Scarangello Scholarship program at Cardinal
Spellman High School. e tighe Hidalgo
Foundation and the roxanne Donovan and
tom Scarangello Family Foundation were
proud to host this Spellman alumni reception
at the home of mary ann (Scarangello) tighe
’66 and her husband, Dr. David Hidalgo, to
showcase the Spellman community and the
achievement possible through a Catholic
education. a highlight of the evening was
the attendance of special guest, His eminence
timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New
York.
more than sixty guests, including many
graduates of the Scarangello Scholarship
program, enjoyed cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres overlooking Central park from the
Fifth avenue apartment. Spellman president,
rev. trevor Nicholls thanked the Scarangello
Family for their “unending kindness to their
alma mater” and principal, Daniel O’Keefe
spoke briefly on the state of Spellman today
as an independent school. His eminence, Cardinal
Dolan remarked that, “is gathering is a
joyful celebration and grateful acknowledgement
of a truly remarkable commitment

Scarangello Scholarship program gives me a
sense of pride that can never be duplicated.”

Dear alumni and Friends of Cardinal
Spellman High School,
as I compose this letter, the beginning of
the new school year is only a week or so
away. It is a time of anticipation, expectation
– and for faculty, I know, having
spent twenty five years of my life as a
classroom teacher, a certain amount of
trepidation! this last is true whether a
teacher is an ’old hand’ or at the start of

Of course, for a fairly substantial
number of those who work at Spellman,
during July and august life goes on very much as normal. almost all
of us have our vacation time or times but otherwise it is very much
a case of ’business as usual’. the maintenance men repair, clean,
polish and generally refurbish the whole property. the principal,
Vice-principal and their faculty and Secretarial assistants, have to
work on the new schedule and admissions. the guidance Department
continues to labor, largely but by no means exclusively, on
behalf of the members of the outgoing Senior Class. the Finance
Office continues to deal with the pennies, with tuition collection
a constant challenge, and the advancement Office begins to put
together its program for the upcoming year.
On opening day, all this activity comes together when the doors
open and more than fourteen hundred boys and girls bring the whole
enterprise to life once again. they are the ones for whom we work,
plan, prepare – and pray.
to say that question marks presently hang over the whole Catholic
educational enterprise is an understatement to end all understatements.
In many quarters even within the Church itself, the very need
for Catholic schools is being questioned. Certainly the challenges
facing those of us who minister in this area are enormous and growing.
Yet each September, despite all the problems and difficulties,
we begin again with hope renewed. Over the course of the decades,
for a majority of Catholic schools the mission has undoubtedly
changed; substantial numbers of non-Catholic students and large
numbers of Catholic students from non-practicing homes create new
dynamics and challenges. but provided that all those mentioned in
the second paragraph above, i.e. those charged with caring for the
school in one way or another, maintain a vision of life that transcends
this world and reaches into eternity, all will be well.
I thank each and everyone one of you who in any way at all helps
us to realize the vision we have for our Spellman students.

even more importantly, I look
toward the future. Spellman is ready to take even greater steps forward.
Just this past summer, we were blessed to have participated in
a long range Strategic planning meeting for Cardinal Spellman
High School. members of the board of trustees and several other
stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, parents, and
alumni, met to discuss the long term future of Spellman. What an
exhilarating meeting! I saw the Spellman Spirit truly come alive in
this extraordinary group of men and women. I have no doubt that
Spellman will continue to grow in excellence over the next 50 years.
I am also pleased to announce that our college credit program
has grown for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. Students will now
be able to graduate with as much as a full year of college already
completed while still in high school. this is a wonderful head start
for our students academically, but also a tremendous financial relief
for our parents.
Our guidance Offices have been completely renovated.
the student work space is now technologically current with up-to
-date computers and state-of-the-art software. perhaps our most
valuable new software program is known as Naviance. Naviance
is an interactive system that aids students and their families in the
college search process and career choices. It brings technology to
a whole new level for college guidance at Spellman.
Our Sat prep program is running strong. Higher Sat scores
are a goal of every high school and Spellman is no exception. We
are going to be investing tremendous time and effort into helping
our students achieve better scores.
perhaps the most important piece of good news is that enrollment
at Cardinal Spellman High School is up! as many New York
City Catholic schools are losing students and some schools are even
closing, Spellman continues to grow and attract the best students in
New York City. What a beautiful statement to the dedication of the
faculty and staff of Spellman!
these are just some of the many great things that are happening
here. I urge you to stay involved with Spellman and share first hand
in our success. Spellman benefits from the efforts of so many
people like you. I feel truly privileged to serve as principal of such
an amazing school.

