August 7—Moravian Pentecost Holy Communion
8th Sunday after Pentecost
On August 13, 1727 the Moravians
were renewed with an outpouring of
God’s Spirit. We will celebrate the
284 th anniversary of this event in
worship around the Lord’s table.
Scriptures for this Sunday are
1 Kings 19:9-18; Psalm 85:8-13; Romans 10:5-15
and Matthew 14:22-33.
August 14—Sanctuary Anniversary Lovefeast
9th Sunday after Pentecost
2nd Mile Offering
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
"Whom shall I send?
And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I.
Send me!"—Isaiah 6:8
Church worship on Sunday is not the goal of our life here on
earth. As important as praising God in worship is, we are here
to glorify God with both our lips and our lives, with our hearts and our hands. God wants
us to hear his call to us in our church and private worship and respond by saying, "Here am
I. Use me!" Then he wants us to enter the world redemptively, making a difference in our
"public worship" of ministry.
Public Worship Begins Sundays, 8 & 10:30 AM
Lovefeast to celebrate the
224 th Anniversary of our
Sanctuary, and the full payment of our
mortgage for the $2.2 million renovations
and additions of 2002. (See the next page
for more details). We have reason to
rejoice and give thanks, for great things
God did years ago, and great things God is
doing in our midst today! The 10:30
service will conclude with a
procession to the pavilion for a
ceremonial mortgage burning! Also,
both services will have a 2 nd
Mile Offering for the Power
Packs food ministry to
families in the
Warwick School District.
August 21—10th Sunday after Pentecost
“I appeal to you therefore brothers and sisters,
by the mercies of God, to present your bodies
as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to
God… (Romans 12:1) What does it mean for
Christians to be an offering to God? How do
we know? Would we know a living sacrifice
when we see one? The texts are Isaiah 51:1-6,
Psalm 138, Romans 12:1-8, and Matthew
16:13-20.
August 28—11th Sunday after Pentecost
Joyful Noise
We hear Jesus’ telling us where and how to
make this life the happiest and best it can be.
Read about it and be surprisingly shocked:
Matthew 16:21-28. Also, see these supporting
scriptures: Jeremiah 15:15-21, Romans
12:9-21. We will have a Joyful Noise Offering
for Power Packs food ministry to families in
the Warwick School District.
“Our sanctification does not depend
as much on changing our activities as
it does on doing them for God rather
than for ourselves.”
“Now our whole
debt is fully
paid…”!
(Hymn #364, Sing Alleluia, Christ Does Live)
The hymn goes on to speak of Christ saving us by
His blood. That, indeed, is reason to sing alleluia.
But if you were in worship on July 3 rd , there was
another reason shared for singing alleluia: our
church debt is fully paid! Last September, we
began a “Sprint to the Finish” to pay off our mortgage for our 2.2 million dollar addition and renovation of
2002. Then in March four members stepped up to offer matching funds to help us make that sprint.
We joyfully share now what was announced then, that as of the target date of June 30, thanks to regular
faithful giving being supplemented by extra giving and by four members who put up matching gifts, we
have reached our goal and had enough contributions to completely pay off our mortgage!
We joyfully celebrated this milestone achievement as we share with some fun and a special song, written
by Gene and Pat Hartzell, sung to the tune of “Sing Hallelujah, Praise the Lord”:
We’re proud to be Moravians and to the Lord give thanks.
We overhauled the church and went a million in the tank.
But then we ran a long campaign, in truth it was a royal pain.
But tithers helped us cash to gain, we rushed it to the bank.
We are so grateful to our congregation every one
They always ante up so now we’ll give them drink and bun.
Our God is great, he loves us so. He helped us bring in all this dough
We finally have enough to go and make our mortgage done.
Come on Sunday, August 14 for a second round of shared joy as we participate in a mortgage burning! At
both services that day we share a lovefeast commemorating the 224 th anniversary of our sanctuary. It is a
fitting occasion to also celebrate the new and improved buildings brought to us through the sacrificial gifts
of members and the grace of God! At both services we will have a time to see pictures of where we were
before, during construction and give thanks for where we are now. We will symbolically shred the
mortgage and give a shredded piece to everyone. These can then be brought, after the 10:30 service, to the
pavilion for a burning, or if you can’t come to the actual burning, your piece of the mortgage shredding
can be given to the Lord in a common basket to be taken to be burned. Come and celebrate the great thing
the Lord has enabled us to do!
