Shelley Long and Bette Midler are
an unlikely combination but in Outra-
geous Fortune, the combination works.
Selecting these two women to play
the leads in Outrageous Fortune was a
stroke of genius. Their past roles serve
to highlight the obvious differences be-
tween Long’s character, Lauren, and
Midler’s Sandy.
Lauren comes from an upper class fa-
mily. She went to all the right schools,
took acting lessons and has been wor-
king on her career as an actress for ye-
ars - without making any money.
In contrast, Sandy has lower class
roots. She is outgoing, brash and she
uses her sexuality to -get what she
wants. It rarely fails. ^
Despite their obvious differences,
Lauren and Sandy team up to track
down Michael, a man they have both
been dating-at the same time.
They end up with the CIA and the
KGB on their trail. George Carlin, as
Frank, an entrepreneur and honorary
Indian in Mexico, lends an unwilling
but helping hand and becomes heavily
involved in their antics.
Carlin plays this character to the hilt.
His first appearance on the screen
shows him staggering drunk and in
need of money. He offers several servi-
ces to Lauren and Sandy for twenty-
bucks’. Finally he agrees to help them
track down their man. This error in jud-
gement leaves him standing on the
street wearing a dress and Sandy’s
sweater while the women search a
house of ill repute for Michael.
several sticky situations and must uses
their quick wits and acting talents to
free themselves. They change roles so
quickly, you must keep a close eye on
what is happening for fear of getting
lost in the shuffle.
When the search for Michael takes
them to the shady side of town, Sandy
and Lauren find themselves fact-to-face
with some dealers. Until this point,
Lauren has been a classic Long charac-
ter. Improvising and calling on years of
acting class, she wields a toy gun taken
from a child and announces they are
the heat’. She holds them a gunpoint
until they give them information about
Michael’s whereabouts. They in turn
give Sandy a box full of money as a
bribe.
The story is one we’ve seen several
times before but the scenes and situa-
tions are new and intriguing. It is diffi-
cult to find a time when you feel -it is
safe to replenish the popcorn supply.
Make sure you keep your eyes open or
you may miss something important.
This movie is fast paced and subtle
lines are constantly being tossed back
and forth between the characters. You
are not likely to hear any snoring, from
the audience at least, during showtime.
In all, Outrageous Fortune is an ex-
cellent form of entertainmentguaran-
teed to keep your interest and tickle
your funny bone. Just don’t expect to
have to read between the lines for a
deeper meaning; There isn’t one.
Overall, it gets an 8.5 out of 10 here.
