dissociate and scatter, to return <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>r’s bosom at<br />
<strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> great day, and re-become one with her; when<br />
it is cool<strong>in</strong>g it becomes radiant, and <strong>the</strong> sons expand and<br />
contract through <strong>the</strong>ir own selves and hearts; <strong>the</strong>y embrace<br />

Turn<strong>in</strong>g to Qabbãlãh we discover <strong>the</strong> same ideas. “Darkness<br />
alone filled <strong>the</strong> Boundless All” recalls ¿ay<strong>in</strong>, “no-th<strong>in</strong>g,”<br />
fill<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> spaces of space — that condition of no-th<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
where <strong>the</strong> seeds of future sêfîrõthal trees of cosmic lives<br />
are still sleep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> darkness. From ¿ay<strong>in</strong>, darkness or no-<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g-ness, comes ¿ÿ<strong>in</strong> sõf, limitless or boundless fields of<br />
<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itude: <strong>the</strong> “one form of existence” that stretches “boundless,<br />
<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite, causeless, <strong>in</strong> dreamless sleep.” ¿Ÿ<strong>in</strong> sõf, <strong>the</strong><br />
mystery of mysteries, is called <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zohar <strong>the</strong> “closed eye”<br />
because <strong>the</strong> lives sleep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re<strong>in</strong> do not perceive what is<br />
“sensed by <strong>the</strong> opened eye of <strong>the</strong> Dangma [<strong>in</strong>itiate],” which<br />
“opened eye” <strong>in</strong> Qabbãlãh is termed Ke<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> Crown or<br />
first emanation. As <strong>the</strong> Zohar states:<br />
When <strong>the</strong> Unknown of <strong>the</strong> Unknown wished to manifest<br />
Itself, It began by produc<strong>in</strong>g a po<strong>in</strong>t; as long as that lum<strong>in</strong>ous<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t had not gone out of Its bosom, <strong>the</strong> Inf<strong>in</strong>ite was<br />
still completely unknown and diffused no light.<br />
— 1:2 a, Myer, p. 127<br />
<strong>The</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>ous or light po<strong>in</strong>t, however, does periodically<br />
“appear through its energy,” for <strong>the</strong> seeds of future<br />
worlds cannot rema<strong>in</strong> forever with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> closed eye of ¿ÿ<strong>in</strong><br />
sõf. <strong>The</strong> vibration of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g universe or sêfîrõthal<br />
tree quickens <strong>the</strong> sleep<strong>in</strong>g seeds, and <strong>the</strong> “Light that was<br />
wrapped <strong>in</strong> Darkness,” as <strong>the</strong> Zohar phrases it, floods <strong>the</strong>
