Le mobilier contenant Traitement comparatif Perche-Quebec, d'apres des inventaires de biens apres deces des XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles Jocelyne Mathieu Abstract lRisumj The functional typology of furniture developed from the teaching of Georges-Henri Riviere and set down by Suzanne Tardietr in her work on the subject publi.rhed in 1976 divides furniture into two major categories : "containing" furniture and "supporting" furniture . Each of these categories raises questions about their composition, with respect both to structure and to function . As an affirmation of the need of both nomadic and sedentary peoples to own their belongings, containing furniture was logically the first kind of furniture to become a part of daily life . First built horizontally, it met the many needs for multipurpose containers and accessories for persons and property . As it began to be built vertically, however, it progressively affirmed a permanence in modes of living . Content is more characteristic of containing furniture than structure, although structure determines storage capacity . Some furniture is thus distinguished by contents consisting of things made of flexible material, or of things made of rigid material, in accordance with a more or less homogeneous organization . A consideration of the structural and functional characteristics of furniture leads to an analysis of ways of life . Thus, a chest may be seen as a piece of furniture that signifies a certain mobility, whereas a wardrobe represents greater stability . Combined quantitative and qualitative factors also reveal different organizations of domestic interiors, which depend on the social environment to which the owners of the household belong . The evolution of material goods in the organization of daily life discloses the interplay of social modes, like the interplay between the hidden and the apparent . Construit.r d'abord sur un plan horizontal, ilr auraient repondu a de.r necessitis multiples de contenants polyvalents et de supports des perronne.r et des biens . Leur evolution les ayant tranrfornze.r vers un plan vertical, ilr auraient progressivement affirme une permanence des manieres d'habiter . Mais plus que par letrr structure, les nzeuble.r contenantt se caracteri.rent par leur contenu, la structure conditiqnnant les possibilites derangement . Certains nteuble.r se distinguent donc par des contenu.r d'objet.r a materialite souple, ou d'atrtres a materialiti rigide, selon une organisation plus ou moins homogene . L'addition des caractere.r de.r meubles dans leur structure et leur fonction, conduit it une analyse de.r genres de vie . Le coffre pourra ainsi se reveler un meuble significatif d'une certaine mobilite, alorr que l'armoire traduira plus de .rtabilite. Les facteurs quantitatifs et qualitatifs combines denonceront aus.ri de.r organisations differentes de.r intirieurs domestiques, .relon l'appartenance aux divers milieux de vie de.r communattte.c . Et la trame evolutive de.r biens matiriel.r dans l'organisation du quotidien montrera des jeux de modes sociales comnze celrri du cache et de l'apparent . Des interets partages entre la culture materielle et les coutumes, tant en France qu'au Quebec, nous ont conduite vers une etude comparative d'inventaires de biens apres deces de la region de Quebec et de la chatellenie de Mortagne-au-Perche, I centre primordial de recrutement pour la colonie du Canada .
