<strong>2040</strong> MASTER PLAN<br />

• Completion <strong>of</strong> 120 acres <strong>of</strong> the total 146 acres <strong>of</strong> container yard scheduled to be<br />

completed by 2011 to accommodate straddle carriers at NIT South<br />

• Acquisition <strong>of</strong> additional straddle carriers to replace the older rubber tire gantry cranes<br />

• Extension <strong>of</strong> NIT North’s Wharf by 900’ and acquisition <strong>of</strong> three 100-foot gage cranes to<br />

accommodate more vessels<br />

• Completion <strong>of</strong> 28 acres at NIT North for additional container storage space<br />

• Construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-terminal <strong>of</strong>fice building to free up operating space, and to relocate<br />

administrative personnel and personal vehicles <strong>of</strong>f site<br />

• Near completion <strong>of</strong> Phase 1 <strong>of</strong> NIT Central Rail Yard to increase rail throughput<br />

<strong>The</strong>se master plan improvements at NIT have upgraded terminal infrastructure and have<br />

increased capacity. In addition to these improvements, several other key projects are scheduled<br />

to be completed to provide the maximum capacity at the terminal. <strong>The</strong>se scheduled key projects<br />

include:<br />

Key features scheduled for Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) South Build-Out <strong>Plan</strong>:<br />

• Completion <strong>of</strong> the remaining 26 <strong>of</strong> the 146 acre backlands development which will<br />

provide additional container storage and accommodate straddle carriers. Completion <strong>of</strong><br />

remaining area is scheduled by 2012<br />

• An automated gate system<br />

Key features <strong>of</strong> the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) North Build-Out <strong>Plan</strong>:<br />

• Installation <strong>of</strong> a rapid dispatch facility and transfer zone enhancements by <strong>2040</strong><br />

• Acquisition and repair <strong>of</strong> the Beltline Rail Yard<br />

• Construction <strong>of</strong> the grade crossing at the intersection <strong>of</strong> Hampton Blvd. and North<br />

Gate Road (VDOT Project)<br />

• New gates access to the I-564 connector and third crossing<br />

Key features <strong>of</strong> the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) Central Build-Out <strong>Plan</strong>:<br />

• Demolition <strong>of</strong> warehouses and replacement with CFS and cold storage warehouse to<br />

accommodate the I-564 Interchange and Third Crossing projects<br />

• Renovate and expand rail operations and the intermodal yard, predominately the NIT<br />

Central Rail Yard<br />
