2009–2011 Rebecca and Charles Richardson
Post-Baccalaureate Environmental Education Fellow
“
I have no doubt that the Wells Reserve was the place
for me to be after graduating from Colby College. My first
few days were spent meeting the friendliest, happiest staff I have
ever encountered. I could tell right away that the Wells Reserve is a
place where people want and love to work and I was thrilled that I would soon feel the same.
The independent-but-guided nature of this fellowship is ideal for a student who has just graduated from college. It
truly is a learning opportunity; one is not expected to be an expert in the field of environmental education to take on this
position, so it provides a great stepping stone for a person who is passionate about the environment and who wants to
learn how to share that passion with others.
I was challenged with learning how to plan a curriculum and effectively teach students. It was very reassuring to
know that Suzanne and Ellen, and eventually Paige and Hannah, were there to bounce ideas off of and to learn from.
I have so many memories from leading camp programs—a student holding a periwinkle for the first time, getting
stuck in the muck of the mudflats along with five little campers and laughing at how muddy we got, group hugs at the
end of a week of Junior Researchers, and a blind camper who was the most inspiring of them all with her unconditional
love of nature, people, and life.
Once at the Wells Reserve, I was able to realize my potential as a teacher. I was able to see instantly that the
programs I led had a profound effect on students. I produced the best work I have ever created and my imagination,
”
horizons, and self-expectations have all been expanded.
