Message from Our Executive Director
and Board President
For 33 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria has been helping children and youth in communities from Sooke to
Salt Spring Island, and because of this support thousands of children, youth, and adults can name a person in their
life who made a positive and lasting difference.
Most of you are aware of the devasting affects of bullying. Our programs reduce bullying. Studies have shown that
youth who have been mentored are 34 % less likely to allow themselves to be victimized or bullied by peers. We
positively affect our community and make a difference by providing mentoring programs for children and youth.
Our successes this fiscal year included:
3 690 children and youth asked Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria for help from a mentor.
3 Thankfully over 700 volunteers supported the agency from events to leadership, and 585 volunteered to mentor
children on a weekly basis. Volunteers who mentored contributed an estimated 28,698 volunteer hours, allowing over
87% of funds raised to go directly to supporting our programs.
3 82% of children who applied were matched with an assessed, trained, and supervised mentor who met with the
child weekly for up to four hours to help the child build resiliency, confidence and self-esteem, to learn new problem-solving
skills, and to help them connect, engage, and succeed at school, at home, and in the community.
3 Staff members participated in 14 different community based boards and committees, which allowed them to
provide information and data about emerging trends, but also to solicit information and ideas about issues, challenges,
opportunities and transferable solutions that potentially impact our clients.
3 18 children and six mentors moved into a new relationship through Mentoring Hockey, a focusing pilot program
focused on teamwork, responsibility, respect and self-confidence. Participants learned that a goal was more than a puck
in the net.
3 We developed and implemented Focus Mentoring, a program for children and youth who have been referred to our
organization because they need additional and sustained support in their lives to help manage and overcome significant
challenges.
3 Our In School Mentoring Program went into its 14th year and we continued to build on our positive partnerships
with elementary, middle, and secondary schools on Southern Vancouver Island.
3 Go Girls continued to be an asset in the community as it has been effective at both Middle and Elementary
Schools. The program lends itself to addressing gaps in service for early adolescent girls and has proven valuable in a
variety of demographics filling needs in inner city schools as well as higher income populations.
3 We enjoyed a successful year with events and were excited to launch Bowl for Kids Sake. This national fundraiser
brought the community together, reaching new supporters and building new fundraising relationships.
Thank you to everyone who supported Big Brothers Big Sisters in so many ways. We look forward to a new year of
continuing success.
Programs
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria positively affects our community by providing mentoring
programs for children and youth, which enhance their sense of belonging, self-worth, resiliency and capacity to make
healthy, well-informed choices. We serve children and youth between the ages of 7 and 18 years old in 14 Municipalities
from Sooke to Salt Spring Island. In fiscal year 2011/2012 82% of children who applied were matched with an assessed,
trained, and supervised mentor who met with a child weekly to help the child build resiliency, confidence and
self-esteem, to learn new problem-solving skills, to introduce new learning and activities and to help them connect,
engage, and succeed at school, at home, and in the community. We currently offer 9 different site-based or community-based
mentoring programs targeted at different volunteer groups and different client groups, these programs have
been developed in response to identified social issues or challenges. The programs offered in each community vary
and are determined by need.
Programs
Community-Based Mentoring Programs
Big Brothers, Big Sisters or a Big Sister with a Little
Brother
A volunteer mentor is matched as a “Big Brother” or “Big
Sister” to a child or youth between the ages of 7 and
17 years. The mentor provides consistent encouragement,
support and friendship investing in the relationship
through weekly visits which focus on fun, support and
shared interests.
Couples Mentoring Program
A ‘couple’ is two people who have been in a stable relationship
for at least 2 years and apply to mentor a child
together. Couples are matched with a Little Brother in
the community who is seeking additional support through
friendship and mentoring.
Big Bunch Program
A volunteer mentor is matched with two to four Little
Brothers in the community. “Bunches” are of the same
age, share common interests and are looking to make
new friends. With the support of a mentor they are busy
out in the community enjoying activities together.
Within this program:
► 34% of the children are less likely to allow
them-selves to be victimized or bullied by
peers.
► 90% of the children served live within a single
parent family
► 61% of household incomes were identifiied as
the working poor
► 93% of children participated in little or no
community activity
In-School Mentoring Program:
Local schools and Big brothers Big Sisters work together
to address the needs of our most vulnerable children.
