Respond<strong>in</strong>g to attacks by anti-creationists, I have<br />
located the source of the claim that some 800 billion<br />
fossils exist <strong>in</strong> the sedimentary rocks of the Karoo<br />
system and demonstrate that this figure is largely<br />
conjectural. Nevertheless, contrary to anticreationist<br />
arguments, it is completely possible for<br />
that many land vertebrates to have been simultaneously<br />
alive at one time (i.e. <strong>in</strong> the pre-Flood<br />
world). The pioneer<strong>in</strong>g creationists, Whitcomb and<br />
Morris, were entirely correct to cite the Karoo system<br />
as an example of an exceptional concentration of<br />
fossils, irrespective of the accuracy or otherwise of<br />
the 800 billion figure.<br />
