“Changing Landscapes” exhibits open in revamped Visitor Center
Change is the underlying theme for all-new exhibits in the Wells
Reserve Visitor Center.
Four windowlit rooms of the historic farmhouse reveal alterations
in the region’s landscape at key moments in time. From the
last ice age to the arrival of the Wabanaki, from European settlement
to the industrial revolution, and from progressive agriculture
to widespread farm abandonment, visitors travel 14,000 years to
arrive at today’s protected landscape and the achievements of the
environmental movement.
The exhibits emphasize that people are an integral part of
Imparting a message of stewardship for land and water is
a primary goal for Changing Landscapes. The exhibits focus on
As you can see from this issue, the winter and early spring seasons have been very productive
for us! The long cold winter posed some site challenges, but the snow covered trees and
broad white drifts were quite lovely here. They gave us the inspiration and time to focus on
new projects and programs and plan for our busy summer season.
Much of our time was dedicated to the completion of our new Visitor Center exhibits
and the updating of the first floor in the farmhouse. How fortunate we are to have a private
donor who had the vision and provided the matching funds for this remarkable initiative that
will inspire guests for many, many years!
Our first spring event, Wells Reserve EcoDay (Healthy Planet, Healthy You) was a grand
success due in large part to the support of more than 30 new business partners. It was
particularly exciting to work with so many Maine entrepreneurs who are committed to
supporting the environment with a diverse range of green products and services and lowimpact
recreational activities. The enthusiasm and willingness of our business partners to work
with us in the future will help us continue to expand our outreach and attract new members.
The scent of lilacs and freshly cut grass wafting through our windows tells us warm
sunny weather is finally here. We are thrilled and ready—the gazebo is refurbished, the
pumpkin and corn garden is planted for fall events, new exterior building signage is in the
works, and the Visitor Center has reopened after a busy few months of preparation. The
campus is bustling again!
We thank you for your commitment and loyalty through good times and bad. You
make it all possible and we are grateful for your friendship and continual support. Check our
website for up-to-date information on what is happening at Wells Reserve at Laudholm. We
hope to see you often over the summer months. Be sure to come see the new exhibits and
be surprised by the updated Visitor Center!
education / coastal training
Saco River estuary inspires application of collaborative learning
Dr. Christine Feurt, affable coordinator of the
Wells Reserve’s Coastal Training Program,
loves bringing people together to work on
behalf of improved ecosystem health. Hers
is not an ivory-tower approach; Chris begins
by soliciting the opinions held by members
of a project’s community.
To get that conversation going, the
Coastal Training Program team (CTP) conducts
interviews with key officials and hosts
public workshops involving the people most
committed to a river: Those who use it.
“If you get people talking about what
makes the river running through their community
important to them,” Chris explains,
“they discover shared values.” Once group
members recognize they have common
concerns, they are more prepared to collaborate
on keeping what they value intact.
That’s why, when assembling a group
at the start of each new project, Chris says
she always gets “right to the values.” She has
come to recognize such frequent themes as
a river’s beauty when tides ebb and flow or
seasons change; its importance for fishing,
canoeing, and swimming; and its role in
supporting a vibrant local economy.
From Caring to Protecting
With the foundation of shared values
in place, Chris poses two key questions:
“What threatens the things that you value
and how can we work together to protect
what’s important to you?” This is where the
real work of community-based ecosystem
management starts to happen.
Participants must first acknowledge
the perceived threats, then challenge themselves
to identify strategies they can pursue
together to protect what they value. With
steady support from CTP, they find new ways
to work across municipal, organizational, and
watermark
disciplinary boundaries to form a plan of action
for protecting precious natural resources
along with a community’s quality of life. By
preparing the plan collaboratively, the group
has a collective stake in seeing the identified
actions through to completion.
Chris has described community-based
ecosystem management as “an approach
to getting things done.” It connects the collective
wisdom of people with a stake in a
sustainable future (social capital) with nature’s
ability to provide clean water, clean air, and
support for living systems (natural capital).
