Carol Cruwys has crossed many a
river and she has certainly conquered
many a mountain.
Cruwys, 23, still has a full life
ahead other, yet in some aspects, it se-
ems as though she has already led a
full life.
She has experienced more ups and
downs in her athletic life alone so far
than some see i,n a lifetime.
From her figure skating years (6’-! 1
years old), through her high school and
college years of basketball and volley-
ball, Cruwys has encountered every
physical injury imaginable:
Everything from a chipped bone in
her lower back, to a smashed cheek-
bone, to her present conditions of bursi-
tis tendonitis in her shoulder and her
torn anterior cruciate, (the ligament.
that causes the leg to hyper extend),
has left Cruwys watching from the side-
lines at many basketball arid volleyball
games.
"It’s heartbreaking just to watch,"
confesses Cruwys, a dedicated athlete
who wastes no time recovering from her
injuries.
"I push myself because I just want
to be out on the court where I can strive
to be the best that I can be," stated last
years Woman Athlete of the Year.
Will nothing slow this young
woman down?
No, nothing. Even bearing her
daughter Jamie Jean, (who is now
three), was not enough to see Cruwys’
athletic career come to an end.
Cruwys, who completed the first
year of Business Administration and,
HAIRPLACE
ft SPA
SOlVia GSAHAM
who is now in her second and final year
of Sports Administration at Durham
College, has for the most part dedicated
her life to sports. (Except of course, for
her precious time set aside for Jamie
Jean.)
So what’s in the future for the Ca-
nadian College Athlectic Association’s
i (CCAA) Canadian All-Star?
For starters, Cruwys plans to return
to Durham College in Sept. for the
Early Childhood Education (ECE) program.
At this time, she will also play
her last year of varsity sports. (According
to rules and regulations, a person
is limited to a maximum of four years
of varsity play.)
This desire for her ECE will be just
the beginning for Cruwys.
Her long term goal is to own and
operate her own nursery school. To take
it one step further, she wants to combine
her sports administration with her
early childhood education and dedicate
and hour or two a day to sport activities
for the pre-schoolers.
"I want to have ’sporting school’ for
pre-schoolers, to introduce them to and
interest them in sports at an early age.
I see many people out there with athletics
abilities, that could have been even
better, if they had started When they
were younger", said Cruwys.
Cruwys recognizes the pre-school
age to be the ideal time to teach and
assist young children with mobility
skills;
With a smile, Cruwys says, "I was
inspired by the Soviet Union. They start
their children at the pre-school level,
and look at how well they do."
