provides an enjoyable evening
out for those who follow and
appreciate Southingtnn's well
rated local talent. Curtain time is
8:30 p.m.
Whether or not you like the
three act drama which portrays
the problems of family life in the
1920'S that for the moat part are
timeless, you will have to admit
the acting is traditionally
As each scene unfolds, it
depicts the life and problems m
A very outstanding performance
is given by Marge
a victim of wifely deprivation.
Her secrets, never before voiced,
actually help solve the marriage
situation of her sister Curs Flood
around whom the plot is bdilt.
Curs, who has developed a
persecution complex during her
17 years of marriage, is done
realistically by Theresa Emery.
Her "complex" has caused her in
devate and du'ect her affection, to
a dangerous point, to her son,
*'Sonny" to the extent he has been
labeled "a mama's boy" by his
friends
The role of Sonny is played by
Eddie Garliog, Jr - a star in the
making. It is his firs t appearance
m Community Theatre and he
carries on like an old pro.
In fact, the three young people
in the show have turned
In remarkable performances
Larry Lodovlco in the role of
Sammy Goldenbaum who makes
a tragic sacrifice because he can
not hurdle his standing in life as a
Jew and an unwanted son, gives a
notable performance as a victim
of his era
Ruinn Flood as the father and
buck.a-ms harness salesman
in his role to accept husbands as
is a good lesson in life", said
Southington High'scroas country
coach George Kloss. He was
referring to the great season hm
seven in a row, then dealt with
two crushing blows from Simbsbury
they rebounded to keep coming
on strong to chmax their season
with a Central Sectional Class L
victory last Tuesday
"'The season was a surpass for
me, I didn't expect us to go tins
far", said Klcss His team really
got it together this year and
surprised everyone. The final.
overall standings showed
Southmgton tkurd in the CVC with
a 7 - 2 record First was Slmsbury
with a 9 - 0 standing, and
second went to South Windsor
with s 8 - 1 final CVC record
Overall, Southmginn finmhed 10-
SImbsbury 12-0 this season
The biggest victory for the Blue
took the number one spot m the
Class L meet The Central
Sactlonal Championships were
Into three sectionals, each
When taking the Class L
Championship In our sectional,
Blue Kmght mate overcame such
schools as Plait, Maloney,
Torrmgton, Brmtol Central, and
In all, Sonthlngton had to
outrun IS opposing teams over
the 2 8 mile course at Southern.
The top SLX teams from each
class in each ancUonal were then
to compete m the State Champlonshlp
final run of the year
Well, gett]ng back to Saturday,
Coach Kloes said "The gays just
didn't run gc . " Thin was one of
the bltternossed he spoke of
earlier It seemed that the
Kmghts just didn't run well,
maybe it was the cold, damp
weather Nobody knows Chris
Walsh finished the best for
Southington, coming m eath out of
140 of the state's best runners
Slmsbury edged East Hartford
by one point to become the state
champs Most of the teams
finmhlag up there were from
downstate
The Southmgton Cross Country
team this season was combined
primarily of seven good runners
They were the co-captains Chris
Walsh and Bob Parker, semors
Dick Cayer and Mike McCarthy,
and Juniors Bob Gothik and Mike
Wight
One of the sU'ongest up and
comers was sophmore Tim Kane
He was followed by sophmores
Larry Jardine, Gabs Varjas, and
Joe Sepke Two other s 'ong
runners thin season were John
seemed that Injuries plagued a
good number of the teams lower
classmgn Gahe VarJas was out
leg injury. Other runners
plagued this year were Bill
Guest, with a leg injury, Jay
Janazzo, with a leg injury, and
Pete Gelpke, who was "running
on guts", as he was troubled with
sickness thLs season
Chris Waish was the first place
runner on the team, followed
closely by Bob Golmk DICk
Tim PLane and Mike Wight were
the 6th and 7th place runners If
Kane had come out for Cross
he would have probably been In
"The most important factor we
"The team is built upon
Kloss His last year team had a
record of 9-2 and finished 3rd in
the CVC But, thin year the
and grouping was more Important
Last year, '*The
not as close together", says
Kloss
Next year it looks as if Mike
will be the top runners
"If Gabe Var.las and Mike
could have a very fine sensoa
One of the top factors m the
success of thin year's team was
the fact that Chris Walsh and Bob
Golmk ran over 1,000 miles in
summer training Bob Parker
ran over 900 miles, and McCarthy
and Varlas ran over 500 miles
will be lost due to gradual;on In
The quality of productaous have been outstanding so much so that
Soutlungton Community Theatre quality us expected in every
The work and effort behind each producbon can not be measured.
