FOOD<br />

OF THE<br />

SOUTH<br />

Hey Y’all! Welcome <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn cooking, where anything can be<br />

fried <strong>and</strong> we love our sweet tea! Did you know that many staple Sou<strong>the</strong>rn items<br />

like squash, <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>es, corn, <strong>and</strong> grits were inherited from <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern Native<br />

American tribes such as <strong>the</strong> Caddo, Choctaw, <strong>and</strong> Seminole? Also, <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong>’s<br />

inclination <strong>of</strong> a full breakfast (as opposed <strong>to</strong> a Continental Breakfast) derives<br />

from <strong>the</strong> British ‘fry up’ (think bacon <strong>and</strong> eggs).<br />

•Collard greens: Loose-leafed plant that is grown for its large, dark-colored,<br />

edible leaves. Are a staple vegetable in <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong>. They are usually seasoned<br />

with smoked or salted meats, diced onions, vinegar <strong>and</strong> pepper. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is<br />

<strong>the</strong> second leading producer in <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

•Hush puppies: Delicious side dish made from cornmeal batter that is deep fried<br />

in small sphere shapes. Severed with barbeque or fried seafood items.<br />

Traditional Meals<br />

•Grits (Especially shrimp <strong>and</strong> Grits): A food <strong>of</strong> Native American <strong>and</strong> is mainly<br />

eaten at breakfast as a side dish. They consist <strong>of</strong> coarsely ground corn <strong>and</strong> many<br />

times include shrimp. In 1976, <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> named grits <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial state food.<br />

• Barbeque: In <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong>, we take our barbeque seriously! There are many<br />

different kinds <strong>of</strong> BBQ <strong>and</strong> vary by region. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is <strong>the</strong> only state that<br />

includes all four recognized barbecue sauces,<br />

including mustard-based, vinegar-based, <strong>and</strong> light <strong>and</strong> heavy <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>-based.[14]<br />

Memphis barbecue is best known for <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>- <strong>and</strong> vinegar-based sauces.<br />

• She-Crab Soup: A rich soup, similar <strong>to</strong> bisque, made <strong>of</strong> milk or heavy cream,<br />

crab or fish s<strong>to</strong>ck, Atlantic blue crab meat, <strong>and</strong> (traditionally) crab roe, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

small amount <strong>of</strong> dry sherry added as it is plated. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>'s finest<br />

culinary creations; this dish is made with crab meat, crab roe, <strong>and</strong> sherry.<br />

• Oysters: Can be eaten on <strong>the</strong> half shell, raw, smoked, boiled, baked, fried,<br />

roasted, stewed, canned, pickled, steamed, broiled or used in a variety <strong>of</strong> drinks.<br />

Oyster Roasts are a tradition in <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> that allows family <strong>and</strong> friends <strong>to</strong> get<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r. They usually occur in <strong>the</strong> winter months when <strong>the</strong> oysters are not<br />

spawning, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> taste <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se plump creatures is at its best.<br />

• Chicken <strong>and</strong> Dumplings: A comfort food <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south <strong>and</strong> is a combination <strong>of</strong><br />

multiple dumplings, boiled chicken meat, <strong>and</strong> chicken broth.<br />

•Meatloaf: made up <strong>of</strong> ground meat <strong>and</strong> fillers <strong>and</strong> formed in<strong>to</strong> a loaf shape.<br />

Covered with ei<strong>the</strong>r a <strong>to</strong>ma<strong>to</strong>-based, barbeque, or gravy sauce. Usually served<br />

with mashed pota<strong>to</strong>es.<br />

• Meat <strong>and</strong> Three: Choice <strong>of</strong> any meat <strong>and</strong> three vegetables side dishes. Very<br />

common in traditional ‘home cooking’ style restaurants.<br />

11

12<br />

Traditional Desserts <strong>and</strong> Drinks<br />

•Sweet Tea: All tea in <strong>the</strong> south is sweet, if<br />

you like it o<strong>the</strong>rwise be sure <strong>to</strong> specify.<br />

Consider <strong>the</strong> “house wine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south.”<br />

•Coke: All ‘soda’ in <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> is called ‘coke’.<br />

