Welcome
Queensland Symphony Orchestra 2012
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 2012 season. This is an exciting time to be with the Queensland Symphony
orchestra whether you are coming along to listen, to play or to conduct.
There is movement at the studio: from Ferry Road, which was the orchestra’s home for
decades, we move into a magnificent new studio at South Bank, into the core of the cultural
centre of Brisbane. With open rehearsals, education concerts and new series we will throw open
our new doors to young and old.
There is movement in the orchestra: during the past five years the orchestra has acquired
twenty inspiring new members. This movement brings about new energy, new ideas, and new
relationships. For me it has been an absolute pleasure to work with this superb orchestra.
The musicians of the Queensland Symphony orchestra share my enthusiasm for great music,
enthusiasm that inspires dedication, that produces scintillating live performances.
Come and experience the 2012 season.
almost indescribable tension and profound
emotional intensity, ultimately released
Symphony no.6 Pastoral
Sergo Tiempo, a pianist one critic hailed
as “irresistible” in Chopin, performs
his magnum opus, which, despite its
larger scale remains unmistakably and
triumphantly Chopinesque and a tribute
to the unique emotions the composer
poured into it, epecially in the slow
movement, which is really an exquisite
nocturne. Beethoven’s ever fresh Pastoral
Symphony shows how a genius like
Beethoven could even improve on the
perfection of nature in this favourite work.
Gold Coast bus available
Like so many of Haydn’s named
symphonies, no one quite knows how the
Symphony no.88 came to be nicknamed
The Letter V. none of this matters when
you hear the blend of wit, charm and
inventiveness of this wonderful score.
elgar’s Enigma Variations, another
quintessentially english masterpiece,
immortalized his affectionate portraits
of tweedy eccentrics but the noble strains
of the Nimrod variation are among the
most moving and beloved english music
ever composed. Marshall McGuire,
that will delight.
Beethoven's Symphony no.4 is one of the
great individuality.
a program no romantic should miss!
Shakespeare’s play takes almost three
Composer Howard Shore brings J.R.R.
Tolkien’s literary imagination to vivid
life with his academy®- and Grammy®
award-winning score to The Lord of the
Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shore’s
music expresses Peter Jackson’s film as
an immense symphonic work—a uniquely
developed vision drawn from centuries of
stylistic tendencies.
The music of The Lord of the Rings is
counted among film music’s most complex
and comprehensive works. This unique
performance sets the score to the film,
but allows the music to bear the narrative
weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic
live concert experience.
Shore’s score not only captures Fellowship’s
sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and
grand journeys, but also echoes the very
construction of Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Styles, instruments and performers
collected from around the world provide
each of Tolkien’s cultures with a unique
musical imprint. In operatic fashion, these
musical worlds co-mingle, sometimes
combining forces for a culminated power,
other times violently clashing…and always
bending to the will of the one Ring and its
own ominous family of themes.
"My first score for
The Lord of the Rings
trilogy, The Fellowship
of the Ring, was
the beginning of
my journey into the
world of Tolkien and
I will always hold a
special fondness for
the music and the
experience."
Few other composers in australia or
anywhere else can boast that their music
has been heard as part of the opening
ceremony of the Sydney olympics, as the
occasional theme to Philip adams cerebral
late night talk fest on Radio national
and in a Lloyds’ Bank commercial. elena
Kats-Chernin is not only one of australia’s
most eclectic composers – her output
ranges from opera to miniatures and often
showcases her off-beat take – but also
one of the most prolific. She frequently
has up to six compositions on the go
simultaneously. Following the great success
of her Composer-in-Residency last year,
we are delighted to welcome her back in
2012. amy Dickson recently released a
new recording, in which she re-defines
the saxophone as a classical instrument
through her choice of indisputably beautiful
and innovative repertoire, including Glass's
Violin Concerto no.1.
Jack Liebeck stars in the Lindberg Violin Concerto
Magnus Lindberg, sometimes dubbed the
bad boy of contemporary music, composed
his Violin Concerto in 2006 and it has made
rapid inroads into the repertoire of several
leading violinists. Miraculously, Lindberg
creates shimmering sonorities with the
Mozart-sized orchestra and a rhapsodic
solo role for the violinist. Kats-Chernin's
two pieces are beautiful explorations of her
quirky talent.
