detail, John Copley’s definitive production of this much-loved opera is traditional opera at its best. From a shabby
garret to the bustling Café Momus to a snowy courtyard at dawn, this minutely observed panorama of 1830s
Parisian life, beautifully designed by Julia Trevelyan Oman, conjures emotions and atmosphere ranging from joy
to tragedy, in large-scale crowd scenes and intimate tableaux. (Sung in Italian with English subtitles.) Running
time 2 hours and 45 minutes including two intervals. Numbers are limited to 15. Cost £15 per ticket. Website
Zulu war, the battle of Isandlwana and of course the battle of Rorke’s Drift immortalised in Cy Endfield’s classic
film Zulu. Owen has lectured widely on this and related topics to audiences including the UK Defence Academy,
Wednesday 30th January 7.30pm King’s Society talk by OKS John Man
Gateway Chamber ‘Genghis Khan: the hero and mass-murderer who re-made Asia’
Genghis is known in the West for murder and mass destruction, but Mongolia adores him as the nation’s founder
and China reveres him as a founder of a dynasty. As a leader he was a genius. He lives on today as a man whose
dreams of world rule gave much of Asia its modern boundaries. John Man is an author with a profound interest in
Inner Asia particularly the relationship between Mongolia and China. He has written extensively on this theme
and his titles include Attila the Hun, Kublai Khan and Marco Polo and Europe’s Discovery of the East. John likes
to mix history, narrative and personal experience, exploring the places he writes about. Refreshments are available
following the talk. Cost £5 per ticket. Website booking available.
Schoolroom ‘Painting from perception and its contemporary implications’
Joseph Ryan’s talk tonight will give us an insight into the world of a contemporary painter: finding a context within
the history of painting, feeding directly from the great masters and working within a somewhat marginalized method
in the midst of post-modernism and conceptual art. Joseph is the current King’s School ‘Artist in Residence’; he is
also Professor of Art and teaches at the New York Studio School, West Connecticut State University and the
Chautauqua Institute of the Arts in New York. He is represented by Galerie Mourlot in New York.
