Jiffy Forestry Tray Systems 

What are the differences?

The pellet types in each of the pictures listed below are different but several of our pellet types 

are available in all these tray sizes, such as the pellet type for example: 

Jiffy Forestry 50x150 TP40 (19 mm indent). 

The FOUR tray configurations below are different dimensions and here are how the trays are 

classified concerning their differences: 

Jiffy Air Pruning Tray 

Jiffy Air Pruning Tray does have the higher 

value, will last approximately 10 -15 years 

in use giving the most re-usability and 

therefore will have the lowest cost for the 

term use of the tray. The Air Pruning tray 

also gives the best in air pruning effect on 

the roots and therefore gives the best plant 

performance in the field. This tray is injection 

molded and is a high grade plastic. The air 

trays can be reloaded quickly using the 

transfer sheet system, and this can be 

mechanized for large use customers. The Air 

Trays are a stand-alone tray and can be supported 

easily (edges of trays or corners only) 

with any base structure such as steel supports, 

wood, conduit tubes or expanded 

metal. The Air Trays should be elevated off 

the ground at least 10 cm to achieve air 

pruning results. Customers are seeding, 

sticking cuttings and transplanting with the 

various pellet sizes in the air tray system. 

Outside tray dimensions are 38.3 cm x 

38.3 cm.

Jiffy Euro Tray 

The Jiffy Euro Tray is a thermoformed tray 

and is a lower grade plastic than the Jiffy Air 

Tray. This tray could be re-used approximately 

2-3 times depending on handling. 

This tray will have to be reloaded manually 

using bulk pellets only. The Euro Tray does 

prevent rooting between cells and there is 

air pruning at the top of the pellets and at 

the bottom of the pellets. The root system 

from the Euro Tray will be less superior to 

the root system developed in the air tray, 

but this will also be species dependent. The 

Euro Tray is also a stand-alone tray but it is 

not as strong as the Air Tray system. The 

Euro Tray can be placed directly on the 

ground if required, but I do recommend a 

shade cloth, ground cloth or weed retention 

mat under the trays to break the moisture 

barrier between the bottom of the trays and 

the direct ground. Customers will not want 

roots growing from the bottom of the cavities 

and directly into the ground. The Euro 

Trays would be best supported if using expanded 

metal benching to support the entire 

bottom of the tray and to prevent tray 

sagging. This tray works extremely well 

when sticking large diameter cuttings into 

our larger 50 mm pellets. The Euro tray is 

made only for our 50 mm pellet sizes.

1020 Tray Configuration 

The 1020 tray configuration has the pellets 

loaded into a light weight plastic insert and 

the plastic insert with pellets must be 

loaded into a 1020 heavy web flat to properly 

support the pellets vertically on the growing 

benches. The 1020 tray configuration will 

allow roots to cross over between pellets 

and in several cases depending on growing 

length; root pruning will have to be applied 

(Jiffy does sell manual root pruning devices 

for this operation). The 1020 tray can be 

placed directly on the ground if required, 

but I do recommend a shade cloth, ground 

cloth or weed retention mat under the trays 

to break the moisture barrier between the 

bottom of the trays and the direct ground. 

Customers will not want roots growing from 

the bottom of the cavities and directly into 

the ground. The 1020 trays would be best 

supported if using expanded metal benching 

to support the entire bottom of the tray 

and to prevent tray sagging. Many of our 

customers seed directly into this tray configuration 

when the pellets are dry or simply 

expand, and stick your cuttings. 

Insert sizes are 24.5 cm x 51.0 cm, so 

make sure the 1020 carrying tray inside 

bottom dimension match this size. 

1020 trays are stackable and do nest 

into each other.

Can-Am tray Configuration 

The Jiffy Can-Am tray configuration has 

the pellets loaded into a light weight plastic 

insert as well and the plastic insert with 

pellets must be loaded into the Jiffy Can-Am 

carrying tray to properly support the pellets 

vertically on the growing benches (This tray 

is known to have a 10-15 year life span 

minimum). The Can-Am tray configuration 

will allow roots to cross over between pellets 

and in several cases depending on growing 

length, root pruning will have to be applied 

(Jiffy does sell manual root pruning devices 

for this operation). The Can-Am tray can be 

placed directly on the ground if required, 

but I do recommend a shade cloth, ground 

cloth or weed retention mat under the trays 

to break the moisture barrier between the 

bottom of the trays and the direct ground. 

Customers will not want roots growing from

the ground. The Can-Am trays would be

Customers typically seed the pellets dry, 

water lightly, then place seeded inserts directly 

into the Can-Am trays. 

The insert dimensions are 34 cm x 46 

cm and two inserts fit into one Jiffy 

Can-Am tray end-to-end. Can-Am trays 

are stackable and do nest into each 

other.