And, members, be looking in your offering envelope mailing, hopefully in September, for a new envelope
to replace the now completed “Capital Campaign.” It will be an “Improvement Fund – Future Construction
Projects” envelope which will be set aside for improvements yet to be determined. If you have a dream for
possible use of these funds, talk with a board member or Rick Jackson, chair of our Facilities Use Task
Force.

Children’s Church Program
Sunday, September, 18
during the 10:30 service
Three Questions,
One Response: “I Do/We Do!”
• Do you in this faith turn away from sin, evil,
and selfishness in your thoughts, words, and
actions, and do you intend to participate actively
in Christ’s Church, serving God all the days of
your life?
• Relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, do
you promise to lead your children by prayer,
instruction, and example toward that time when
they can, by grace, confirm their faith in the Lord
Jesus Christ and commit themselves to the life
and work of the church?
• Do you receive and affirm these children of
God as members of this congregation and accept
your obligation to love and nurture them in
Christ?
Parents, sponsors and the congregation have
publicly vowed to do all we can to nurture our
children in the Lord so that they will choose to
love Him and serve Him within His community
with the hope of expanding God’s community.
Our renewed Children’s Church Program will
offer us the opportunity build new relationships,
to grow in our faith, to be the church of tomorrow
today and serve parents with young children five
to ten years old. Children’s Church will begin
September 18 with worship and meet every third
Sunday of the month. After the September
worship service, parents and children are invited
for a lunch meeting in the pavilion to explain the
program. More information to come in the next
Spire and future worship bulletins. If you want to
learn how you may support this worship
endeavor, contact Pastor Mark Breland.

CHRISTMAS
CHRISTMAS
CHILD
CHILD
August OCC Spiritual Impact Story:
The Rabulans were enjoying a quiet family breakfast in
their small tin house along the shoreline of Laguna
Lake on a Saturday morning. It was still dark outside at
6:30, and all they could hear was the ominous
pounding of rain on the roof. Maria and her husband
felt there was no cause for alarm. After all, tropical
storms are commonplace in the Philippines. Typhoon
Ketsana would most likely cause some disruption in
their lives, but they would just hunker down and ride
out the storm with their six children like they always
did. But within a few minutes, they knew that this one
would be different."While we were eating, water came
in under the door," Maria said. "It started rising very
fast in the house. After two weeks, our house was still
standing in several feet of water. We couldn't go back
there." An aunt had several abandoned pigpens that she
was offering to people who had nowhere to stay. The
pen was clean, and it would provide some shelter and
privacy, so the Rabulans said yes. The 4' x 8' concrete
holding pen became their temporary home—for how
long they didn't know. Spread out on the concrete floor
was a mat where the youngest children could stretch
out and sleep. A rack in the corner held a handful of
dishes; their clothes were stored in plastic bags, and
water jugs and miscellaneous items filled the rest of the
dwelling. A blue tarp supported by bamboo poles
served as a makeshift roof.
As Christmas approached, Samaritan's Purse wanted to
bring encouragement and reassurance of God's love to
needy families like the Rabulans. A small gift can go a
long way in restoring hope. What better way than
through Operation Christmas Child! About 150
Filipino children experienced this special blessing.
After all of the gifts had been handed out and the room
erupted into happy pandemonium, Maria joined two of
her children to see what treasures were in their boxes.
John, four, showed his mother the plastic cow
figure and sunglasses. Kristal, six, was elated
to receive school supplies and a letter from
the family in Brooklyn, New York ,who
packed her box. Maria dabbed her eyes with a
piece of cloth. "I can't afford to buy these
things for my children," she said. "They
needed these school supplies.
Thank you to the family who gave this gift."
Here are ways you can help!
August is Back to School Shopping
time. Consider picking up some of those
school supplies to put in a shoe box. Crayons,
pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, pens, tablets,
coloring books, rulers, pencil boxes,
chalk, erasers, scissors, glue sticks, and other
arts and craft supplies are great gifts to be put
in shoe boxes. Please drop off any items in
the elbow room. Please see Amy Sue Walter
or Mandy Mastros if you have any questions.