Volunteer mentors are matched with an elementary school
student who has been referred to In School Mentoring
because of a shared concern for the child’s social development.
Mentors attend the school for 1 hour each week
to spend quality time with a child.
As a result:
► 48% of children less likely to have behaviour
problems in school.
► 43% of children less likely to have conduct
problems in school.
► 2 X more likely to have high levels of school
bonding and commitment
Teen Mentoring Program:
Local High Schools support their neighbouring Elementary
Schools through Teen Mentoring and the end result is a
stronger community. A teen mentor spends one hour per
week in a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a child
for a minimum of one academic year.
Teen mentors feel greater empathy for others and an increased
sense of responsibility. Through the teen mentoring
experience they learned:
► How one person can really make a difference
in the life of another person.
► How to be a leader and have fun with kids.
► Teen mentoring changed the way that they see
themselves or others.
“Thanks to all of you, my son is now a stronger kid, mentally and physically. We couldn’t have done it
without Big Brothers/Big Sisters and I hope someday we’ll be able to repay you for all you’ve done for
our family.” - grateful parent
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds
Female volunteers between the ages of 19 and 25 mentor
a group of girls aged 9-13 years who have been referred
to the program as there is a shared concern for their
readiness to enter Middle School. The program focuses
on encouraging physical activity, participation, healthy
choices and developing a positive self-image.
► 39% of girls stated they would go to their
friends for advice before their parents.
► 46% of girls reported involvement with cyber
bullying.
The Impact of Focus Mentoring
Focus Mentoring
Focus Mentoring is a program for children and youth who
have been referred to Big Brothers Big Sisters because
they need additional and sustained support in their lives
to help manage and overcome significant challenges.
They live in families who are struggling to cope with an
individual or family-based mental-health challenge and
are requesting a mentor through our Community Mentoring
Program. Focus is intended to increase supports to
families, extend match relationships, offer relevant training
to mentors and additional support to families.
Mentoring Hockey
Mentoring Hockey launched as a pilot program that
focused on developing teamwork, responsibility, respect
and self-confidence in its youth participants through group
mentorship in a recreational environment. The participants
are between the ages of 7-11 years old and face multiple
barriers having limited access to recreational activities.
Through mentoring in a team and sports environment the
participants build confidence and self-esteem, increase
inclusion and engagement, and enhance team-work and
problem-solving.
Above and beyond the usual stresses of growing up children are caregiving for parents or other siblings, their attendance
at school is sporadic and they are disconnected from a community of support. This was the case for Lucy a thirteen year
old girl living alone with her mom. When we first met Lucy and her mom they came through the doors of Big Brothers Big
Sisters wondering if it was possible to find a big sister for Lucy as she had some special challenges which made it difficult
for her to form relationships. Lucy has Autism; she is a brilliant artist, struggles socially, is an only child and has no other
family.
Lucy’s mom struggled with her health, sharing that she battled depression and other health complications. Lucy often
stayed home from school so she could care for her mom. In June 2011 we matched Lucy with Sarah and identified them
as needing additional support through Focus mentoring. Sarah in her twenties was eager to become a big sister, she also
loved art and knowing the relationship might have some challenges felt she could make a difference in Lucy’s life.
While the relationship had a healthy start it quickly became challenging for Sarah. Lucy remained at home, isolated and
increasingly difficult to reach. Mom’s health was deteriorating and Sarah quickly found herself overwhelmed, concerned
for Lucy and feeling powerless. With the extra support offered through Focus Mentoring Sarah received the information
she needed to support Lucy. Through training in youth mental Health, learning disabilities and greif and loss Sarah had
new tools to support their relationship.
In late 2011, Lucy’s mom passed away. For both young women this was their first experience supporting a loved one in
dying. Their relationship met one of life’s biggest challenges and because they had the support they needed, their relationship
survived and they remain an important part of each other’s life.
Awards
YouthNOW Award
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria’s Teen Mentors
were awarded the Volunteer Group Award at the 14th
Annual United Way YouthNOW Awards Gala for their
incredible dedication to mentoring in the community!
15-18 from Edward Milne Community School, Belmont
Secondary, and Camosun College. They were
truly extraordinary as over the 2011-2012 school
year they collectively invested over 500 hours into
children within the Langford and Sooke communities.
They recognized the importance of cultivating positive
relationships and helping youth reach their full potential.
