Harrison Memorial Hospital to open Walmart Clinic in late August
Harrison Memorial Hospital‟s new in-store clinic will expand access to basic
healthcare services. HMH has moved one step further toward providing seamless health
care within the community by opening The Clinic at Walmart. The walk-in clinic, which
is operated by the professionals at HMH will provide basic healthcare services seven
days a week, with no appointment necessary. The walk-in health clinic is the first-owned
and operated by HMH in a Walmart location. The Clinic staff will see patients, beginning
in late August, Monday through Friday from 11:00 am. until 9:00 pm., Saturday
from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm & Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
“Our mission is to serve this community, and this clinic is one more way we're able to
fulfill our mission. By joining Walmart to operate „The Clinic at Walmart,‟ Harrison
Memorial Hospital is again improving access to health care,” said Sheila Currans, HMH
Chief Executive Officer. “This clinic will be staffed with licensed healthcare providers,
even on evenings and weekends, so families can walk in and know they will receive
quality care. This will be a particularly attractive healthcare option for busy people after
working hours or on weekends who need to be seen for common ailments or to receive
routine healthcare services,” said Currans.
Healthcare providers at the Clinic will treat patients for things such as upper respiratory
infections, sinus infections, minor wounds, ear aches, flu, insect bites and stings, bladder
infections, acne, wart removal, earwax removal and more. Routine screenings for cholesterol
and blood sugar, common vaccinations and pre-employment and camp/school
physicals will also be provided.
We at The City Buzz Magazine believe that your access to this new service is a good
thing for our community. It will help relieve pressure on emergency room visits at the
hospital thus allowing emergency personnel to treat more acute illness with better speed.
This should also help in bringing additional out of town patrons, not only to Walmart,
but to investigate other businesses in the Cynthiana area as well.
The 50th Anniversary......
A couple were celebrating 50 years together.. Their three kids, all very successful,
agreed to a Sunday dinner in their honor.
"Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad," gushed son number one ..... 'Sorry I'm
running late. I had an emergency at the hospital with a patient, you know how it
is, and I didn't have time to get you a gift."
"Not to worry," said the father. "The important thing is that we're all together
today."
Son number two arrived and announced, "You and Mom look great, Dad. I just
flew in from Los Angeles between depositions and didn't have time to shop for
you."
"It's nothing," said the father. "We're glad you were able to come."
Just then the daughter arrived. "Hello and happy anniversary! I'm sorry, but
my boss is sending me out of town and I was really busy packing so I didn't have
time to get you anything."
After they had finished dessert, the father said, "There's something your
mother and I have wanted to tell you for a long time. You see, we were very
poor. Despite this, we were able to send each of you to college. Throughout the
years your mother and I knew that we loved each other very much, but we just
never found the time to get married."
The three children gasped and all said, "You mean we're bastards?"
…."Yep," said the father. "And cheap ones too."
Expecting at 71
A woman went to the doctor's office where she was seen by one of the
younger doctors. After about four minutes in the examination room, she burst
out screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked
what the problem was, and she told him her story.
After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor
marched down the hallway back to where the young doctor was writing
on his clipboard.
"What the heck is the matter with you?!" the older doctor demanded. " Mrs.
Terry is 71 years old, has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and
you told her she was pregnant?" The younger doctor continued writing and
without looking up said, " Does she still have the hiccups?"
Local Retail Icon (Whalen Jewelers) Changes Owners
Steve Ewalt is the new owner of
On July 1, a chapter in the history of
Whalen Jeweler's was closed as the business
was sold to Steve Ewalt. The business,
founded by Russell Whalen, was
started in October, 1947 after Whalen attended
watchmaker's school in Denver,
Colorado. Having very little jewelry to sell
in the beginning, Russell and his wife,
Lillian, ran the business as a Mom and Pop
organization.
Originally located on Walnut St, with the post office just across the street, the gas
company a few doors down, the AA Chambers just next door, and Thompson Motor
nearby, they were in a prime business location. Whalen Jewelers remained on Walnut
for 4 years and with an increase in business expanded to Pike Street in 1951. After
moving to Pike Street, Whalen was able to increase inventory carrying products from
all the major watch and silver companies and diamond importers - many companies
with which they still maintain strong business relationships today. In 1957 Whalen's
moved to their current location at 136 S. Main Street.
