SHIH SHUI KUNG
“A journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath one’s
feet.” -Lao Tzu
Why am I talking about this
again? The reason is that I have
been doing Shih Shui Kung
(pronounced she-sway) since
1977 and I feel I am stronger,
younger, and healthier at 69
than I have ever been. It seems
the older I get, the stronger &
healthier I become. I wish
every man and woman could
feel this feeling of youth coming
back into their life. I once
wrote an article years ago that I
felt Shih Shui could be the
fountain of youth for many
and I truly do believe this.
There has been little research
on the benefits of Shih Shui
and I think the findings would
be very interesting and overwhelming.
A couple of years ago, I taught
Shih Shui to a medical doctor
in the Chicago area and he said
to me, “Lao Tzu, I don’t think
you really realize how fantastic
Shih Shui really is or what it
can really cure or what it can
prevent people from getting
like different diseases or an
illness.” The answer is we
really don’t know. Of all the
many times I have taught Shih
Shui whether it is to a woman
or a man, they have always
raved how good they feel while
doing it. The thing I do not
understand is why many of
them quit because they say
they do not have time to practice.
To me, it is as if they
don’t care about their body or
their health. Then when I see
them some time later, they all
say I should get back to it as I
really felt good while doing it.
We go to various health clubs
to tone our external bodies so
we can look good, but seldom
do we give a thought about
toning our internal organs.
Bodybuilders, both men and
women, strengthen every part
of their bodies except the most
important muscle/organ. The
one they have the most fun
with, the one that is most useful,
the muscle/organ that is
keeping us healthy, happy, and
strong and that is their sexual
organs. Why is this? The Shih
Shui exercise is the most powerful
exercise there is that does
this and more and is very simple
to do, if taught correctly.
Most importantly, it is natural
with no side effects. Shih-Shui
works directly on the inner
core of the body that are often
neglected or ignored completely.
Shih-Shui is a holistic
discipline that can help the
practitioner to attain elevated
functioning and harmony of the
body and mind like never before.
Benefits are usually felt
within the first three weeks of
training.
Where Did Shih Shui
Originate
The origins of Shih-Shui can
be traced back to the time of
the Tang Dynasty (618-906).
The Taoist Wu Dao Zi, while
adhering to the theories of
Huang-Ti's nine chamber scriptures,
blended the static and
kinetic self-defense functions
of the birds, animals, insects,
and fish into one system. He
established a school of boxing
and swordsmanship that comprised
the skills of wrestling,
striking, seizing, and kicking
along with the skills of controlling
chi and preserving the
spirit through the cultivation of
bone marrow washing. This
school was named Little Nine
Heaven Wu Tao. The students
of this school were used to
guard the temples of the Taoist
priests. This is actually the origin
of the present day Little
Nine Heaven Wu Tao system.
Honorable Great Grandmaster Lushan
Daoren was the 32nd generation master.
Grandmaster Chiao Chang-Hung was
the 33rd generation master of this great
system which is one of the oldest Taoist
system known today.
It consists of three skills: ju kung (nine
chamber fist), chian kuan jen
(swordsmanship); and Shih Shui Kung
(bone marrow washing). In skill, it is
based on the Taoist practice of the balancing
between yin and yang to relax
the tendons and bones and to perform
marrow washing. It is actually an exclusive
literature and a rich inheritance
passed down through the centuries by
word of mouth. This is a Taoist system,
not a Buddhist system or Shaolin system
as some people claim.
In the late 1700s, Lushan Daoren established
a new Little Nine Heaven temple
on Yi Wu Lu Mountain in northeastern
China. He was believed to have been
over 150 years of age. Over the years
during the early 1900s, Lushan Daoren
taught the complete system to young
Chiao. Both masters have mastered the
highest level of Little Nine Heaven Wu
Tao system consisting of meditation,
levitation, mind travel, healing and
fighting. Years later with the Communist
take-over of the Mainland China,
he immigrated to Taiwan and started
teaching Hsing-I, Pa-Kua, and Little
Nine Heaven Wu Tao. The Honorable
Grandmaster Chiao Chang-Hung became
a living legend in the martial art
world of today for his many incredible
skills. James McNeil is Grandmaster
Chiao’s only American student.
In 1984, he received the highest honor
any man could receive. That was the
Little Nine Heaven sword, which signified
James McNeil is an official Little
Nine Heaven Wu Tao indoor student of
Grandmaster Chiao Chang-Hung.
Every year McNeil would visit Master
Chiao in Taiwan and many time Master
Chiao would stay at McNeil house in
California and teach him.
What Is Shih Shui?
Shih Shui, also known as “Bone Marrow
Washing,” is a component of the
ancient Taoist Little Nine Heaven system
which originated in China almost
2000 years ago. Shih Shui is the most
powerful form of chi-kung/nei-kung
there is and focuses on strengthening
the internal body, increasing sexual
energy with the goal to optimize and
preserve the health of the body, mind,
and spirit. It consists primarily of a series
of special breathing and strengthening
exercises along with specific energy
circulation techniques.
Traditionally, there are three different
goals for learning the Shih Shui Kung
training. The first is health and longevity.
The second is to improve kung fu
abilities and the third is enlightenment.
There are four stages in the third goal to
reach enlightenment (1) Converting
Ching to Chi (2) Converting Chi to
Shen (3) Refining Shen to emptiness,
(4) Converting emptiness to the child.
This holy fetus possesses the highest
wisdom in the psychic and spiritual
world. The main requirements to
achieve such a state are patience, perseverance,
and a good teacher.
Many people who learn Shih Shui Kung
are only looking for the first two goals
which truly have many health benefits
that are more powerful than they can
ever imagine but most people ignore the
final stage.
