Traditional Desserts <strong>and</strong> Drinks<br />

•Sweet Tea: All tea in <strong>the</strong> south is sweet, if<br />

you like it o<strong>the</strong>rwise be sure <strong>to</strong> specify.<br />

Consider <strong>the</strong> “house wine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south.”<br />

•Coke: All ‘soda’ in <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> is called ‘coke’.<br />

If you ever order ‘coke’ <strong>to</strong> drink, <strong>the</strong> server<br />

will most likely ask what kind.<br />

•Peach Cobbler: <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is <strong>the</strong> #2<br />

peach producer in <strong>the</strong> nation <strong>and</strong> lead all<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn states, including Georgia! Naturally<br />

our favorite kind <strong>of</strong> cobbler is peach.<br />

•Pecan Pie: Sweet pie made mostly <strong>of</strong> corn<br />

syrup <strong>and</strong> pecan nuts. This dessert is a must<br />

at any Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Thanksgiving or Holiday<br />

meal!<br />

•Sweet Pota<strong>to</strong> Casserole: Dish made up <strong>of</strong><br />

mashed sweet pota<strong>to</strong>es <strong>to</strong>pped with brown<br />

sugar <strong>and</strong> pecan <strong>to</strong>ppings. Most commonly<br />

served at Thanksgiving.<br />

•Pound cake: The name comes from <strong>the</strong> traditional way it was prepared: one pound<br />

each <strong>of</strong> flour, butter, eggs, <strong>and</strong> sugar. Pound cakes come in a variety <strong>of</strong> flavors like<br />

lemon, coconut cream, chocolate, marble swirl, etc. <strong>and</strong> are <strong>of</strong>ten served at picnics <strong>and</strong><br />

potlucks.<br />

•Banana Pudding: This yummy concoction consists <strong>of</strong> repeated layers <strong>of</strong> vanilla<br />

custard (sometimespudding), vanilla wafers, <strong>and</strong> sliced bananas. It is all <strong>to</strong>pped <strong>of</strong>f<br />

with whipped cream!<br />

Fair Food<br />

As <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r gets cooler <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaves began <strong>to</strong> turn, residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong><br />

know that not only fall is around <strong>the</strong> corner, but so is <strong>the</strong> State Fair! The State Fair<br />

takes place right here in<br />

<strong>Columbia</strong>. It is a 12-day event <strong>of</strong> rides, games, <strong>and</strong> best <strong>of</strong> all, fair food. Everything<br />

at <strong>the</strong> fair is fried, unhealthy, <strong>and</strong> absolutely delicious. It is an event that you do not<br />

want <strong>to</strong> miss! The dates for 2012 State Fair are Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10 – 21. Here is a preview<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scrumptious foods that you will find only at <strong>the</strong> fair: •Deep-fried twinkies •Fried<br />

Coca-Cola •Fried Kool-aid •Elephant ears (deep-fried batter covered in powdered<br />

sugar) •Corn dogs •Gyros •Fried Snickers •Fried Oreos •1.5 pound turkey legs! •Fiske<br />

fries doused with vinegar •C<strong>and</strong>ied (Granny Smith) apples •Cot<strong>to</strong>n c<strong>and</strong>y •Funnel<br />

cakes
