He absta<strong>in</strong>s from wear<strong>in</strong>g, adorn<strong>in</strong>g, or ornament<strong>in</strong>g himself with garl<strong>and</strong>s,<br />
scents, <strong>and</strong> unguents.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from the use of the large <strong>and</strong> lofty beds.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from accept<strong>in</strong>g silver or gold.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from accept<strong>in</strong>g uncooked gra<strong>in</strong>.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from accept<strong>in</strong>g raw meat.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from accept<strong>in</strong>g women or girls.<br />

He absta<strong>in</strong>s from cheat<strong>in</strong>g with scales or bronzes or measures.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from the crooked ways of bribery, cheat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> fraud.<br />
He absta<strong>in</strong>s from maim<strong>in</strong>g, murder, putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bonds, highway<br />
robbery, dacoity, <strong>and</strong> violence."<br />
Such are the th<strong>in</strong>gs, brethren, which an unconverted man, when speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
praise of the Tathagata might say. '<br />
Here ends the Kula Sila (the Short Paragraphs on Conduct).<br />
II. Or he might say: "Whereas some recluses <strong>and</strong> Brahmans, while liv<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
food provided by the faithful, cont<strong>in</strong>ue addicted to the <strong>in</strong>jury of seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g plants whether propagated from roots or cutt<strong>in</strong>gs or jo<strong>in</strong>ts or budd<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
or seeds—Gotarna the recluse holds aloof from such <strong>in</strong>jury to seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g plants. "<br />
12. Or he might say: "Whereas some recluses <strong>and</strong> Brahmans, while liv<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
food provided by the faithful, cont<strong>in</strong>ue addicted to the use of the th<strong>in</strong>gs stored<br />
up; stores, to wit, of foods, dr<strong>in</strong>ks, cloth<strong>in</strong>g, equipages, bedd<strong>in</strong>g, perfumes, <strong>and</strong><br />
curry-stuffs—Gotama the recluse holds aloof from such use of th<strong>in</strong>gs stored up."<br />
13. Or he might say: "Whereas some recluses <strong>and</strong> Brahmans, while liv<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
food provided by the faithful, cont<strong>in</strong>ue addicted to visit<strong>in</strong>g shows ; that is to say,
