Another survey in Ethiopia showed that more than three quarters of working children work for more than nine hours a day and gave all the money they earned to their families (Assefa 2001;Daniel 1998) In Ethiopia there is no clear-cut policy that addresses explicitly the issues of child labor to protect children from hazardous work and exploitation, particularly in the informal sector where the exploitation of children is rampant. The issue of child labor is not yet condemned openly among the society at large (Assefa 2001). In addition, little is known about the situation of working children in the city in particular, and the country as a whole. Under the circumstances, no meaningful solutions can be proposed without adequately understanding the situations of child workers in the informal sector and the rationale behind the cause of the problem. Thus, the problem has to be analyzed within the cultural, political and socioeconomic context through empirical research. This is the purpose of the study. 1.5. Research Questions The research will answer the following questions 1. Who are the working children? 2. Why are children engaged in child labour? 3. What kind of work are they engaged in? 4. What is the situation of their working environment? 5. Is the work they are performing detrimental to their development? 6. What is the impact of their work on their schooling? 7. Who employs them and why are they employed? 7
8. Who benefits from their work? 9. How does the community, parents or guardians perceive child work? 1.6. Research Objectives General Objective Inquire into the determinants and effects of child labour in terms of its impacts on the development of children engaged in child labour in the northern part of <strong>Addis</strong> <strong>Ababa</strong> Specific Objectives Investigate on the nature and magnitude of child labour in the area Identify the reasons that pushed children to be engaged in work at an early age in the area Investigate the impact of work on the development of the child Assess the working conditions under which children are working Investigate the nature of employment and relationship with their employers Inquire the ways in which they are benefiting from the work they are performing 1.7. Significance of the Study Even though child work is a universal phenomenon, the nature of the work performed by children, their working condition and the situations that pushed them to be engaged in work at an early stage of their life varies from one society to another.