If you ever order ‘coke’ <strong>to</strong> drink, <strong>the</strong> server<br />

will most likely ask what kind.<br />

•Peach Cobbler: <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is <strong>the</strong> #2<br />

peach producer in <strong>the</strong> nation <strong>and</strong> lead all<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn states, including Georgia! Naturally<br />

our favorite kind <strong>of</strong> cobbler is peach.<br />

•Pecan Pie: Sweet pie made mostly <strong>of</strong> corn<br />

syrup <strong>and</strong> pecan nuts. This dessert is a must<br />

at any Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Thanksgiving or Holiday<br />

meal!<br />

•Sweet Pota<strong>to</strong> Casserole: Dish made up <strong>of</strong><br />

mashed sweet pota<strong>to</strong>es <strong>to</strong>pped with brown<br />

sugar <strong>and</strong> pecan <strong>to</strong>ppings. Most commonly<br />

served at Thanksgiving.<br />

•Pound cake: The name comes from <strong>the</strong> traditional way it was prepared: one pound<br />

each <strong>of</strong> flour, butter, eggs, <strong>and</strong> sugar. Pound cakes come in a variety <strong>of</strong> flavors like<br />

lemon, coconut cream, chocolate, marble swirl, etc. <strong>and</strong> are <strong>of</strong>ten served at picnics <strong>and</strong><br />

potlucks.<br />

•Banana Pudding: This yummy concoction consists <strong>of</strong> repeated layers <strong>of</strong> vanilla<br />

custard (sometimespudding), vanilla wafers, <strong>and</strong> sliced bananas. It is all <strong>to</strong>pped <strong>of</strong>f<br />

with whipped cream!<br />

Fair Food<br />

As <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r gets cooler <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaves began <strong>to</strong> turn, residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong><br />

know that not only fall is around <strong>the</strong> corner, but so is <strong>the</strong> State Fair! The State Fair<br />

takes place right here in<br />

<strong>Columbia</strong>. It is a 12-day event <strong>of</strong> rides, games, <strong>and</strong> best <strong>of</strong> all, fair food. Everything<br />

at <strong>the</strong> fair is fried, unhealthy, <strong>and</strong> absolutely delicious. It is an event that you do not<br />

want <strong>to</strong> miss! The dates for 2012 State Fair are Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10 – 21. Here is a preview<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scrumptious foods that you will find only at <strong>the</strong> fair: •Deep-fried twinkies •Fried<br />

SOUTHERN<br />

FASHION<br />

Vera Bradley<br />

You will likely see <strong>the</strong>se brightly-colored, swirling <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten floral patterns<br />

all across campus. Vera Bradley bags are popular school <strong>to</strong>tes. Ladies will<br />

also carry Vera Bradley purses <strong>and</strong> on long weekends, pack in her<br />

luggage.<br />

Monograms<br />

A motif made by overlapping or combining <strong>the</strong> initials <strong>of</strong> an individual, a<br />

company, or a newly engaged or married couple. A traditional 3-letter<br />

monogram has <strong>the</strong> initial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual’s last name set larger or in <strong>the</strong><br />

middle, where <strong>the</strong> first initial appears <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> left <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle initial <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> right. For a newly engaged or married couple, <strong>the</strong> last name would be<br />

in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> initials on each side would be <strong>the</strong> first names <strong>of</strong> each<br />

person. Monograms are popular everywhere but especially popular in <strong>the</strong><br />

south. We will monogram everything from a dog’s collar <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>wels <strong>to</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong>bags <strong>to</strong> stationary <strong>to</strong> luggage hats <strong>to</strong> cups <strong>to</strong> napkins. If <strong>the</strong>re is an<br />

option <strong>to</strong> monogram an item, Sou<strong>the</strong>rners are going <strong>to</strong> take it!<br />

Croakies<br />

Croakies is <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> an American company that makes neoprene<br />

straps that attach <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> frame <strong>of</strong> sunglasses <strong>to</strong> ensure <strong>the</strong>y stay wrapped<br />

around your neck in case <strong>the</strong>y are knocked from your face. Croakies is <strong>the</strong><br />

trademarked name br<strong>and</strong>, but even generic neoprene eyewear straps are<br />

referred <strong>to</strong> as croakies. According <strong>to</strong> Ehow.com, “The original Croakie<br />

eyewear retainer was invented by a ski patrolman in Jacksonhole,<br />

Wyoming in 1977. He sought a way <strong>to</strong> keep glasses from falling <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> his<br />

head during his adventures <strong>and</strong> found his solution in <strong>the</strong> neoprene material<br />

used <strong>to</strong> construct wetsuits. Using <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> a Chinese finger trap, he<br />

constructed his first eyewear strap <strong>and</strong> could keep his glasses hanging<br />

around his neck <strong>and</strong> secured on his head during rigorous activity.” Croakies<br />

have become much more than a necessity for active outdoor enthusiasts.<br />

They have crossed over in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> college fashion world, especially among<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn fraternity boys.<br />