They were dedicated to empowering, supporting,
and valuing youth within their community and willing
to put aside 60 minutes each week to be positive role
models/friends to their Little Buddies. Congratultions
to our Teen Mentors!
Trail Blazer Award
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria wins a National Award
for Program Innovation!
When it comes to program development everything we do
is in support of our mission which is to provide mentors for
children. We are not in the business of building programs
, our passion rests in building relationships. That being
said we evaluate our services with critical questions;
How do we serve more? How do we strengthen match
relationships? How do we use mentoring as a critical tool
in prevention to support identified service gaps in our
community?
Focus Mentoring was developed in response to these
questions. It allows us to serve our communities most vulnerable
children, to provide additional support to families,
to provide essential training to volunteers and to work in
partnership with existing services. As a new program it
helps address the greater community concern for mental
health.
Thank you to the staff and board for their excellent work in
developing and launching this innovative program.
Fiscal Year in Review
2011-2012 Fiscal Year in Review
The fiscal year brought with it the ongoing challenges of generating grant and fundraising revenue in an economy where
the requests for funding exceed the amount of funding available. To ensure that the quality of our programs and the
number of children Big Brothers Big Sisters serve remain high, we focused on finding efficiencies in our Donation Centre
operations in order to internally generate cash flow. With the introduction of a new web-dialer system, we have been able
to increase the number of calls per day for the collection of used clothing and small household goods. Though the cost
of implementing this new system is reflected as an expense in our 2012 statement of operations and contributes to our
overall deficiency, it will be a valuable tool for the future and has already contributed to positive collection volumes.
2012 has also brought a change to Big Brothers Big Sisters’ bookkeeping service provider. Contracting with Boys and
Girls Club since 2010, we returned to having our bookkeeping done in-house. By doing so, we have been able to improve
the efficiency of and have more control over our accounting processes and financial reporting. It also allows for closer
monitoring of our financial position and more timely short-term cash flow decisions.
Though we ended the 2012 fiscal year with a net deficiency of $63,707 we are optimistic for what 2013 will bring. We
have negotiated a new contract for the Donation Centre operations, evaluated our methods of collections, and secured
new collection partnerships all of which will help Big Brothers Big Sisters generate more revenue. Additionally, we secured
three year funding from United Way for both In School Mentoring and Community Mentoring. Our programs operate
in 13 Municipalities including Sooke and Salt Spring Island making us eligible for consideration for regional funding
through BC Gaming which if successful would see increases to our gaming grant. Further, our office lease expires in May
2013 and we are actively looking for a new home that will decrease building occupancy costs. These are just a few of the
positive changes that, along with our continued focus on pursuing new opportunities for funding and managing expenses,
will ensure that we can continue to provide the highest quality of programs to a growing number of children in 2013 and
beyond.
We value the ongoing support of the community, our donors, sponsors, and volunteers. It is because of you that we are
able to make a difference in children’s lives. Thank you!
Donation Centre
How do we collect more and spend less? This question was used to guide growth and decision making in
what was a challenging year in our Donation Center operations. We found ourselves in a year where expenses were
necessary to build systems and secure tools which would support us into the future. We did this knowing we may not see
the positive results until the following fiscal year. Change was necessary, it was managed carefully and with the support of
a strong and dedicated staff team the transition was smooth.
Challenges were often beyond our control and included:
► Significant fluctuations in gas prices
► Changes to wages in response to minimum wage increases
► Economic downturns affecting purchasing and ultimately the availability of used clothing
► Increases to leasing costs
► Use of a trailer in product delivery
We responded quickly and carefully to challenges looking for efficiencies in current systems and new opportunities for
collections through collaboration. We implemented a web based dialler which meant less down time between calls,
improved data collection, no long distance charges, stronger staff engagement, less paper and copying and increased
donations.
We began to address truck use on weekends and determined that our least expensive method of collection was Attended
Donation Stations. We moved to pilot a site in the West Shore, a community who demonstrated steady growth in product
through weekly routes. The attended site was set up at the Canadian Tire location in the West Shore on Saturdays.
Community clothing drives were implemented encouraging people to bring the product to us. This included the launch of
Fill- A- Truck a new fundraising opportunity for community groups. Service groups and Prom Committees embraced the
opportunity to raise funds by gathering clothing and filling a truck with 400 bags.