High School hosted its annual alumni &
Friends golf Outing at Knollwood Country
Club in elmsford, NY. is sold-out event
welcomed more than 100 golfer and
helped raise $20,000 for the Scholarship
Fund. Despite periods of heavy rain, all
participants enjoyed a wonderful day!

anne dedicated most of her career to
Cardinal Spellman High School. In 1972,
anne began working at Spellman as a history
teacher. anne was later promoted to Dean
of Students, a position which she held until
1991 when she was once again promoted to
assistant principal. anne retired from Spellman
at the end of the 2000-2001 school year,
but she has remained active in the Spellman
community. She attends many of our annual
events, and she served as our keynote speaker
at the 48th annual Commencement in 2010.
manny munoz worked at Spellman as a
physical education instructor and served as
Varsity Football coach throughout the 1970’s.
a particular highlight of the dinner was
the introduction of our inaugural recipient of
the Cardinal Spellman alumni and Friends
golf Outing Scholarship. Sophomore student,
arnold balthazar, was selected to receive this
award which will provide $3,500 annually
(half tuition) for his next three years at
Spellman. In his thank-you speech, arnold
expressed that this tuition assistance will
allow him to continue his education at
Spellman, where he is an honor student and
a member of the lacrosse team. He promised,
“I will not let you down!”

Center, with 325 young men and women
receiving diplomas. an invocation by rev.
James O’Shaughnessy to begin the ceremony,
was followed by the National anthem performed
by Diana lindsay ’12 accompanied by the
Spellman band. Next, rev. trevor Nicholls,
president, and mr. Dan O’Keefe, principal,
took to the podium to welcome all in
attendance and to extend their congratulations
to this year’s graduates. mr. O’Keefe
encouraged the class of 2012 “to use the
energy, enthusiasm and spirit of Spellman to
make the world a better place.” He also
congratulated the faculty members who
celebrated a milestone anniversary this school
year: ms. Keane (35 years); mr. anderson ’72
and mr. Farrell (30 years); mr. Smith and

paula (Williams) madison ’70, member of
the board of trustees for Spellman, addressed
the attendees as this year’s key note speaker.
ms. madison is currently Chairman and CeO
of madison media management llC, after
serving for 22 years at NbC Universal where
she was executive Vice president of Diversity
and a Vice president of the general electric
Corporation. She told the graduates that
“excellence is what is expected, excellence
in everything that you do.” ms. madison also
announced that she is making a gift of $1
million to Spellman in honor of her parents.

of biomedical education in the fall, while

Cardinal Spellman trophy and memorial
Scholarship, given to two students who best
embody the Spirit of Francis Cardinal
Spellman was awarded to Kefah rihan and
miranda reyes. amanda butler and Jelani
Wheeler received the Spellman Spirit award,
while the Spellman alumni award was given
to Julia barnes and Kyle mena. e Seton-
DelaSalle award, named in honor of Saint
elizabeth ann Seton, founder of the Sisters
of Charity, and Saint John baptist DelaSalle,
founder of the brothers of the Christian
Schools, was presented to Stephanie Opper,
Olamide Oyede, robert biolsi, and matthew
O’Hara. also honored was the biolsi family –
robert is the 8th child in his family to graduate
from Spellman with his siblings eresa ’01,
matthew ’02, andrew ’04, timothy ’05, Nicole,
’07, Kimberly ’09, and Joseph ’11 preceding
him.
After addressing the class of 2012 as this year’s keynote speaker, Paula (Williams) Madison ’70,
looked on as the Class of 2012 received their diplomas.

Spellman goes Vertical!
Winning the “Golden Apple Award”!
Congratulations to mrs. r. piliero, mr. K. O’Donnell, and their students for winning a
“golden apple award” from the New York City Department of Sanitation! Spellman received
Honorable mention in “team Up to Clean Up” for the bronx and an award of $750.
Vertical gardens make use of limited soil space in urban areas by creating structures
using recycled materials. In a project inspired by the New York botanical garden’s vertical
gardening exhibit and the students’ ecology education, students in several biology classes
at Cardinal Spellman High School created vertical garden structures.
e students developed their designs after researching possible vertical structures that
would be conducive to the Spellman environment. ey formulated a budget, vendor list,
design, supply list, and a procedure for constructing the structures. Students involved in the
germination process collaborated with the New York botanical garden on seed germination
and soil mixtures. e germination team set up a portable greenhouse and germinated their
seeds in toilet paper tubes. ey chose this method to reduce waste. e cardboard rolls were
placed in the pots after germination was completed. e rolls will eventually
disintegrate since they are biodegradable.

