HOCKWOLD CRICKET CLUB. A VIEW FROM UNDER THE UMBERELLA. Well, I need not dwell too long on our current weather situation. Let’s hope that we get some improvement in July. We have in fact had only one rain affected match this month, where the rain put pay to our run chase, rather unfairly, against Rocklands. On the field, on Saturdays we suffered two losses in a row against Castle Acre and Fakenham. The first by 97 runs and the second by 10 runs. However, we bounced back with two great wins against Mundford, by 106 runs, and the second against Thornham by 7 runs. This puts us top of Division 2 as we near the half-way point of the season. On Sundays we managed a thrilling win over East Harling by 1 wicket. But we lost to League leaders Hardingham by 8 wickets. With our match against Rockland abandoned, we are currently third in Division 3 of MNSCL. The results for May/June so far:- Castle Acre 223-7 v Hockwold 130-10. East Harling 142-7 v Hockwold 145 -9. Fakenham 201-8 v Hockwold 191-7 Hockwold 93-10 v Hardingham 95-2. Hockwold 312-7 v Mundford 200-3. Hockwold 121-10 v Thornham 114-10. Rockland 106-10 v Hockwold 39-2. Match abandoned. The highlight of the season so far is Roy Bland’s brilliant 161 scored against Mundford. He also scored 104 against East Harling and a very solid 82 against Thornham. That said, Simon Groom has scored over 400 runs and taken 15 wickets and Adam Askew over 300 runs, while Carl Smith has scored 160 runs and taken 14 wickets. Again, it must be stressed that the whole team is showing a great fighting spirit. The new cricket pavilion is making good headway, with the roof trusses due to arrive on site the week commencing 18 th .June. Much praise must go to Roy Bland and Bert Marlow who have done sterling work in getting the exterior wall up to roof level. Home matches for July:- 1 st .July v Shipdham. 14 th .July v Narborough. 22 nd .July v Mundford. 28 th .July v Fakenham. Wednesday evening practice sessions are now underway from 5.30. Feltwell Surgery dispensary and the job of the dispenser In 1992 NHS GP’s were allowed to provide pharmaceutical services to patients in rural areas living far from chemists. Some ‘dispensing GP’s’ delegate this work to a qualified dispenser. What’s the difference between a pharmacist and a dispenser? A pharmacist has a Masters degree in Pharmacy and may dispense medication to any patient from any area who presents with a prescription. They also may sometimes make up the medicines prescribed from scratch. A dispenser, in a GP’s practice, only dispenses medication to the surgery’s own patients. There is no regulation stipulating what qualifications are needed for this job. However, Feltwell Surgery employs a qualified Dispensary Manager, Helen Kean, who’s been here for 17 years, 4 qualified dispensers and 3 qualified dispensing assistants. Each dispenser has an NVQ2 in Dispensing. A dispenser may only do things authorised by their GP. They have the right to query any prescription and can check through the GP’s clinical computer systems. They may access the British National Formulary to see if a new drug prescribed will have adverse effects on a particular patient because of other prescribed medicines or allergies. The dispenser considers the ‘whole patient’ and may call on the entire practice for advice. They may issue repeat prescriptions. However, Helen says ‘It’s the patient’s responsibility to order only what they need. We have an alert on the surgery computer system warning if a patient is ordering their repeats too early.’ Other bits of information Helen made clear were: It can take up to 48 hours to process a prescription ( there were 11,631 items dispensed in May) We try to help patients understand that the NHS hasn’t a limitless pot of money. Most patients don’t know the cost of their medication or understand how much wastage there is. Feltwell Surgery has run several campaigns to highlight difficulties with costs of drugs and the wastage of medicines (See PPG articles on our website www.feltwellsurgery.co.uk) Some patients ask if they can take their prescription to another pharmacy. This is possible but NOT on a one-off basis. Patients have to be registered as either a dispensing patient or non-dispensing patient. It’s the patient’s choice. Most patients prefer to see a GP/nurse and leave the premises with their medication at the same time – it’s like a ‘one stop service’. Many patients take the opportunity to talk about their medication with Helen. She is very friendly and approachable and she now has her own office in the dispensary to enable this service to be more private. Helen is pleased to have Liz Penny as part of the dispensing team. ‘Liz used to be our practice nurse – so we have the added benefit of someone with a qualified clinical background.’ Helen adds: ‘I really enjoy being a dispensary manager and the contact it gives me with the public. If I’m in my office patients are welcome to come and chat about their medication.’ Toni Arthur-Hay