Sperrys (boat shoes)<br />

“Sperry Top-Sider has been an American Original since 1935 when Paul<br />

Sperry invented <strong>the</strong> first boat shoe for sailors. As Paul Sperry watched his<br />

cocker spaniel, Prince, run across <strong>the</strong> ice on a winter’s day in Connecticut,<br />

he noticed his dog’s amazing ability <strong>to</strong> maintain traction on <strong>the</strong> slippery<br />

surface. Turning over Prince’s paw, he observed hundreds <strong>of</strong> tiny cracks<br />

<strong>and</strong> cuts going in all directions. These wave-like grooves became <strong>the</strong><br />

inspiration for Mr. Sperry’s latest patent, called Razor-Siping, <strong>and</strong><br />

were instrumental in maximizing <strong>the</strong> traction <strong>and</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Au<strong>the</strong>ntic Original Sperry Top-Sider first introduced in 1935.”<br />

Seer Sucker<br />

Thin, all-cot<strong>to</strong>n fabric, commonly striped or checkered, used <strong>to</strong> make<br />

clothing for spring <strong>and</strong> summer wear. Seersucker is woven in such a way<br />

that some threads bunch <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, giving <strong>the</strong> fabric a wrinkled<br />

appearance in places. This feature causes <strong>the</strong> fabric <strong>to</strong> be mostly held<br />

away from <strong>the</strong> skin when worn, facilitating improved heat dissipation <strong>and</strong><br />

air circulation. Common items <strong>of</strong> clothing made from seersucker include<br />

suits, pants, shorts, <strong>and</strong> dresses. You will also see patterns—whales, fish,<br />

crabs, flamingos, palm trees—on pants <strong>and</strong> shorts!

SOUTHERN<br />

HOSPITALITY<br />

S<br />

Bow Ties<br />

The bow tie is making a comeback with fun-formal events such as dinner,<br />

cocktail parties <strong>and</strong> nights out on <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn. Bow ties, especially narrow "string<br />

ties," are still popular with men <strong>of</strong> all ages in <strong>the</strong> American <strong>South</strong>. It is also<br />

much more common <strong>to</strong> wear a bow tie with a dinner jacket than it is <strong>to</strong> wear a<br />

necktie with one; <strong>the</strong> latter is technically incorrect. Bow ties are also sometimes<br />

worn as an alternative <strong>to</strong> ascot ties when wearing a morning coat.<br />

Sundresses<br />

A sundress is intended <strong>to</strong> be worn by women in warm wea<strong>the</strong>r. Typically, it is an<br />

informal or casual dress in a lightweight fabric, most commonly cot<strong>to</strong>n, <strong>and</strong><br />

usually loose fitting. The dress is intended <strong>to</strong> be worn without a layering <strong>to</strong>p,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> design must <strong>the</strong>refore cut a balance between modesty <strong>and</strong> sun<br />

exposure. Lilly Pulitzer popularized <strong>the</strong> sundress in <strong>the</strong> 1960s.<br />

There are several distinct features <strong>of</strong> typical So<strong>the</strong>rn Hospitality, or etiquette.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>ms may be seen as odd or <strong>of</strong>fensive by o<strong>the</strong>rs; however, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are considered polite in Sou<strong>the</strong>rn culture <strong>and</strong> are an expression <strong>of</strong> a<br />

traditional warm greeting <strong>and</strong> care for one ano<strong>the</strong>r. First, <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> “Sir” or<br />

“Ma’am” is a sign <strong>of</strong> respect <strong>and</strong> is used <strong>of</strong>ten in regular conversation. The act<br />

<strong>of</strong> opening doors for women is common <strong>and</strong> again, is seen as an act <strong>of</strong><br />

respect. Sou<strong>the</strong>rners are known for excessive talking <strong>and</strong> slowness. They love<br />

