Fiscal Year in Review
2011-2012 Fiscal Year in Review
The fiscal year brought with it the ongoing challenges of generating grant and fundraising revenue in an economy where
the requests for funding exceed the amount of funding available. To ensure that the quality of our programs and the
number of children Big Brothers Big Sisters serve remain high, we focused on finding efficiencies in our Donation Centre
operations in order to internally generate cash flow. With the introduction of a new web-dialer system, we have been able
to increase the number of calls per day for the collection of used clothing and small household goods. Though the cost
of implementing this new system is reflected as an expense in our 2012 statement of operations and contributes to our
overall deficiency, it will be a valuable tool for the future and has already contributed to positive collection volumes.
2012 has also brought a change to Big Brothers Big Sisters’ bookkeeping service provider. Contracting with Boys and
Girls Club since 2010, we returned to having our bookkeeping done in-house. By doing so, we have been able to improve
the efficiency of and have more control over our accounting processes and financial reporting. It also allows for closer
monitoring of our financial position and more timely short-term cash flow decisions.
Though we ended the 2012 fiscal year with a net deficiency of $63,707 we are optimistic for what 2013 will bring. We
have negotiated a new contract for the Donation Centre operations, evaluated our methods of collections, and secured
new collection partnerships all of which will help Big Brothers Big Sisters generate more revenue. Additionally, we secured
three year funding from United Way for both In School Mentoring and Community Mentoring. Our programs operate
in 13 Municipalities including Sooke and Salt Spring Island making us eligible for consideration for regional funding
through BC Gaming which if successful would see increases to our gaming grant. Further, our office lease expires in May
2013 and we are actively looking for a new home that will decrease building occupancy costs. These are just a few of the
positive changes that, along with our continued focus on pursuing new opportunities for funding and managing expenses,
will ensure that we can continue to provide the highest quality of programs to a growing number of children in 2013 and
beyond.
We value the ongoing support of the community, our donors, sponsors, and volunteers. It is because of you that we are
able to make a difference in children’s lives. Thank you!
