Message from Our Executive Director and Board President For 33 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria has been helping children and youth in communities from Sooke to Salt Spring Island, and because of this support thousands of children, youth, and adults can name a person in their life who made a positive and lasting difference. Most of you are aware of the devasting affects of bullying. Our programs reduce bullying. Studies have shown that youth who have been mentored are 34 % less likely to allow themselves to be victimized or bullied by peers. We positively affect our community and make a difference by providing mentoring programs for children and youth. Our successes this fiscal year included: 3 690 children and youth asked Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria for help from a mentor. 3 Thankfully over 700 volunteers supported the agency from events to leadership, and 585 volunteered to mentor children on a weekly basis. Volunteers who mentored contributed an estimated 28,698 volunteer hours, allowing over 87% of funds raised to go directly to supporting our programs. 3 82% of children who applied were matched with an assessed, trained, and supervised mentor who met with the child weekly for up to four hours to help the child build resiliency, confidence and self-esteem, to learn new problem-solving skills, and to help them connect, engage, and succeed at school, at home, and in the community. 3 Staff members participated in 14 different community based boards and committees, which allowed them to provide information and data about emerging trends, but also to solicit information and ideas about issues, challenges, opportunities and transferable solutions that potentially impact our clients. 3 18 children and six mentors moved into a new relationship through Mentoring Hockey, a focusing pilot program focused on teamwork, responsibility, respect and self-confidence. Participants learned that a goal was more than a puck in the net. 3 We developed and implemented Focus Mentoring, a program for children and youth who have been referred to our organization because they need additional and sustained support in their lives to help manage and overcome significant challenges. 3 Our In School Mentoring Program went into its 14th year and we continued to build on our positive partnerships with elementary, middle, and secondary schools on Southern Vancouver Island. 3 Go Girls continued to be an asset in the community as it has been effective at both Middle and Elementary Schools. The program lends itself to addressing gaps in service for early adolescent girls and has proven valuable in a variety of demographics filling needs in inner city schools as well as higher income populations. 3 We enjoyed a successful year with events and were excited to launch Bowl for Kids Sake. This national fundraiser brought the community together, reaching new supporters and building new fundraising relationships.