Spellman Student Named “police Commissioner for a Day”
Kanisha Ffriend Wins Essay Contest
Cardinal Spellman High School
student Kanisha Ffriend won this year’s
police athletic league essay contest with her
idea to reduce youth-on-youth crime in city
schools and in the community. as the
winner of the contest, she spent the day
with police Commissioner raymond Kelly,
lunching together and going on a harbor
cruise, among other things.
“I’m very excited that I got this
opportunity to actually have a chance to
voice my opinions and voice my concerns,”
Kanisha said after taking an oath of office
and speaking before hundreds of people
at One police plaza.
Kanisha suggested a program she
calls “Youth Intending everyday to limit
Delinquency (Y.I.e.l.D.).” e program
consists of three initiatives: the NYpD would
collaborate with local businesses to institute
to achieve academically and professionally
throughout their lives.

schools and in the community,” Kanisha said
during her speech.

after 34 years at New York life, patrick
boyle, class of 1971 and a member of
Spellman’s board of trustees retired.
to mark this milestone, pat’s colleagues
at New York life donated funds to help
endow a scholarship fund in his honor.
Incorporating pat’s love of the golf game,
and his long standing support for CSHS,
this scholarship partners with e First
tee of metropolitan New York, a non-profit
educational youth development program
based at mosholu golf Course in the
bronx. e scholarship benefits students
at Cardinal Spellman High School who
are participants in programs of e First
tee. “It is a wonderful feeling to be able
to give back and help my alma mater,
especially those that do not have access
to golf. is program not only teaches
students how to play the game but
reinforces that dedication, sound values,
and education are keys to success,” stated
mr. boyle.

preperation for life by teaching me to
develop the skills and tools I would need
to meet life’s challenges. It has also given
me great memories and life-long friendships.

e annual Cardinal Spellman High
School block “S” Sports awards Dinner
recognizes the contributions of student
athletes. is year, more than 275 students
were honored. e dinner was held at the
school on Saturday, may 12th.
e evening included the induction into
the Spellman Hall of Fame of two esteemed
faculty members: ms. Jeri Faulkner, Dean of
Students and Spellman Class of 1975, and mr.
tom Cabrera, Health and physical education
teacher. ms. Faulkner has coached girls’
varsity volleyball for the past thirty years; and
mr. tom Cabrera has been head boys’ soccer
coach and assistant coach for the girls’ track
team for the past twenty-six years and has
coached boys’ varsity volleyball since 1995.
both of these inductees have acted as coaches,
teachers, role-models, and mentors to
countless students.
e presentation of the Schiazza “S” was
featured at the dinner. is award is named in
honor of the late Salvatore Schiazza, former
athletic Director, member of the board of
trustees, and alumni association moderator.
It is given to students who have received eight
or more varsity letters over their years at
Cardinal Spellman High School. is year’s
recipients were Christine Quinones, Victoria
Quinones, robert biolsi and Jurgen Kurti.
Notably, mr. and mrs. John O’Hara, parents
of John’07, timothy’08, and matthew’12, were
presented with a Schiazza “S” in honor of their
years of dedication to Cardinal Spellman’s
athletic program. John is also a graduate of
Spellman’s Class of 1978.

the Scholar-athletes of the Year, presented
to amanda butler and matthew O’Hara;
and the athletes of the Year, presented to
germain Ngaba and Victoria Quinones.
mr. Dan O’Keefe, principal of Cardinal
Spellman High School, acknowledged the
dedication of all the athletes and their coaches
and moderators. mr. O’Keefe commented
on the value of teamwork, leadership, and
determination as valuable elements of success
in later years. ms. Jane morris and mr. Fred
Opper, athletic Directors, praised athletes and
coaches for their strong sense of commitment.

e Cardinal’s Players produce
another successful show!
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, march
16th -18th, the Cardinal’s players performed
the 2012 production of FAME – e Musical.
after six months of hard work from the cast
and crew, this year’s production was truly a
success. e students performed each night
to nearly sold-out crowds in Spellman’s
1,100-person capacity auditorium.
additionally, the Cardinal Spellman
High School alumni Office welcomed 200
alumni/ae and friends back to the school for
‘alumni Night at the play,’ a wine and cheese
reception held each year prior to the Saturday
evening performance.
Congratulations to the cast and crew for
their outstanding dedication this year which
made FAME – e Musical such a huge success!