<strong>to</strong> gab <strong>and</strong> catch up on o<strong>the</strong>rs’ lives. It is common for a quick grocery s<strong>to</strong>re trip<br />

intended <strong>to</strong> only take twenty minutes <strong>to</strong> take over forty-five because a<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rner ran in<strong>to</strong> a neighbor. People from <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> are also traditionally<br />

big on smiling <strong>and</strong> waving. They <strong>of</strong>ten greet passing strangers with a great<br />

smile or a giant wave. Also, do not be surprised if people say hello or ask how<br />

you’re doing when passing. This practice is especially common on college<br />

campuses. And let’s not forget food! Food is an important part <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

culture. Sou<strong>the</strong>rners will use any excuse <strong>to</strong> get family <strong>and</strong> friends <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong><br />

eat a big ‘ol meal. Many families have a ‘Sunday Supper’ where all members<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r at one house around lunchtime <strong>and</strong> feast on an array <strong>of</strong> dishes brought<br />

by everyone. During mourning or if a member <strong>of</strong> a community is ill, <strong>the</strong><br />

neighborhood will come <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> proud <strong>the</strong> family with meals for at least<br />

two weeks. Sou<strong>the</strong>rners also love <strong>to</strong> call people <strong>the</strong>y know by <strong>the</strong>ir last names.<br />

The closer you are with someone, eventually your first name disappears<br />

entirely <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> you’re only known by your last name. Take it as a sign <strong>of</strong><br />

friendship!<br />

CAROLINA<br />

A Brief<br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Carolina</strong>’s<br />

Flagship<br />

<strong>University</strong><br />

The Palmet<strong>to</strong> State established <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> College—<strong>the</strong> precursor <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>—on Dec. 19, 1801, as part <strong>of</strong> an effort <strong>to</strong> unite <strong>South</strong> Carolinians in<br />

<strong>the</strong> wake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Revolution. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>'s leaders saw <strong>the</strong> new college as<br />

a way <strong>to</strong> promote "<strong>the</strong> good order <strong>and</strong> harmony" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. The founding <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> College was also a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn public college movement spurred<br />

by Thomas Jefferson. Within 20 years <strong>of</strong> one ano<strong>the</strong>r, Georgia, North <strong>Carolina</strong>, <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Carolina</strong>, <strong>and</strong> Virginia established state-supported colleges. In <strong>the</strong> antebellum era, <strong>the</strong><br />

Palmet<strong>to</strong> State generously supported <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> College, <strong>and</strong> it became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

most influential colleges in <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> before 1861, earning a reputation as <strong>the</strong> training<br />

ground for <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>'s<br />

antebellum elite.<br />

Rutledge DeSaussure McKissick Maxcy<br />

The Horseshoe campus<br />

The campus grew around <strong>the</strong> modified quadrangle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe. In 1805,<br />

four years after <strong>the</strong> college was chartered, its first building, Rutledge, was<br />

completed. Classes began that year with two faculty members <strong>and</strong> nine students.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> only academic facility, Rutledge served as classroom, lab, library, chapel,<br />

<strong>and</strong> student <strong>and</strong> faculty housing until DeSaussure was completed on <strong>the</strong> north<br />

side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe in 1809. Throughout <strong>the</strong> next 38 years, <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

shape with eight more buildings. (The Horseshoe’s 11th building, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> only<br />

one not built in <strong>the</strong> 19th century, is McKissick, completed in 1940.) Robert Mills,<br />

<strong>the</strong> nation’s first federal architect <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> designer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Washing<strong>to</strong>n Monument,<br />

greatly influenced <strong>the</strong> architecture <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> College. Mills was involved<br />

in <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> Rutledge, <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana Library, <strong>and</strong> Maxcy Monument in <strong>the</strong><br />

center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe, named for <strong>the</strong> first president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college, Jonathan<br />

Maxcy. The <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana Library was <strong>the</strong> first freest<strong>and</strong>ing college library<br />

building in <strong>the</strong> nation when it was completed in 1840.<br />

Stability, post-war boom<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> went through several reorganizations in which <strong>the</strong> curriculum frequently<br />

changed <strong>and</strong> its status shifted from college <strong>to</strong> university <strong>and</strong> back again. In<br />

