soils that were formed <strong>the</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ue to benefit present-day agriculture.<br />

After this relatively "wet" period, <strong>the</strong> climate once aga<strong>in</strong><br />

worsened. Precipitation became highly variable and <strong>the</strong> amount<br />

of ra<strong>in</strong>fall dropped considerably, caus<strong>in</strong>g lakes, river systems,<br />

and ra<strong>in</strong> forests to recede and lead<strong>in</strong>g to a renewed advance of<br />

<strong>the</strong> desert. Today climatic history still determ<strong>in</strong>es to a considerable<br />

extent <strong>the</strong> potential for agriculture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahel</strong>. In many<br />

areas, people live <strong>in</strong> an environment that took many thousands<br />