Whalen prides himself in selling the best quality at the lowest price of any jewelry
company. "I have people say to me I bought this from your store 40 years ago. Our
motto has always been, if you don't know jewelry, know your jeweler. And with the
best quality and the lowest prices it made it all possible."
So why sell the business? "I have been asked several times. First, my age has a little
to do with it. Second, Steve's a local guy and I know he'll continue the business with
new ideas in the same tradition - best quality, and honest, knowledgeable service."
Whalen will continue to be associated with the business as he will continue to work
in watch repair as well as helping Steve get grounded. Marjorie Taylor, Russell's
daughter who has also been an important business partner, will continue to manage and
assist in business affairs. New member, Susan Hampton, joins the sales team along
with the part-time help of Joyce Courtney.
Business hours will remain Monday-Friday from 9:30 - 5 p.m. Additional hours will
now include Saturdays from 9:30 - 3 p.m. As always, they will continue to sell the finest
quality in stones and fine gold, as well as crystal from Lenox and Gorham. They
will also continue to provide diamond setting, jewelry repair (prong replacement, ring
sizing, chain repair), watch repair, and appraisals, as well as custom jewelry making.
Right now, Steve will be in the store on Friday and Saturday, so stop in and meet the
new owner, and come visit your old friends. Thank you for you continued patronage,
Will the Southeastern Conference Expand?
There has recently been speculation on ESPN news that Texas
A&M will be joining the SEC ranks in the next sports season
(2012). Other team under consideration were Florida State and Virginia
Tech. That rumor was put to rest on Sunday Aug. 14 when it was
announced that SEC commissioners nixed the idea for the time being, at least until they
could investigate the possibly of adding 4 more teams to the league. Texas A&M announced
Monday that they were officially leaving the Big 12. Welcome to the SEC...
SPORTS
UK suddenly in the running for # 1 center in 2012 class
ESPNU‟s top pick for Center in 2012, Andre Drummond narrows it to five schools.
Drummond is rated by ESPN‟s top 100 as the No. 2 overall pick for the class of 2012.
Wednesday the 6-foot-10 center announced Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgetown
or West Virginia as his current choices for playing Division 1 Basketball. Andre
stated to ESPN‟s Adam Finkelstein, "I have great respect for those coaching staffs. They
all have a chance to compete for a national championship, and they are committed to
preparing their players for the next level."
Finkelstein wrote this on August 10, Although some have theorized that by remaining
in the class of 2012, Drummond is essentially stating his intention to go straight into
next June's NBA draft, the big man said that is far from a foregone conclusion. He would
be allowed to do so because he would be one year removed from his graduating class, as
required by the league's recently expired collective bargaining agreement.
"It's definitely an option but far from a done deal," Drummond said. "I'm open, but
I'm not going to be making any decisions before spring 2012 either way. I don't think I'll
have too much to say about it until then. Most people have been really great about respecting
my privacy throughout this process and I really appreciate that." Come on
' ASK YOUR OWN LAWYER '
Notice; This column is not to be considered as any legal advice, always ask your own lawyer when you need legal advice.
The stories depicted in this column are commonsensical in approach and are intended for purely entertainment purposes.
Question: Several years ago after some marital and legal trouble, we signed a POA document
with Grandma for the care of our children. At the time of signing she attached some kind of
“termination criteria”. Things have vastly improved since then with my husband and our kids. We
have met all of those agreements except, I haven‟t been able to obtain my drivers license and
based on this, she is refusing to return our kids. Does the “Termination Criteria” trump my ability
to revoke the POA and can she use the POA to file for custody under abandonment without our
knowledge? She has been caring for the kids for more than 2 years. The POA form was a legal
document purchased online, but the termination criteria was hand typed by Grandma and was notarized,
she used her POA and signed for us.‟
Answer: You need to speak with a good family law attorney immediately, one in the state
where your mother-in-law lives. It is stupid, to say the least, for someone to give their children to
someone else, along with a document they purchased online. Come on people, aren‟t you smarter
than that. Obviously she has an issue with you both being good parents? I don‟t know why or
where you hid for 2 years, but I suspect one or both of you were in prison. ….Any way, here we
go. It is not at all unusual for a grandparent to attempt to keep control of their grandchildren if
they feel they can do a better job at raising them than the parents. Unfortunately, this is the outcome
when you try to resort to cheap, do-it-yourself measures when your children‟s well being is
at stake, and by consulting a free online website, instead of an attorney. Now you are doing it
again. These are your children, so grow up and hire an attorney.
