<strong>Julius</strong> <strong>Caesar</strong>: <strong>Newspaper</strong> <strong>Assignment</strong><br />

Task: Create a newspaper about <strong>Julius</strong> <strong>Caesar</strong>.<br />

You will be working individually to create a newspaper that reflects what you have<br />

learned/discussed/studied in <strong>Julius</strong> <strong>Caesar</strong>. Follow the directions below for each of the<br />

articles you will write. For each Act of the play you will write ONE article. You will also<br />

need to have one final page that reflects the play as a whole, as well as one “Feature<br />

Story”. Your finished product should be a minimum of 7 articles. Each article should be<br />

about 200-250 words. Each article will me worth 5 points each, for a total mark of 35.<br />

*Helpful Hint: Write the articles in a word document first. Once all pieces are written<br />

you can then paste them into Microsoft Publisher so that your assignment looks like a<br />

newspaper.*<br />

1. FEATURE STORY (5 points)<br />

(Setting) Write a feature story on the city- complete with pictures, diagrams, charts,<br />

maps etc. Give a full description of this area of the world, zeroing in on climate,<br />

history, topography, culture, etc.<br />

2. ACT 1 (5 points)<br />

A) NEWS STORY: Report on the <strong>Caesar</strong>‛s defeat of Pompey. Report on the<br />

crowd/Senators‛ reactions, specific details of the defeat, etc.<br />

B) LETTER: We never get to see any of the letters that Cassius leaves around Brutus‛<br />

home to convince him to join the conspiracy. Write one of these letters as Cassius to<br />

Brutus. Explain why Brutus should join the conspiracy, and why <strong>Caesar</strong> deserves to<br />

die.<br />

3. ACT II<br />

A) INTERVIEW: Conduct an interview with a main character involved in the<br />

conspiracy. Touch on her/his background, opinions, reasons for joining, etc...<br />

B) LETTER TO THE EDITOR: You are a concerned person in Rome who has overheard<br />

the plot to kill <strong>Caesar</strong>. Detail to the editor what you have heard (conspiracy plot,<br />

members involved, etc) and your concern for <strong>Caesar</strong>.<br />

4. ACT III (5 points)<br />

A) OBITUARY: Write an obituary for <strong>Julius</strong> <strong>Caesar</strong> as if you are either Brutus or<br />

Anthony. The character you choose must be reflected in your writing style, emotion,<br />

and word choice. Make sure to include his successes, details of his death, and any<br />

other important and relevant information.<br />

5. ACT IV (5 points)<br />

A) LETTER: Write Portia‛s suicide note as if it were accidentally sent to the newspaper.<br />

Be sure to include her reasons for committing suicide, her personal beliefs of the events<br />

that led her to commit suicide, etc.<br />

B) GOSSIP COLUMN: Write a gossip column detailing the fight between Cassius and<br />

Brutus, AS WELL as Antony‛s true feelings for Lepidus.<br />

6. ACT V<br />

OR<br />

A) ADVICE COLUMN: Write an advice column as one character from this Act requesting<br />

advice on a specific issue. Be sure to include the advice given to this character.<br />

B) NEWS STORY This is your chance to break the big news story of the final battle.<br />

You are a reporter who is reporting from the battlefield itself about what you have<br />

witnessed, the outcome of the final battle, etc.<br />

7. ENTIRE PLAY<br />

ONE PAGE WITH A VARIETY OF SPECIAL FEATURES and/or CLASSIFIED ADS: i.e.<br />

horoscope - weather - crossword - comics - public opinion polls - display ads - sports<br />

columns - hobby columns… Insert a number of classified ads ("For sale", Wanted, etc.)<br />

from a variety of key characters in the play. *These cannot be “random”- they must<br />

somehow represent issues, characters, or themes from the play.*<br />