The work to be done has been done despite cold quarters ior
T e idea of serving wine m hospitals has spread
from California and ObJo to New Jersey, reports an
article in the current issue of Vintage magazine.
At the John F. Kennedy Community Hospital in
Edison, New Jersey, a special rolling cart has been
made ava able to patients, offering them a side
selecaon of wlnes with their evening meals.
The idea stemmed from the hospital director's
realization that a glass of wine can bring a little cheer
to the otherwise chsmal life of a recuperating patient.
How about ft, Mr Blumenthal?
+++++
Vintage dated wine no longer is required to be made
from IO0 percent of grapes harvested in that year.
The change, announced by Mr. Rex. D. Davis, head
of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division of the
Internal evenue Service, allows up to percent of
wine from other years to be added to a bottle carrying
a wi tage date.
The change, as explained, was in response t vintners'
pleas that the old law created inefficieacies, and
caused great difficulties for them, particularly when
barrels had to be topped off during the long aging
process.
In outlining a definite approach to combating
sleeplessness, we present the following eight-step
program.
I. Look upward toward the ceiling, hard enough to
put a slight strain on your eyeballs.
2. Next, focus your eyes inward as well as upward,
as tf you were trying to look at the bridge of your nose.
Keep breathing naturally.
3 Allow your eyelids to close slowly.
4. Count backwards from ten to one, in rhythm with
your own breathing.
5. At the count of one, take a very deep breath and
let it out slowly.
6. Let your whole body go limp and loose. You are
relaxed enough if you feel that you can barely lift an
arm or leg. Enjoy this feeling for a few minutes.
7. With your eyes still closed, imagine yourself
asleep under the most pleasant and relaxed cirumstances
possfble.
8 Open your eyes and stay relaxed. The chances
are you witl go from drowsiness to a deep sleep
without even notlcmg.
We're told that this method of relaxationsuggestion
will allow most people to fall asleep
w thin three to four minutes and serves as a
preferable alternative to the risk of drug-taking that
may prove harmful or habit-forming, or to long-term
psychotherapy.
FOR HOW LONG DO MORT-
It depends on several factors
but most are from 20
longer the mortgage, the
smaller the monthly pay
WHAT ABOUT THE
That is determined by moo
apply. But, whatever the rate,
it's lower on a mortgage loan
than on any other kind of in
for example, that's the
true rate because you pay ln.
Paper Recycling Program
To Be Joint E/ ort This Year
The Conservation Commtesion,
in cooperation with the Board of
Education, is again this year
promoting a program for paper
recycling in the ten elementary
school of Southington, and also,
in the office of the Board's ad.
ministration building on Beecher
St., thanks to the spontaneous
cooperation of the office staff
there.
The program w s begun thJanuary,
1972 and in the six month
period from January to the clos.
leg of school in June, approximately
four tons of scrap paper
were sent from these schools to
the Recycling Center on Mtil St.
This represents a volume or
paper equivalent to approxi.
merely one of a 30' by 30'
clansroom-fuli which was saved
from the South ngt n
ALl scrap paper is placed in
boxes in classrooms of particle
paLing teachers, instead of in the
wRstebasket. Once a week, these
boxes are brought up by senior
students from the ecology clas.
ses at Southington High School.
This is done under the direction
of Mr. Edward Malchyk, instruct-
or. Students on the pick.up
crew this year include Campbell
Peterson, Bruce Sayward
George Fusee, Pete Gaspertnl
and Mike Aldterl.
According to Mrs. Carol Greg.
ory, Chairman of the Conserwtlon
Commtsslon's Education
Committee, "Everyone oum
cereed is learning a valtmbte
first-hand lesson concerning
vironmenta problems, and
take pride in knowing thai they
