A Shrotriya Brahm<strong>in</strong> was supposed not to keep with him a store of provision<br />
last<strong>in</strong>g for more than a week. But they had systematically trampled upon this rule<br />
<strong>and</strong> were addicted to the use of the th<strong>in</strong>gs stored up ; stores, to wit, of foods,<br />
dr<strong>in</strong>ks, cloth<strong>in</strong>g, equipages, bedd<strong>in</strong>g, perfumes, <strong>and</strong> curry-stuffs. The Brahm<strong>in</strong>s<br />
were addicted to visit<strong>in</strong>g shows such as :—<br />
(1) Nautch dances (nakkam).<br />
(2) S<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>gs of songs (gitam).<br />
(3) Instrumental music (vaditam).<br />
(4) Shows at fairs (pekham).<br />
(5) Ballads recitations (akkhanam).<br />
(6) H<strong>and</strong> music (panisaram).<br />
(7) The chant<strong>in</strong>g of bards (vetals).<br />
(8) Tam-tam play<strong>in</strong>g (kumbhathunam).<br />
(9) Fair scenes (sobhanagarkam).<br />
(10) Acrobatic feats by K<strong>and</strong>alas (K<strong>and</strong>ala-vamsa-dhopanam).<br />
(11) Combats of elephants, horses, buffaloes, bulls, goats, rams,<br />
cocks <strong>and</strong> quails.<br />
(12) Bouts at quarter staff, box<strong>in</strong>g, wrestl<strong>in</strong>g. (13-16) Sham-fights, roll-calls,<br />
manoeuvres, reviews.<br />
They were addicted to games <strong>and</strong> recreations; that is to say,<br />
(1) Games on boards with eight, or with ten rows of squares.<br />
(2) The same games played by imag<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g such boards <strong>in</strong> the air.<br />
(3) Keep<strong>in</strong>g go<strong>in</strong>g over diagrams drawn on the ground so that one-steps only<br />
where one ought to go.<br />
(4) Either remov<strong>in</strong>g the pieces or men from a help with one's nail, or putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
them <strong>in</strong>to a heap, <strong>in</strong> each case without shak<strong>in</strong>g it. He who shakes the heap,<br />
loses.<br />
(5) Throw<strong>in</strong>g dice.<br />
(6) Hitt<strong>in</strong>g a short stick with a long one.<br />
(7) Dipp<strong>in</strong>g the h<strong>and</strong> with the f<strong>in</strong>gers stretched out <strong>in</strong> lac, or red dye, or flour<br />
water, <strong>and</strong> strik<strong>in</strong>g the wet h<strong>and</strong> on the ground or on a wall, call<strong>in</strong>g out `what<br />
shall it be?' <strong>and</strong> show<strong>in</strong>g the form required—elephants, horses .<br />
(8) Games with balls.<br />
(9) Blow<strong>in</strong>g through toy pipes made of leaves.<br />
(10) Plough<strong>in</strong>g with toy ploughs.<br />
(11) Turn<strong>in</strong>g summersaults.<br />
(12) Play<strong>in</strong>g with toy w<strong>in</strong>dmills made of palm leaves.