“This approach to ecosystem management
has been applied in a number of
communities around southern Maine,”
Chris points out. It started in 2005 when
Protecting Our Children’s Water focused
on the Merriland River, Branch Brook, and
Little River watershed. A successful pilot and
important proof of concept, Protecting Our
Children’s Water unified a group of planners,
managers, community leaders, and
scientists from three towns around a shared
vision and set of actions for their watershed.
After similar work in the Kennebunk,
Spruce Creek, and York river watersheds
refined and reinforced the collaborative
learning method, CTP embarked on a major
project with the Town of Sanford. Once
again, the integration of social and natural
sciences revealed common ground for
constituents, who not only created a conservation
plan but then incorporated it into the
town’s comprehensive plan.
Today, the Coastal Training Program
has community-based ecosystem management
efforts under way along several rivers.
One case in point: In partnership with the
University of New England (UNE), the Wells
Reserve is involved in a 5-year project to
investigate the effects of increasing coastal
spring 2011 volume 28 issue 1
development on the health of the Saco
River estuary, and to identify ways to mitigate
those effects.
Sustaining the Saco
The Saco River basin is the largest watershed
in southern Maine, draining about
1,700 square miles and encompassing all or
part of 20 cities and towns in the state. From
its headwaters in the White Mountains of
New Hampshire, Maine’s fourth-largest river
flows roughly 120 miles before emptying
into the Gulf of Maine between the cities of
Biddeford and Saco.
bolstering those efforts by collecting and
analyzing data on the fish that use salt
marshes along the tidal portion of the Saco
River. Last summer, research associates
Jacob Aman and Jeremy Miller led a team
that repeatedly sampled coastal fish using
the marsh surface, with special interest in
migratory species such as river herring, eel,
and tomcod. Their work continues in 2011.
Meanwhile Chris, the social scientist,
focuses on the people of the area and the
places where they live, work, and play. She
is also studying the gaps in scientific knowledge
that prevent certain management
If you get people talking about what makes
the river running through their community
important to them, they discover shared values.
The estuarine portion of the Saco River
extends about 4 miles, from near Cataract
Dam at Factory Island, Biddeford (the most
seaward of the river’s 40-plus dams), to
Camp Ellis and Hills Beach. At the river
mouth lies the UNE campus.
A team of UNE and Wells Reserve scientists,
along with a number of undergraduate
students from the university, is now studying
the ecology of the Saco River estuary, as
well as the policy, regulation, and economic
influences upon it.
UNE students and their professors are
approaching the project from myriad natural-science
angles — surveying fish in the
river channel, monitoring birds using the estuary
and edge habitats, assessing bacterial
counts in the water, using GIS models to see
how the river’s shoreline could change with
sea-level rise, researching the livelihoods
supported by the estuary, and learning
about salt marsh plant communities.
As a project collaborator, Wells Reserve
research director Dr. Michele Dionne is
and policy questions from being answered
during stakeholder workshops.
Over the course of the 5-year project,
stakeholders will agree upon a way to
regularly monitor and summarize the health
of the Saco River estuary. During the next
several months, the team will be considering
potential tools that might serve as a
sort of “report card” for measuring progress
toward future goals. Already, the Biddeford
Open Space Committee has committed to
using information from the project in the
city’s open space plan.
are covered for select classes at Wells and York elementary schools thanks to generous funding
from New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, Maine Community
Foundation, and Davis Conservation Foundation.
For the initial hour of Wild Friends in Wild Places programs, Center for Wildlife educators use
non-releasable rehabilitated animals to teach about native wildlife and foster the connection
between children and animals. In Mather Auditorium, students watch live mammal, reptile, and
bird wildlife ambassadors while learning about their unique behaviors, features, and needs. The
children are engaged as they see a live owl flap its wings, a turtle extend out of its shell, or an
opossum munch on a fruit snack. Presenters integrate conservation and stewardship messages,
heightening the students’ understanding of their role in wildlife protection.