SISTER SUZZETTE’S RECIPE CORNER
Amish Friendship Bread
Give your friends a sample taste and some starter that made it! Your friends can
make their own and pass it along . This is why the bread is called "friendship bread".
Bread Starter Recipe: Special Note/ It is very important to use plastic or
wooden utensils & plastic or glass containers, Do not use metal, it kills the yeast!
[ 1 pkg. active dry yeast, 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F), 1 cup all-purpose
flour, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F)
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well.
2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar.
Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk.
3. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture
with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the
cycle, (or if given starter from a friend, the day you receive the starter is Day 1).
For the next 10 days handle starter according to the instructions below.
Day 1 - receive the starter Day 2 - stir Day 3 - stir Day 4 - stir Day 5 - Add 1 cup
of each flour, sugar and milk. Day 6 - stir Day 7 - stir Day 8 - stir Day 9 - stir
Day 10 - Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Divide into 4 containers, with
1 cup each for three of your friends and 1 cup for your own loaves. Give friends the
instructions for Day 1 through Day 10 and the following recipe for baking the bread.
Now, combine your starter in a large bowl with the following ingredients:
[ 2/3 cup oil, 3 eggs, 1/2 tsp. Salt, 1 tsp. Vanilla, 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon, 1
cup sugar, 2 cups flour, 1-1/4 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda ]
Using a fork beat by hand until well blended. You can add 1 cup raisins and 1 cup
nuts (optional). Grease two loaf pans with butter, sprinkle with sugar instead of flour.
Bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes to 1 hour (individual oven temperatures vary).
Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans. Makes two loaves.
Green Tomato Pie
Crust: [ 2 cups self rising flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon sugar, 3/4 cups of
shortening- butter flavored, 1/2 cups cold water ]
Sift together flour and salt into a bowl. Cut shortening into flour mixture with fork
until resembles cornmeal. Stir in 1/4 cup of cold water, then add remaining 1/4 cup
and mix until combined. Cover dough and allow it to rest in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Divide dough in half. Place on a lightly floured board and add more flour, and
knead until the dough comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll out 1 piece of dough
to the size of a 9'' pie pan. Put crust in pan and trim off excess dough around the edge.
Roll out the second ball of dough for pie crust top.
Filling: [ 5-6 green tomato's, chopped, 2 tablespoons of cider vinegar, 1-1/2 cups
of white sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon
ground cloves, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup flour ]
Preheat oven to 350*. Place tomatoes and vinegar in a large bowl. In a medium
bowl mix together sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour. Sprinkle over tomatoes
and toss to coat evenly. Pour into crust and cover with criss-cross lattice crust. Bake
at 350* for 35-45 minutes, until bubbly and crust is brown.
―This Old House is Still Standing‖
by Mary Riggs LeBus
This Week: Waveland
Our ongoing summer tour of Kentucky's historic homes lands us at Waveland this
week, six miles south of downtown Lexington. The gracious antebellum mansion was
completed in 1848 by Joseph Bryan, a grandnephew of Daniel Boone. Waveland represents
a way of life that has long since vanished. According to family tradition, Boone
surveyed the original 2000+ acre grant for his nephew, Daniel Boone Bryan; a renowned
frontiersman, historian & poet. On this land, Daniel Bryan built a stone house
& equipped his estate with a number of innovations that proved to be profitable. He
built a gun shop that employed 25 men, operated a gristmill, manufactured saltpeter for
gunpowder, ran a blacksmith shop,
a distillery, & a paper mill. He also
built a Baptist Church here & established
a school for females.
Two years after Bryan's death,
his son, Joseph tore down the old
stone house & began construction
on the Waveland mansion. He
named the estate from the way the
wind blew or waved the fields of
grain & hemp surrounding the
building site. The classic Greek
Revival structure was inspired by
the work of Lexington architect John McMurtry & was built by Washington Allen, a
well known Lexington contractor. Lumber was cut from trees on the
property, bricks from clay dug & burned on site, & the estate's blacksmith wrought the
iron needed in construction. Stone for foundations was quarried & dressed at Tyrone
on the KY River & hauled to the property. 5 huge Ionic columns grace the portico &
frame the front entry. The doorway is considered to be an exact copy of the north entrance
to the Erechtheum at the Acropolis in Athens. The Bryan family lavished time
& money on Waveland, making it one of the showplaces of Central KY. The rooms
have high ceilings for relief from the hot summer months, a wide hall, & long porches
on either side of the house providing views of the countryside.