Chi kung exercises had been taught for
thousands of years and have been
taught openly to everyone. But Shih
Shui masters have gone to great lengths
to preserve its secrecy. Many of the secrets
of Shih Shui are taught only by
word of mouth to the student whom the
master feels is worthy. Many Chinese
chi kung practitioners have read Grandmaster
Chiao book on Shih Shui and
claim they now know the system and
teach it the way they interpreted it
Some have even written their own
books. But the true secrets of Shih Shui
are only translated orally and will never
be written in a book.
Shih-Shui can be practiced alongside,
and will enhance, any other discipline.
Any adult man or woman can learn and
gain the benefits of Shih Shui.
What are the Health Benefits of
Practicing Shih-Shui?
Shih-Shui promotes feelings of youthfulness
and clearer, sharper thinking. A
robust immune system, strong bones,
and supple ligaments are among the
results of regular practice. Shih-Shui
will build up testosterone levels, prevent
premature ejaculation, strengthen
the immune system, purify the bone
marrow, increase bone density, and
strengthen the prostate gland to prevent
problems with that organ which have
become such a major concern for men’s
health in the past few years. For a man,
it will increase the blood supply to his
penis which will keep an erection
stronger even well into his senior years.
Shih-Shui can provide these and many
more benefits that address a variety of
health issues that have a direct correlation
to aging and diseases associated
with aging.
For a woman, these same exercises will
strengthen and tighten the vaginal muscles
which can greatly enhance her sexual
pleasure.

Volume 4, Issue 7
It will also have the effect of putting
energy into the ovaries and vagina,
making her arousal and orgasm easier
to achieve. Shih Shui can also help a
woman build up the estrogen levels in
her body and will increase bone density.
This training can prevent vaginal
prolapse, the condition in which pelvic
organs such as the uterus, small bowel,
bladder, urethra, and sometimes the
vagina wall itself begins to protrude
through the vagina. Often, with traditional
medicine, major surgical procedures
such as a hysterectomy are required
to alleviate these serious conditions.
Yet through the practice of Shih-
Shui, many women may find that these
radical treatments can be eliminated.
The Power of the Mind and Shih
Shui
We all possess internal medicine
within our body, so why not use it?
Everyone wants to live a healthier, happier,
and longer life without illness, but
it seems for many that an hour a day
takes too much time out of their lives
for good health and happiness. I will
continue to try my best to help people
understand the true value of using the
medicine within our own bodies with
the power of the mind and the power of
Shih Shui, I feel we can cure or prevent
anything.
Wow, I've not had to sit and write anything since high school. This is as mind boggling to my head as learning pao chui in two
days.
To my friends that I have not met yet, my name is Ethan Kane. I am 31 years old and for most of my life have lived in the sub-
urbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In my childhood I would often go into the city to Chinatown to get Kung fu movies and instruc-
tional videos. One day something caught my eye and I was drawn to a rack with Sifu McNeil’s Eight Section Brocade Tape. I had
never heard of Eight Section before this and did not know what to expect, but was curious. When I got home and watched the
tape, I was very excited by what I saw and wanted to share it with my brother, Colin. He too was enthusiastic about it and later
went out to meet Sifu. With his recommendation I then traveled to Rainbow in Spring 2003. I studied Chen Tai Chi and Iron Hand
with Sifu in Rainbow.
Many of you may have met or know Colin, and some of you have met my sister, Beth, who is also now part of L9H. I grew up in a
large family of 3 brothers and 5 sisters. I have a daughter named Victoria who is coming up on her first birthday. She has been
the greatest in all my life lessons. I also have a lovely and beautiful girlfriend named Jenifer. Simply put, it is my friends and fam-
ily that motivate and give me happiness. That is what I found being a part of the Little Nine Heaven school has done for me. I am
extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to go out to Rainbow and gained more friends and family, all with beautiful hearts
and life stories to share.
In Pennsylvania, I lived on a farm in Kimberton and ran a yogurt processing plant, called Seven Stars Farm, for six years. I
learned a lot about myself, specifically that I work best when I am challenged or am faced with a problem. I also noticed I am quite
calm in these situations. Kung fu challenges me. The level of my kung-fu has only scratched the surface of its and my own feel-
ing but it leaves me constantly challenged. I’ve learned a few forms but it is the little lessons in those forms that I hear Sifu talk
about or try to express that have benefited me the most in my practice and in my everyday life. Often it will make no sense to me
at the time, but I will hear the words months later in my head when doing a form over again and again. The lesson might not even
be about the form we are learning. Sifu is a much better teacher than I am student. I am honored to even know him and blessed
to have him in my life. The harder I train and follow his lessons the easier and clearer life gets. I fully trust him and even in my
immaturity he makes me feel comfortable.
To me everything we do is kung fu. I pretty much turn anything I’m doing into a chi gong or kung fu exercise throughout my day. I
mentioned the yogurt farm I worked at; well, one of the monotonous jobs I did there was to box yogurt. It was a simple task of
picking up yogurt, turning and putting it into a box. The box held six, and I started out only able to carry two. It was then that I
created the “six quart fist”. The task initially took four hours; I turned it into a two-hour chi gong exercise.
Over the years we’ve had several seminars in Pennsylvania and it has been wonderful to have Sifu come out here and to be able
to train with so many of my kung fu brothers and sisters. We always have a great time together whether it be training or just being
in each other’s presence.
I am rather quiet and like to be simple with my words. I’d like to thank you all for sitting here with me. Hopefully someday we will
all get to know each other better. Many blessings to everyone -- may the long summer days bring brightness to all of your lives.
