Thanks to the special appearance of Dennis Gage host of My Classic Car, the tremendous hard work of our dedicated team led by John McCoy, a packed field of magnificent motor cars, and beautiful weather, our sixteenth annual Hagley Car Show didn’t just rumble along (pun intended) – it excelled as an automobile extravaganza! I hope that you were one of the 4,432 visitors who enjoyed the show, and thank you for your very positive feedback. Library Marks Fiftieth Anniversary This year Hagley is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the library’s opening. Institutional birthdays are often occasions for reflection, and this one prompts thoughts about the relationship between the library and museum at Hagley. Many museums, such as Winterthur, keep a library to support their missions. Some libraries, such as the American Philosophical Society, feature museums. Hagley is unique in that it features two equal institutions, both with distinctive audiences, collecting missions, and heritage. In fact, the library and museum began life as two separate institutions. The Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation was established in 1952 with generous support from the DuPont Company, Lammot du Pont Copeland, Louise du Pont Crowninshield, and others, and the museum was finished in 1957. By contrast, the library began, not at Hagley, but at Longwood in 1954, when Pierre Samuel du Pont created the library to house his extensive collection of papers related to the du Pont family’s history and to make its legacy available to researchers. However, Longwood Library’s first librarian, Charles W. David from the University of Pennsylvania, had ambitions for the repository that included an aggressive collecting mission in industrial and technological history. When the collection at Longwood inevitably outgrew its home, a discussion began between Longwood Library Association officials and their counterparts at the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, leading to the creation of the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library. The ribbon cutting was held on October 7, 1961. David retired in favor of his assistant at Longwood, Richmond D. Williams. The administration of the two organizations was soon merged under the direction of foundation executive vice president Philip Kimball. Around the time Williams retired in 1987, the name was changed to Hagley Museum and Library. Hagley’s distinctive hybridity persisted in part because museum and library visitors are often different populations. Still, new technologies are likely to blur those boundaries, promote innovation, and encourage greater collaboration among the staffs of the library and museum. The library is enjoying success with its DuPont Company on the Brandywine and Delaware’s Industrial Brandywine online exhibits, while visitors to the museum can find exhibits augmented with digitized library documents available through kiosks. For half a century the library has not only been documenting American innovation, it has also been engaged in it.
