science does not progress by simply disregarding older views; however novel a<br />

theory, its origins always show. The most revolutionary <strong>of</strong> innovations, quantum<br />

theory, began with Planck’s attempt to patch up a flaw in classical mechanics; <strong>and</strong><br />

Newton himself did not create classical mechanics from scratch, but built on foundations<br />

laid by Galileo, Kepler, <strong>and</strong> millennia <strong>of</strong> devoted astronomers. We cannot<br />

truly appreciate the m<strong>et</strong>hods <strong>and</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> science without looking into its history,<br />

<strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the most agreeable approaches to history is through its great men,<br />

<strong>of</strong> which William Thomson, Baron <strong>Kelvin</strong> <strong>of</strong> Largs, was certainly one.<br />