Joseph Henry Bryan inherited Waveland from his father in 1887 & established the
estate as one of the premier thoroughbred & trotter farms in KY. In1894, Waveland
was sold to Sallie A. Scott, who sold to James A. Hulett, Sr. in 1899. In 1956, the
Commonwealth of KY purchased the house & less than 200 of the original 2000 acres
for the UK College of Agriculture as an experimental farm & in 1957, Waveland became
a KY Life Museum. In 1971, UK deeded Waveland to the KY Dept. of Parks.
Today, the mansion & outbuildings are situated on 10 acres depicting KY life on a KY
plantation during the 1840's. The mansion is decorated in antebellum style & the outbuildings
include a 2 story brick servants quarters, an icehouse, smokehouse & barn.
Waveland State Park is open for tours Apr 1-Dec 15, Mon-Sat 10-5 pm, Sun 1-5 pm.
Paris Cemetery Gatehouse
"Located at the southern end of town, the Paris Cemetery Gatehouse is a significant
illustration of a Gothic Revival structure. The 1 1/2 story brick edifice
consists of a 3 bay Tudor arcade flanked by cubiform blocks, the southern one
housing the superintendent's office & the other originally serving as a reception
area. 4 piers that arise above the battlemented parapet support the arcade. Castiron
pinnacles of 2 designs cap the piers. The facades of the cubiform blocks are
delineated by paired rectangular
windows on the lower level & paired
square windows on the upper level, &
there are brick pilasters at each corner.
Under the continuous wooden cornice
are corbelled tables on all sides. Castiron
gates enhance the arches, & a late
Victorian cast-iron fence defines the
cemetery are south of the gatehouse.
This imposing structure was constructed
ca. 1847 for the Paris Cemetery Co.,
incorporated on January 30, 1847. The well executed & highly functional
gatehouse was designed by John McMurtry, a self-trained architect/ builder
from Lexington." (Historic Architecture of Bourbon County, KY) The structure
was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Several years after the Paris project, McMurtry was commissioned by the
Lexington Cemetery to design a similar gatehouse. In October, 1849, he completed
his part of the construction for Lexington Cemetery at a cost of $
2735.23. The next month, H. Moore received $ 14 for cutting stone sills for the
gateway & in December W.H. Newberry, a blacksmith was paid $ 254.15 for
making the 3 iron gates. The structure was more than a mere gateway. The
central vehicular entrance was flanked by narrower pedestrian gates & on either
side of these were reception & office rooms. Above the east gate was inscribed
"Lexington Cemetery Founded A.D. 1849" and over the west gate were the
words "The City of the Dead." This name was frequently used for many years
by the newspapers & in burial records. In 1890, the original Gothic gatehouse
was torn down and replaced with the present day Romanesque gatehouse. This
not only provided larger office space but chapel seating for 125. A new gateway
with entrance/exit drives & heavy iron gates was erected and still in use
today.
Sometimes you know not what you ask for !!!
Two Aussies, Frank and Steve, were adrift in a lifeboat. While rummaging through the
boat's provisions, Frank stumbled across an old lamp. He rubbed the lamp vigorously
and a genie came forth.
This genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three.
Without giving much thought to the matter, Frank blurted out, "Turn the entire ocean
into beer. Make that Victoria Bitter!"
The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the sea turned
into the hard-earned thirst quencher. The genie vanished.
Only the gentle lapping of beer on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered
their circumstances. Steve looked disgustedly at Frank whose wish had just been
granted.
After a long, tension-filled moment Steve said, "Nice going Frank! Now we're going to
have to whiz in the boat."
The Priest & the Teenage Boy
A Catholic teenager goes to confession, and after confessing to an
affair with a girl is told by the priest that he can't be forgiven unless he
reveals who the girl is. "I promised not to tell!" he says. "Was it Mary
Patricia, the butcher's daughter?" the priest asks. "No, and I said I
wouldn't tell." "Was it Mary Elizabeth, the printer's daughter?" "No,
and I still won't tell!" 'Was it Mary Francis, the baker's daughter?"
"No," says the boy. 'Well, son," says the priest, "I have no
choice but to excommunicate you for six months."
Outside, the boy's friends ask what happened.
"Well," he says, " Father was angry, so I got six months, but …
I also got three good leads."