An Update from Kathleen Alexander –
the Program’s Founder
It is so exciting and humbling to see
the support for ann’s lunch box. I have
known for five years that far too many of our
students were not eating lunch. as I began to
gain their trust, I would bring them granola
bars and carry about $12.00 in singles every
day to feed students. Following the death of
my beloved friend, ann Yanni, the ann’s
lunch box program began in her honor
and the weight of the increasing numbers
of students in need, was lifted from me.
anks to members of the Class of 1983
and other wonderful alumni, faculty, staff,
administrators, family and friends, we raised
over $4,000.00 in the past year. We have a
little start up money to go into the new
2012-2013 academic year, but we still need
your help!
let me share a few stories that I think
will touch your heart as they did mine:
a mother got very ill last year and had
to go out on disability. She is putting two
of her children through Spellman. ey are
delightful, hardworking and at home they
do everything for their mother. I have been
given permission to tell you that ann’s lunch
box and the $15.00 a week each child gets
has made the difference in their being able
to stay here at Spellman.
ere are three lunch periods at
Spellman. One lunch has a large number of
students in the library. Now, I would love to
think this is all academic but I started to
“show up.” I brought in 60 granola bars
one day and made an announcement
about ann’s lunch box. ann’s daughter,
Denice Yanni, buys the granola bars
as her weekly contribution. I explained
that friends and former students of our
beloved School help us and they believe,
like I do, that lunch is essential for teens.
I am talking about protein and not
French-fries. at day all the granola bars
were gone and ann got a few new friends.
ere are a thousand stories, but the
last I will share is the generosity of two
graduates. a letter arrives in the winter.
enclosed is a check for $1,000.00. I know
we can feed three hundred and thirty three
students and I say a prayer of anksgiving
and I read the letter and smile. It is from a
family friend who asks: “are you the Kathy
alexander who grew up in Woodlawn on
239th?” He named my brother, John, and
my mom, who was his Cub Scout Den
mother. is man’s mother and father
were people I adored and treasured.

Seniors, phillip mayo (left) and Karl lattibeauidere (right)
were honored on Wall Street, this past June by WISe-Working
in Support of education. ey both scored between 95%
- 99% on the personal Financial literacy exam, placing
them in the top 4% of the nation. is exam is administered
in 23 states and taken by more than 25,000 students nationwide.
e purpose of this exam is to enlighten high school
students about financial literacy. is will enable them to
make smart, responsible financial decisions in college and
in their adult life. Notably, Cardinal Spellman High School
had a greater than 95% student passing ratio on this exam
this school year.

CSHS would like to congratulate
Yvonne (paluzzi) greenbaun on
receiving the 2011 Distinguished
teaching award from mercer County
Community College. Yvonne, was selected
for this honor by her students
and fellow colleagues. a member of
the mCCC faculty since 2003, Yvonne
is described by her students and peers
as totally dedicated to her profession.
they note that her personality and
positive attitude encourage students
to do better. Yvonne works on
statewide committees and has spoken
at conferences in Washington, trenton
and throughout New Jersey. She
works at the state level with two-and
four-year colleges to align content
and improve course transferability
and served on a committee with
Congressman rush Holt. She served
on the New Jersey Community College
big Ideas K-16 curriculum alignment
project to improve college and career
readiness.
marie (Delgado) Travis is very
excited to see all of her classmates at
their Fabulous Forty-Fifth reunion,
which will be held at the New York
athletic Club at travers Island in
pelham manor, NY on Saturday,
November 3rd from 7-11 p.m.

On march 17th many members of
the Class of 1970 joined Spellman in
marching down Fifth avenue to
honor the patron Saint of New York,
at the NYC St. patrick’s Day parade.
In all, the Class of 1970 had thirteen
marchers at the parade, including:

Spellman marches to Honor St. patrick
More than 50 Alumni/ae join the Spellman Line of March
Cardinal Spellman High School once again marched up 5th avenue in the
251st annual New York City St. patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, march
17th. is year’s parade honored the men and women of america’s armed
Forces. Under sunny skies and light winds, rev. trevor Nicholls, president,
and mr. Dan O’Keefe, principal, were joined by faculty, alumni/ae, the band,
cheerleaders, twirlers and flag corps to honor the patron Saint of Ireland and
the archdiocese of New York. large crowds greeted the Spellman marchers
as the school contingent made its way past St. patrick’s Cathedral, where
His eminence timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York viewed the
parade. most notably, Spellman was joined this year by a record number of
alumni/ae marchers, more than 50 turned out to join Spellman on this
beautiful day.