Next, the children head outdoors with Wells Reserve educators, using nature journals to
explore habitats while searching for animal homes and signs. Student journals feature the animal
ambassadors and include follow-up activities for the classroom. While hiking along the trails, the
children search for suitable homes for each of the animals and create simple sketches of their
discoveries along the way. Several of the classes that visited in the winter season experienced the
trail portion of the program on snowshoes (thanks in part to a generous donation from LL Bean).
Following the visit to the Wells Reserve, teachers coordinate a stewardship project with
their students. These projects enable the classes to apply their newfound knowledge about
wildlife and habitats to their local community, while extending the educational impact of the
field trip to other community members.
Program feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One teacher reported that her
students enjoyed their visit so much that they now want to return to the Wells Reserve with
their families. Another remarked that the children “loved seeing the animals and talking about
habitats. It really matches our lessons in the classroom.” A third teacher singled out Wild Friends
in Wild Places as “one of the best experiences” she has taken kids on throughout her career.

The exhibits were designed by Main Street Design and built by Mystic Scenic Studios with
guidance from an ad hoc committee led by education associate Hannah Wilhelm.
The Changing Landscapes exhibits were funded by generous donations from Charles and
Rebecca Richardson, the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation, and Laudholm Trust, plus a
grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In planning for the new exhibits, we determined that the historic Laudholm farmhouse
would not be significantly altered. But it was also clear that something needed to be done
to improve the flow through exhibit rooms. The solution was to make a simple change: An
under-used doorway became the new
Visitor Center entrance. The necessary
short walkway and set of steps were
made out of pink granite from right
here in Wells by Millenium Granite
Quarry and Stoneworks.
The new exhibits include
touchable features like
wave-worn stones and
a paleo-Indian tool-kit,
an enclosed threedimensional
changing
landscapes
The Wild Landscape
14,000 years ago to 1400s
The story begins with the weight
of a mile-high glacier pressing
down upon what is now the Maine
coast. The end of the last Ice Age
led to colonization of the coastal
landscape by Wabanaki people.
The Economic Landscape
1600s to 1800s
Subsistence lifestyles began to fade
away as Europeans settled in the
region, bringing a market-based
approach to the landscape. The
Industrial Revolution contributed
to a decline in farming throughout
New England.
The Domesticated Landscape
1925
A “gentleman’s farm” flourishes
under unique circumstances as
Laudholm Farms embraces the
progressive farming movement,
but when the Great Depression
strikes a blow the farm never
regains its former glory.
The Protected Landscape
2010 to Present
With roots firmly planted in the
conservation movement and
strengthened by environmental
legislation, people take responsibility
for preserving and protecting
landscapes for future generations.
Post-Baccalaureate Environmental Education Fellow
“
I have no doubt that the Wells Reserve was the place
for me to be after graduating from Colby College. My first
few days were spent meeting the friendliest, happiest staff I have
ever encountered. I could tell right away that the Wells Reserve is a
place where people want and love to work and I was thrilled that I would soon feel the same.
The independent-but-guided nature of this fellowship is ideal for a student who has just graduated from college. It
truly is a learning opportunity; one is not expected to be an expert in the field of environmental education to take on this
position, so it provides a great stepping stone for a person who is passionate about the environment and who wants to
learn how to share that passion with others.
I was challenged with learning how to plan a curriculum and effectively teach students. It was very reassuring to
know that Suzanne and Ellen, and eventually Paige and Hannah, were there to bounce ideas off of and to learn from.
I have so many memories from leading camp programs—a student holding a periwinkle for the first time, getting
stuck in the muck of the mudflats along with five little campers and laughing at how muddy we got, group hugs at the
end of a week of Junior Researchers, and a blind camper who was the most inspiring of them all with her unconditional
love of nature, people, and life.
Once at the Wells Reserve, I was able to realize my potential as a teacher. I was able to see instantly that the
programs I led had a profound effect on students. I produced the best work I have ever created and my imagination,
”
horizons, and self-expectations have all been expanded.
