<strong>Forensic</strong> Science Laboratory, Junagarh for<br />
chemical analysis examination.<br />
Observations:<br />
Maximum numbers <strong>of</strong> cases were<br />
observed in age group 21 – 30 i.e. 43 cases<br />
(30.06%), followed by 38 cases (26.56%) in 11<br />
– 20 yrs & least incidence was found in 61 – 70<br />
years & 71 -80 years, i.e. 3cases (2.10%) each.<br />
(Table 1)<br />
Maximum numbers <strong>of</strong> poisoning cases<br />
were observed in Sept.2008 21 cases,<br />
(14.68%) followed by July 2008 & August-2008,<br />
17 cases (11.88%) each. Least incidence in the<br />
month <strong>of</strong> March i.e. 4 cases (Table 2)<br />
Out <strong>of</strong> 143 cases incidence was more<br />
in rural area i.e. 83 cases (58.05%) while 58<br />
cases (40.55%) from urban area. (Table 3)<br />
Incidence <strong>of</strong> poisoning cases was<br />
maximally observed in Hindu people 129 cases<br />
(90.20%) (Table 4)<br />
Maximum cases were from Nuclear<br />
family 92 cases (64.33%) as compared to joint<br />
family 48 cases (33.57%). (Table 5)<br />
Out <strong>of</strong> total 143 cases maximum<br />
persons were illiterate 75 cases (52.44%)<br />
followed by Primary 26 cases (18.18%). (Table<br />
6) Incidence was higher in married persons 90<br />
(62.93%) cases compared to unmarried<br />
persons 50 cases (34.97%). Out <strong>of</strong> 93 male<br />
cases, 59 males (41.25%) were married and 31<br />
males (21.68%) were unmarried. Out <strong>of</strong> 50<br />
females, 31 females (21.68%) were married<br />
and 19 females (13.29%) were unmarried. The<br />
male to female ratio <strong>of</strong> married person is 1.9:1<br />
while in unmarried is 1.6: 1(Table 7)<br />
Maximum cases were from lower socioeconomic<br />
class – 94 cases (65.73%) while 42<br />
cases (29.37%) from middle class and 04<br />
cases (02.80%) from upper class. (Table 8)<br />
The maximum incidence <strong>of</strong> poisoning<br />
was found in Agri cultural Labourer – 48 cases<br />
(33.56%), house wife – 25 cases (17.48%).<br />
Followed by dependent 20 cases (13.98%)<br />
followed by Business man 18 cases (12.58%).<br />
own land owner & cultivator, milkman, fruit<br />
man, etc. are included in business category.<br />

The maximum death were occurred<br />
within 1-6 hours (44.75%) while in 16 cases<br />
(11.18%) within 1- 3 days.In 13 cases (09.10%)<br />
duration <strong>of</strong> survival was within 1 hour.(Table<br />
10)<br />
The incidence <strong>of</strong> suicidal cases was<br />
higher in 103 cases (72.02%) followed by<br />
accidental cases 37 (25.88%). In 03 (02.10%)<br />
cases in was not possible to determine the<br />
manner <strong>of</strong> death. (Table 11)<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> 143 cases Viscera was<br />
preserved in 122 cases (85.31%) while in 21<br />
cases (14.69%) viscera was not preserved.<br />
(Table 12) Chemical Analysis reports were<br />
received in 98 (80.32%) cases. Out <strong>of</strong> these 98<br />
cases insecticide poison detected in 59<br />
(48.36%) cases, out <strong>of</strong> which Monocrotophos<br />
detected in 24 (19.68%) cases, Quinalphos in<br />
07 (05.73%) cases, Methyl Parathion in 06<br />
(04.91%) cases, Endosulphan in 06 (04.91%)<br />
cases, while Phoselon, Chlorpyriphos,<br />
Carbamate and Phosphamidon in 01 (00.82%)<br />
case each. Kerosene detected in 02 (01.64%)<br />
cases. Alphos detected in 23 (18.86%) cases.<br />
In 13 (10.66%) cases no poison was detected.<br />
(Table 13) In 143 cases in 39 (27.27%) cause<br />
<strong>of</strong> poisoning was unknown while in 104<br />
(72.73%) cases following were causes <strong>of</strong> fatal<br />
poisoning.<br />
Most common cause <strong>of</strong> the fatal<br />
poisoning is family problem in 40 (27.97%)<br />
cases, folloed by financial problem.In 06<br />
(04.20%) cases illness was the cause <strong>of</strong> fatal<br />
poisoning, in 03 (02.10%) cases poison was<br />
consumed after quarrel, love affair failure was<br />
the cause in 02 cases (01.40%), in 09 (06.30%)<br />
cases poisoning was due to mistake,<br />
unemployment was the cause in 01 (00.70%)<br />
case. Accidental poisoning was in 26 (18.18%)<br />
cases. (Table 14) Common place <strong>of</strong> poisoning<br />
was home in 80 (55.94%) cases, farm was in<br />
32 (22.37%) cases, outsite home in 28<br />
(19.59%) cases and at workplace in 02<br />
(01.40%) cases. (Table 15)<br />
