<strong>The</strong> children will respond to <strong>the</strong> characters in <strong>the</strong> story by choosing one to represent pictorially.<br />
Method<br />
Children use <strong>the</strong>ir imagination to create an image of a character from <strong>the</strong> story.<br />
• Re-tell <strong>the</strong> story of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Elves</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shoemakers</strong>.<br />
• Ask <strong>the</strong> children to list <strong>the</strong> characters who take part in <strong>the</strong> story. Write <strong>the</strong> list on <strong>the</strong> whiteboard.<br />
We don’t know <strong>the</strong>ir names, but we could make some up.<br />
• Ask <strong>the</strong> children which is <strong>the</strong>ir favourite character. Encourage <strong>the</strong> children to share <strong>the</strong>ir ideas <strong>and</strong><br />
listen to o<strong>the</strong>rs’ ideas.<br />
• Ask <strong>the</strong> children what <strong>the</strong>y think <strong>the</strong>ir favourite character looks like, what clo<strong>the</strong>s does s/he wear?<br />
Encourage <strong>the</strong> children to share <strong>the</strong>ir ideas <strong>and</strong> listen to o<strong>the</strong>rs’ ideas.<br />
• Ask <strong>the</strong> children to draw a picture of <strong>the</strong>ir favourite character from <strong>the</strong> story, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n to write a<br />
sentence underneath saying who <strong>the</strong>ir character is <strong>and</strong> what <strong>the</strong>y like about <strong>the</strong> character.<br />
Use additional adults to note children’s ideas where writing is pre-emergent or needs mediating.<br />
Rogues gallery: Children volunteer to talk about <strong>the</strong> character in <strong>the</strong>ir picture.<br />
Follow up<br />
<strong>Resource</strong>s required - shoe templates, sticky back paper, metallic papers, glitter. Ask <strong>the</strong> children to<br />
decorate a pair of Christmas shoes for <strong>the</strong>ir character. <strong>The</strong>y could be hung on <strong>the</strong> class Christmas tree.<br />
Success criteria<br />
Children used <strong>the</strong>ir imaginations to visualise <strong>and</strong> create images of characters from <strong>the</strong> story<br />
using media for drawing.<br />
