Tackling midwater
playing around with a couple
of new hook patterns from the
Nash TT range over the last
year or so.
As soon as I got my first
packet of Fang Twisters I knew
it was a winner. The square-ish
shape of the bend along with
the needle-sharp point suits my
simple line-aligner rigs to a tee.
Although the palm test in no
way resembles what happens
in a carp’s mouth, I do believe
that a rig that turns well on
the palm will hook carp more
effectively than one that won’t.
While the Twisters make the
perfect choice for my bottom
and balanced baits, I’ve come

to like the Gapers for my popup
rigs. The extra wide gape
and razor sharp point seems to
want to reach out and grab the
carp. Despite the sticky sharp
but durable reputation of the
Nash hooks, it goes without
saying you should check the
point of any hook on every cast.
It’s attention to detail like this
that can make all the difference.

The hooklink is something that
I really do like to keep simple in
all but the trickiest of situations;
a simple length of either Bullet
mono or 20lb Ultrasilk suffices.
I now steer away from the
many coated braids because
it seems to be what everyone
and his dog uses nowadays.
Offering a presentation that is
different to the norm is another
‘small thing’ that can make a
difference. When the carp have
made a couple of visits to the
bank and are getting a bit wary,
I employ the Triggalink. The way
this unique product stretches
when tensioned really gives the
carp an unfathomable mouthful,
