From leading the recycling effort through World War II to national good turns through Scouting for Food, we have been there to help when America needs us. Scouting is about giving of yourself and helping others. The Scout Slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily” comes to life as Scouts participate in service projects throughout the Council. In 2009, Scouts from the Northern Lights Council contributed more than 89,000 hours of community service. Scouting has provided 8,471,470 total service hours since February 2004 for the National “Good Turn for America” initiative, scheduled to run through the Scouting for Food is Scouting’s community stewardship project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the communities in which we live and work. Scouting for Food is a project rooted in the foundation of the Scouting movement. Through initiative and hard work, the Boy Scouts have developed a framework to help our local food pantries feed hungry residents. The Scouting program is delivered through hundreds of community organizations in the Northern Lights Council that are chartered by the Boy Scouts of America to serve our local youth through our 240 Cub Scout Packs, 149 Boy Scout Troops/Teams, 65 Venturing Crews, 9 Explorer Posts, and 39 Learning for Life groups. Local schools, churches, religious organizations, service organizations, community organizations and parent groups are the chartered partners through which the Scouting program serves youth in the Northern Lights Council. Youth and families previously underserved by Scouting are benefiting from the Northern Lights Council’s focus on Scoutreach, an initiative to ensure that all youth, including ethnically diverse and bi-lingual youth, have the opportunity to participate in Scouting. We are bringing the values-based programs of Scouting to all people, “where they live.”
