Who are the Germans?
Verse 5: He remembers his worthies; they stumble in their walk; they make haste to her walls, and the defense is
prepared.
Verse 6: The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.
Verse 5 implies that we shall soon see a fortress Germany and Europe. See Isaiah 5:27. The gateway into Nineveh
was opened to the enemy. So Berlin shall be opened up to the hordes of the east via Poland.
Verse 7: It is decreed: She shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up; and her maidservants shall lead
her as with the voice of doves, beating their breasts.
Assyria will eventually be led away captive like she was anciently. "Her maidservants" probably refers to her European
allies who will fall with her.
Verse 8: Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water, now they flee away. "Halt! Halt!" they cry; but no one
turns back.
Age-old Germany will be doomed. The Germans will flee from the barbarity of the advancing Russians and Orientals.
See Isaiah 13:14; Jeremiah 46:16; 50:16; 51:9, 11-13.
Verse 9: Take spoil of silver! Take spoil of gold! There is no end of treasure, or wealth of every desirable prize.
Verse 10: She is empty, desolate, and waste! The heart melts, and the knees shake; much pain is in every side,
and all their faces are drained of color.
The incredible wealth and riches of Germany in the end-time will be stripped from her by the East. See Isaiah 33:1, 4;
II Chronicles 36:10; Ezekiel 26:12; Daniel 11:38, 43. Germany will be utterly devastated.
Verse 11: Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion walked, the
lioness and lion's cub, and no one made them afraid?
The dwelling place of the lions is their den, the headquarters of Assyria. In the Bible, lions are symbolic of Judah,
Christ, and his antithesis, Satan (I Peter 5:8) as well as Germany: See Job 4:10-11; Isaiah 5:29; Jeremiah 4:4-7;
6:23; 2:14-15, 18; 49:19; 50:17, 44; Ezekiel 38:13; Hosea 5:13-14; Joel 1:6; Zechariah 11:3. No wonder, for a
major Assyrian symbol especially on the wall reliefs, was the lion. lxiv
Verse 12: The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, killed for his lionesses, filled his caves with prey, and his
dens with flesh.
Verse 13: "Behold, I am against you," says the Lord of hosts, "I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the
sword shall devour your young lions; I Will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers
shall be heard no more.
The Germans will fill their homes with plunder and riches. See Psalms 17:9-13; Jeremiah 51:34. Their "messengers"
(Ambassadors) will no more be spreading their propaganda around the world. For "I am against you." See Jeremiah
50:12, 31; 51:25, and 21:13.
Note too how the Assyrians are referred to as lions. A major art motif of Assyria was the lion (see my comments on
this in chapters one and seven). Today, there are no lions in the Middle East. They have either been killed or migrated
away, like the Assyrians themselves, whom they symbolized. In history, only Assyrian kings are mentioned as hunters
of lions "and they liked to be represented in this dangerous exploit" lxiv . They were cruel, even to animals. God's Word
forbids the needless killing and maiming of animals simply for fun. Hunting for pleasure, to see animals in pain and
agony, losing their limbs, mates, parents and lives is wrong. However, if it is strictly controlled and undertaken for
food, clothing or population control, it is acceptable. See Proverbs 12:10; Deuteronomy 22:6-7, 10; 25:4; 14:21;
Lamentations 3:52; Mark 1:13; Exodus 23:5. Therefore, be kind to dumb animals!
Chapter 3, Verse 1: Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery. Its victim never departs.
Verse 2: The noise of a whip and the noise of rattling wheels, of galloping horses, of clattering chariots!
