<strong>William</strong> <strong>Kendall</strong> (<strong>tenor</strong>) <strong>was</strong> <strong>born</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>son</strong> <strong>of</strong> a <strong>naval</strong> architect. He <strong>was</strong><br />

educated at Betteshanger (now Northbourne Park) School, near Deal, and The K<strong>in</strong>g’s<br />

School, Canterbury, where he received his musical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> legendary Edred<br />

Wright. He ga<strong>in</strong>ed a Choral Scholarship to St John’s College, Cambridge, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an<br />

upper Second <strong>in</strong> Music. After a year’s fur<strong>the</strong>r study with Robert Tear at <strong>the</strong> Royal<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Music he received fur<strong>the</strong>r tuition with Sir Peter Pears and Helge Mott<br />

He made his <strong>London</strong> debut with <strong>the</strong> Bach Choir at <strong>London</strong>’s Royal Festival Hall for<br />

Sir <strong>William</strong> Walton’s 80 th Birthday Concert <strong>in</strong> 1981, and at <strong>the</strong> BBC Promenade<br />

Concerts. He has performed regularly at all <strong>the</strong> major music festivals <strong>of</strong> Europe,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g at Salzburg, Holland, Innsbruck, Vienna, Amsterdam and Madrid.<br />

He has sung at <strong>the</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh Festival four times s<strong>in</strong>ce 1993, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Glück’s<br />

“Iphigenië auf Tauris” <strong>in</strong> 2003 and Wagner’s “Die Meisters<strong>in</strong>ger von Nürnberg” <strong>in</strong><br />

2006. He returned to <strong>the</strong> Téatre Réal <strong>in</strong> Madrid for a revival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glück <strong>in</strong> 2004.<br />

<strong>William</strong> has enjoyed a long collaboration with <strong>the</strong> conductor Sir John Eliot Gard<strong>in</strong>er,<br />

for whom he has appeared <strong>in</strong> over 100 concerts and n<strong>in</strong>e record<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Gramophone Magaz<strong>in</strong>e’s “Record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year” award for <strong>the</strong> Monteverdi Choir<br />

and English Baroque Soloists’ record<strong>in</strong>g for Deutsche Grammophon <strong>of</strong> Beethoven’s<br />

“Missa Solemnis”. He received high critical acclaim for his record<strong>in</strong>g for Naxos <strong>of</strong><br />

Elgar’s “The Dream <strong>of</strong> Gerontius”, released <strong>in</strong> 1999; this <strong>was</strong> <strong>the</strong> first commercial<br />

record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work for over thirty years.<br />

Future projects <strong>in</strong>clude a return for <strong>the</strong> seventh year runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> April 2008 to s<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Passions <strong>of</strong> J. S. Bach for K<strong>in</strong>g’s College Choir, Cambridge, and <strong>the</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Ancient Music, and also a tour <strong>of</strong> France with <strong>the</strong> Orchestre Lamoureux <strong>of</strong> Paris.<br />

<strong>William</strong> has comb<strong>in</strong>ed his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career happily with that <strong>of</strong> membership <strong>of</strong><br />

W<strong>in</strong>chester Ca<strong>the</strong>dral Choir for <strong>the</strong> last 32 years. His hobbies <strong>in</strong>clude classic<br />

motorcycles, maps, torches and haute cuis<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Philip White-Jones (accompanist) <strong>was</strong> <strong>born</strong> <strong>in</strong> Liverpool where he <strong>was</strong> a chorister at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Anglican Ca<strong>the</strong>dral and a music scholar at Liverpool College. After fur<strong>the</strong>r study<br />

<strong>in</strong> piano, organ, French horn and composition at <strong>the</strong> Royal Nor<strong>the</strong>rn College <strong>of</strong><br />

Music, Philip took up <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Assistant Organist at W<strong>in</strong>chester College. From<br />

<strong>the</strong>re he moved to be Organ Scholar <strong>of</strong> Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

which time he ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Associateship and Fellowship diplomas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Organists while study<strong>in</strong>g for his bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Music. He has held<br />

<strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Assistant Organist at W<strong>in</strong>chester Ca<strong>the</strong>dral and organist <strong>of</strong> St<br />

Swith<strong>in</strong>’s School s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003<br />

He performs many organ recitals each year across <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g venues such<br />

as St John’s College, Cambridge, Liverpool Ca<strong>the</strong>dral, Liverpool Metropolitan<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>dral, Chester Ca<strong>the</strong>dral, Bath Abbey and <strong>in</strong> Gloucester as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three<br />

Choirs Festival.


He is much <strong>in</strong> demand as a cont<strong>in</strong>uo player, hav<strong>in</strong>g worked with <strong>the</strong> Waynflete<br />

S<strong>in</strong>gers, Portsmouth Festival Choir, Romsey Choral Society and Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Voices on<br />

many occasions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g performances <strong>of</strong> Bach’s B m<strong>in</strong>or Mass, Handel’s Dixit<br />

Dom<strong>in</strong>us and Mozart’s C m<strong>in</strong>or Mass.<br />

Philip also works extensively as a piano accompanist with a particular focus on vocal<br />

music. He has played Schubert’s Schwanengesang with Jimmy Holliday <strong>in</strong><br />

W<strong>in</strong>chester Ca<strong>the</strong>dral and at Warwick Arts Centre and Britten’s canticle Abraham and<br />

Isaac at <strong>the</strong> Newbury Festival with <strong>William</strong> <strong>Kendall</strong> and Tom Norr<strong>in</strong>gton, as well as<br />

frequent appearances at <strong>the</strong> Hampshire S<strong>in</strong>ger <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year competition with a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> soloists.<br />

His CD record<strong>in</strong>g work has <strong>in</strong>cluded organ accompaniment, choral direction and<br />

production with a discography focus<strong>in</strong>g on late 19 th and early 20 th century English<br />

choral music. Philip’s orchestral conduct<strong>in</strong>g engagements have <strong>in</strong>cluded Bach’s St<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w Passion and Bernste<strong>in</strong>’s Candide at <strong>the</strong> Cambridge Arts Theatre.<br />

In his spare time he enjoys f<strong>in</strong>e food and w<strong>in</strong>e, which he rout<strong>in</strong>ely comb<strong>in</strong>es with his<br />

passion for c<strong>in</strong>ema.<br />