Woodchucks
The Woodchucks will be
repairing a damaged shed
roof for our August project.
This project was advertised on the Needs
Wall and will include learning how to install
roofing paper, shingles, and using tools like
hammers, knives, a circular saw, and a mitre
saw.
This may end up being a 2 day project due to
the repairs needed and because it is located
in Brownstown.
Story hour will be held in the Book Nook, which is located on the first floor of the Christian
Education Building. Children ages three to five are invited to come for an hour of stories, songs,
movement, crafts and a snack. The program is free. Groups will be limited to ten so please register
grandparents are asked to remain and participate with the children. Nursery care is available for
stories presented are Bible oriented and others are not. Each month has a theme with a Christian
message which we discuss in an age appropriate way.
Lititz Moravian Quilters
In 1856, the Ladies’ Sewing Society was organized. Over the years, the
name has changed but the purpose has remained the same. The ladies hand
stitch quilt tops made by others and use the money donated for their services
to help support charities and mission projects.
The ladies are Wilma Beard, Betty Leich, Gloria Shaeffer, Janet Birch, and
Linda Woodard. Esther Meiskey, Peg Hower, and Georgia Nuss are retired
members but still participate in quilt mounting on the frames and at other
times as needed. All that sounds very boring and stiff but the group is anything but that. We have an
emphasis on FUN. We spend a bit of time each week on devotions and we break for lunch at 11 AM,
visiting many different area restaurants, as the inspiration hits us.
If you are interested and like hand stitching, this could be the group for
you. We encourage all embroiderers, cross stitchers, and other hand
sewers to consider joining us, along with anyone interested in learning
to quilt. Please do not feel intimidated. A few of us are new quilters
and all of the members are happy to help and encourage all efforts.
We are anxious to gain more members so that the group does not
become extinct. We do not want to go the way of the dodo. The
Quilting Society has long been a Moravian tradition like the Love
Feasts and Christmas Vigils and the Trombone Choir. It would truly
be a great loss if the group were to close up shop. Consider joining us
in this worthwhile and fun endeavor.
Tuesday mornings, 9 AM to 11 AM. Please contact Wilma Beard if you need more information.
Just in...and while supplies last “twigas” from our
Adopt a Village program in Tanzania, these sweet
carved giraffes with seeds as eyes are carried to us from
the Hoffmans. Also, a new carver has sent some new
items. To benefit the building of a maternity hospital in
Tanzania we have “Global Baby Steps” hand knit
baby clothes by local Lititz Women! All proceeds go to
the project. These darling clothes must be seen to be
believed! New Grammys beware! The ministry of the
Moravian Mission at Star Mountain in Israel
inspired our Convo attendees. This ministry to disabled
children touched hearts. The beautifully embroidered
Daily Text covers are lovely, well made AND provide
encouragement for “the least of these” in a difficult
corner of the world. Litita natives Jeff and Laurie
(Marks) Smith are working with a minority group in
Southeast China. Laurie is one of the daughters of Dave
and Los Marks. As a result of this relationship through
Classic Education China we have culturally relevant
hand towels created from a traditional design of the
area. These are not the “made in China” items we have
come to resent in local markets.
Jonathan’s Kids in Kenya
At $5 each month ($60) per year enough has been received so
far to feed 50 of the original goal set at 70 children. In faith, the
Jonathan’s Kids sub-group of the Lititz Moravian Mission Task
Force has “paid it forward” so that all 70 children have been fed
thus far. All who have donated and will donate will receive in
gratitude either Instant Chai or tasty soup packaged as a
memento of this ministry.
Food Bank
During the school year, many children rely
on school breakfasts and lunches. When
school ends, their nutritional needs
continue and cupboards at home can
become bare quickly. Families that are
under pressure to make ends meet often face a difficult
challenge to provide nutritious meals for their children. These
hungry children often suffer from malnutrition and their
nutritional deficiencies can lead to serious health and
developmental problems. Your generosity will provide
nutritious food for children living in our
neighborhoods, and provide them with the
nourishment they need to remain healthy.
The collection box for the Lancaster County
Council of Churches is located in the Elbow
Room. Please look at the list of needed
items on the right and help make sure we
feed the bodies and souls of our community
to express God’s love through us.