1906, <strong>the</strong> institution was rechartered for <strong>the</strong> final time as <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Carolina</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> early decades <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20th century, <strong>Carolina</strong> made strides<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward becoming a comprehensive university, <strong>and</strong> in 1917 became <strong>the</strong> first s<br />

tate-supported college or university in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>to</strong> earn regional<br />

accreditation. The 1920s witnessed fur<strong>the</strong>r progress <strong>and</strong> growth, with <strong>the</strong><br />

introduction <strong>of</strong> new colleges <strong>and</strong> degree programs, including <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate. The<br />

Great Depression temporarily stalled this progress, but <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> World<br />

War II launched an era that transformed <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. <strong>Carolina</strong> hosted Naval<br />

training programs during <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>and</strong> enrollment more than doubled in <strong>the</strong><br />

post-war era as veterans <strong>to</strong>ok advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> G.I. Bill.<br />

16

Integration, enrollment explosion<br />

In <strong>the</strong> 1950s, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> began recruiting national-caliber faculty <strong>and</strong><br />

extended its presence beyond <strong>Columbia</strong> with <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> campuses<br />

in communities across <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>. On Sept. 11, 1963, Henrie D.<br />

Monteith, Robert Anderson <strong>and</strong> James Solomon became <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> an<br />

increasing number <strong>of</strong> African-American students <strong>to</strong> enroll at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

in <strong>the</strong> 20th century; in 1965, Monteith became <strong>the</strong> first African-American<br />

graduate, earning a BS in biochemistry.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> ensuing years, <strong>Carolina</strong> underwent explosive growth as <strong>the</strong> “baby boom” generation<br />

entered college. Enrollment s<strong>to</strong>od at 5,660 in 1960, but by 1979 had reached nearly 26,000<br />

students on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> campus alone.<br />

National recognition<br />

Today <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is not only <strong>the</strong> state's flagship university<br />

but also is a rising national star. It is consistently ranked as <strong>the</strong> country's best<br />

program for international business by U.S. News & World Report <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

publications; is one <strong>of</strong> only 23 public universities in <strong>the</strong> nation with <strong>the</strong><br />

Carnegie Foundation's highest research designation <strong>to</strong> be named among <strong>the</strong><br />

nation's leaders in providing programs that benefit <strong>and</strong> engage communities;<br />

was ranked No. 42 in <strong>the</strong> nation for in-state students by Kiplinger's "Best Values<br />

in Public Colleges" in 2011; <strong>and</strong> was on <strong>the</strong> Prince<strong>to</strong>n Review's "100 Best Value<br />

Colleges for 2011" list.<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> Alert<br />

Every Friday around noon, you will hear a loud rooster crow. We do have<br />

that much school spirit that when our beloved gamecock crows it is music<br />

<strong>to</strong> our ears, but this is actually a weekly test <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outdoor warning alerts.<br />

Those alarms are just one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many ways <strong>the</strong> university will communicate<br />

<strong>to</strong> students, faculty, <strong>and</strong> staff about wea<strong>the</strong>r emergencies <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r types<br />

Libraries<br />

The Thomas Cooper Library is <strong>the</strong> main library on campus is located next <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Russell House. Though it may not look that big from <strong>the</strong> outside, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> library is 5 floors underground. It can get very confusing when you are<br />

going down <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong> Level 4! Keep this in mind, <strong>the</strong> lower <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> level<br />

you need <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong>, <strong>the</strong> lower you should go. During <strong>the</strong> school year, TCL is open<br />

24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It has a large computer lab, a number <strong>of</strong> study<br />

rooms <strong>of</strong> all sizes, a café on <strong>the</strong> main level, <strong>and</strong> a friendly <strong>and</strong> helpful staff.<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Library, <strong>the</strong> Music Library, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana Library.<br />

Definitely make a point <strong>to</strong> make a quick (or longer) trip <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana<br />

Library. It is one <strong>of</strong> USC’s hidden gems. <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana is located on <strong>the</strong><br />

his<strong>to</strong>ric Horseshoe. It was USC’s main library up until 1940 <strong>and</strong> was designed<br />

by architect Robert Mills, a <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> native who designed many l<strong>and</strong>mark<br />

buildings in Washing<strong>to</strong>n D.C. during <strong>the</strong> 1800s, his most famous being <strong>the</strong><br />

