4 / <strong><strong>The</strong>osophy</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qabbãlãh<br />

has it that its secret wisdom is traceable back to <strong>the</strong> Deity,<br />

who communicated <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e to a “select company of<br />

angels.” <strong>The</strong>se formed a “<strong>the</strong>osophic school <strong>in</strong> Paradise,”<br />

where Qabbãlãh was taught to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> order that, after<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall, <strong>the</strong>y might teach Adam and Eve (early humanity),<br />

thus enabl<strong>in</strong>g mank<strong>in</strong>d to exercise free will and acquire selfconscious<br />

nobility and wisdom. But noth<strong>in</strong>g esoteric was<br />

ever written down : it was considered a desecration to commit<br />

esoteric truth to writ<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>the</strong> written word cannot<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner truth, be<strong>in</strong>g but a symbol, <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>d or<br />

bark. <strong>The</strong> secret wisdom was held to be <strong>in</strong>communicable<br />

except by master to pupil.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jews have preserved among <strong>the</strong>ir mystical works<br />

and letters. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terrelations of <strong>the</strong> 22 letters of <strong>the</strong><br />

Hebrew alphabet with <strong>the</strong> 10 numbers form <strong>the</strong> 32 marvelous<br />

paths of wisdom. <strong>The</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>g is regarded as <strong>the</strong><br />

syn<strong>the</strong>sis of <strong>the</strong> 22 letters which, with <strong>the</strong> addition of <strong>the</strong><br />

ten sêfîrõth or “numbers,” make <strong>the</strong> complete syn<strong>the</strong>sis of<br />

creation. Just as alphabetic characters form <strong>the</strong> structure<br />

of speech and its communication of <strong>in</strong>telligence, so <strong>the</strong><br />

characters of <strong>the</strong> Hebrew alphabet symbolize <strong>the</strong> elements<br />

of <strong>the</strong> universe: <strong>in</strong>, above, and around <strong>the</strong> elements of <strong>the</strong><br />

universe <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e hierarchy, of which <strong>the</strong> elements<br />

are <strong>the</strong> outward expressions. <strong>The</strong> 22 letters are sometimes<br />

divided <strong>in</strong>to Three Mo<strong>the</strong>rs — a triad, a heptad, and a dodecad<br />

— correspond<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> three primal letters A M S<br />
