for the clips and
buckles the Royale range utilizes a carpy green
colour for an extra touch of quality.
Make no mistake about this is a serious range of
luggage that has been designed by anglers for
anglers. It is destined to become a top seller in
If you know about any illegal fish
movements, either here or abroad,
you’re supporting theft, gross animal
cruelty and the potential demise of an
entire species by keeping it to yourself.
Not only is the illegal movement of fish
incredibly cruel on the fish in transit;
they have to be destroyed if found
before stocking.
If they’re not found, they’re
stocked into the waters of greedy,
unscrupulous fishery owners,
where the diseases they may*
have can fester and spread to other fisheries;
potentially wiping out an entire species.
So if you know anything, contact the charity
CRIMESTOPPERS on the number shown or at
www.crimestoppers-uk.org YOU WILL
REMAIN COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS.
Calls and online forms are not traced
or recorded, no personal details will be
taken and you will not go to court.
If you’re wrong, then the people
involved will have no problem. If
you’re right, you may save the life of
every carp in the country. Your call...
* The only reason to move fish illegally is to save money by ignoring health certification and fish welfare measures put in place to save fishes’ lives.