In the Fall of 2011 we implemented a bin collection program in Cowichan working with the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency
in that community. The bins have proven to be a successful method of collection.
Through the course of the last fiscal year we were not able to meet our projected targets in fundraising however we did
see modest growth and have positioned ourselves well for the next fiscal year.
“I have learned that relationships are fluid; they ebb and flow and I am to remain open at all times.
I have learned to trust; to relax; to allow; and to know that I am good enough to receive all that this
person brings to my life.” Connie, Big Sister
Our Current Reality
Mentored youth simply do better. Our work is truly more vital than ever. The demand for our services has increased
and the challenges within families have escalated.
We are committed to acting proactively and strategically and to that end, we are:
► Focusing on our core programs to strengthen and improve their quality, safety, sustainability and positive
outcomes
► Continuing to grow to meet our current capacity and realistically charting our future course
► Collaborating with partners for creative and effective solutions to serve more children
► Ensuring every dollar is used efficiently and effectively to be fiscally and socially accountable
Currently over 87% of funds raised go directly to supporting our programs. We look to the community for clothing donations,
partnerships and participation in our events. We know that when we work together we can accomplish great things.
In 2013 Big Brothers Big Sisters will look for a new home. Guiding our search is our goal “spend less and serve more” and
it is our hope that the community will help us find the 4,000 square feet of office space we will need to continue our work
with children and families.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will celebrate 100 years in Canada in 2013. The year full of celebration will see the launch of new
research findings which are the result of a five year study of mentoring in Big Brothers Big Sisters. In Victoria our agency
played a critical role in this study and we look forward to sharing the results with the community.
Please join us for an exciting year ahead as we celebrate and honour the mentors who had such a significant impact on
our lives.
Volunteering
Thank you to our Volunteers who strengthen our community
one relationship at a time.
“I honestly thought I would be joining your
organization to “do” something; to “give
back” in some way. It simply never occurred
to me how much I would be receiving. What
a gift your organization has given me.”
Value of Mentoring
What difference does a year make? When I looked to Big Brothers Big Sisters for a mentor for my daughter (Taylor) I
wasn’t sure what to expect. I was aware almost immediately of the time and care that went into finding the best match,
there were lots of conversations with both Taylor and I about our interests, our schedules and our goals.
We were finally introduced to a mentor, a big sister who was friendly and eager to share her time. It was explained to us
that Heather would be our Big Sister for one year and while I was hoping for a longer commitment Taylor and I agreed we
would like to get to know her.
Taylor and Heather just became the perfect match, they did everything together. The activities were endless, they were
like best friends going swimming, to hockey games and school events. They called each other Little Sister, Big Sister
shared a friendship necklace and truly enjoyed being together.
Having Heather in Taylors’ life was amazing, the best experience ever, we looked forward to every week. Together for one
year does not seem like much but it was the biggest year of my daughter’s life. My daughter grew from the experience,
she became more confident and the joy she was experiencing lifted me as well.
My daughter spent one year with the kindest person I have ever met, as a mother you can’t ask for more than that and I
know the memories will last a lifetime. I consider Heather part of our family and while she is no longer in Victoria we still
hear from her and we will look forward to the day when we can visit again.
Suzanne (a grateful parent)
I just wanted to express our appreciation for everything that we experienced in our dealings with Big Brothers and Big
Sisters. The staff were always very professional and attentive to the details in ensuring the best possible match. We were
supported 100% along the way.
Nick’s first match was with Andrew. He was a young university student that worked almost full time with Westjet. Andrew’s
dedication to his little brother was such that no matter where Andrew was, if he was flying with Westjet, he would call
and make arrangements to see Nick. There was never a week that we didn’t hear from Andrew. Nick and Andrew played
chess together, jogged, played tennis, made soap, cooked pizzas together, visited Fort Rodd Hill, visited the Aviation
Museum, watched a Vancouver Whitecaps soccer game, and any other activity that would just bring them together. It was
great for Angus to have an older male that took an interest in him and would devote a few hours a week in just hanging
out.
We believe that this is a wonderful organization for boys and girls that takes an enormous amount of time in ensuring that
a match will work, that the two are compatible and provides support all along the way. In closing, we just want to
acknowledge that we are very appreciative of the opportunity Nick had to spend quality time with an older male role
model, at a particular time of his life when the extra support truly made a difference.
With Thanks,
Andrea
(Nick’s mother)
