William Thomson: An Introductory Biography 13<br />

in Raymond <strong>Flood</strong>’s chapter—he can be seen as one who aimed to re-centre natural<br />

philosophy around the principle <strong>of</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> energy.<br />

Thomson had been elected a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the Royal Soci<strong>et</strong>y <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh in<br />

February 1847, but on 6 June 1851, just before his 27th birthday, his rising scientific<br />

star was recognized by his election to the more august Royal Soci<strong>et</strong>y <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

His election came on the same day as that <strong>of</strong> his lifelong friend G. G. Stokes <strong>and</strong><br />

future adversary T. H. Huxley.<br />

RSE was one <strong>of</strong> the first <strong>of</strong> over 100 learned soci<strong>et</strong>ies across the world<br />

Thomson was an inaugural member <strong>of</strong> this order <strong>and</strong> was awarded<br />

the honour on his 78th birthday.<br />