Washing<strong>to</strong>n Monument. <strong>South</strong> Caroliniana’s o<strong>the</strong>r claim <strong>to</strong> fame is that was <strong>the</strong><br />

first free-st<strong>and</strong>ing academic library in <strong>the</strong> country. It houses many original<br />

university archives <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r his<strong>to</strong>ric documents.<br />

The Horseshoe<br />

The Horseshoe (also casually <strong>and</strong> affectionately known as <strong>the</strong> ‘Shoe) is <strong>the</strong><br />

original part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>’s campus which dates back <strong>to</strong><br />

1805. The gates that lead in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe have become a symbol for <strong>the</strong><br />

university. The Horseshoe is made up 11 his<strong>to</strong>ric buildings which are all in use<br />

<strong>and</strong> serve different roles for <strong>the</strong> university such as classrooms, <strong>of</strong>fices, residence<br />

halls, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> President’s House. 10 <strong>of</strong> those buildings date back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th<br />

century <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire Horseshoe is listed on <strong>the</strong> National Register <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ric<br />

Places. The engraved bricks that make up <strong>the</strong> pathways through <strong>and</strong> around <strong>the</strong><br />

Horseshoe have been donated by alumni. The Horseshoe continues <strong>to</strong> be heart<br />

<strong>and</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>. On a nice day, it will be filled<br />

with students playing Frisbee, enjoying lunch, or studying. If a prominent figure<br />

or event comes <strong>to</strong> USC, it is very likely <strong>the</strong>y will speak or perform from <strong>the</strong><br />

Horseshoe. Pope John Paul II, President Ronald Reagan, alumni Hootie <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Blowfish, <strong>and</strong> ESPN’s College Game Day are <strong>the</strong> select few who have<br />

<strong>Carolina</strong> H<strong>and</strong>book<br />

Every school has <strong>the</strong>ir own special guideline book, USC is no different. Known as<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Community, this is a lengthy document <strong>and</strong> as much as we would have<br />

loved <strong>to</strong> have printed it all for you it was just not feasible. Visit http://www.sa.sc.<br />

edu/carolinacommunity/<strong>to</strong> read up on plagiarism, attendance <strong>and</strong> behavior<br />

policies. As a student at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>, you are responsible for<br />

knowing <strong>and</strong> upholding it on <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>f campus.<br />

Carolinian Creed<br />

The Carolinian Creed really embodies everything that USC is <strong>and</strong> wants <strong>to</strong><br />

be. So read it, sign it, <strong>and</strong> mean it.<br />

The community <strong>of</strong> scholars at <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is dedicated <strong>to</strong><br />

personal <strong>and</strong> academic excellence.<br />

Choosing <strong>to</strong> join <strong>the</strong> community obligates each member<br />

<strong>to</strong> a code <strong>of</strong> civilized behavior.<br />

As a Carolinian...<br />

I will practice<br />

personal <strong>and</strong> academic integrity;<br />

I will respect<br />

<strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> all persons;<br />

I will respect<br />

<strong>the</strong> rights <strong>and</strong> property <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs;<br />

I will discourage<br />

bigotry, while striving <strong>to</strong> learn from<br />

differences in people, ideas <strong>and</strong> opinions;<br />

I will demonstrate<br />

concern for o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>ir feelings, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir need for<br />

conditions which support <strong>the</strong>ir work <strong>and</strong> development.<br />

Allegiance <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ideals requires each Carolinian<br />

<strong>to</strong> refrain from <strong>and</strong> discourage behaviors which threaten<br />

<strong>the</strong> freedom <strong>and</strong> respect every individual deserves.<br />

USC<br />

TRADITIONS<br />

Are you kidding!?! This is SEC football; <strong>of</strong> course <strong>the</strong>re are traditions! SEC football<br />

means great games against Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, V<strong>and</strong>erbilt,<br />

Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi <strong>and</strong> Mississippi State. And <strong>of</strong> course<br />

we always play our rival, Clemson! Although a lot <strong>of</strong> traditions do coincide with<br />

football, <strong>the</strong>re are many o<strong>the</strong>r traditions that are unique <strong>to</strong> USC that does not<br />

revolve around athletics.<br />

Overview<br />

Official Nickname: Fighting Gamecocks (Shortened <strong>to</strong> ‘Gamecocks’<br />

<strong>and</strong> ‘Cocks’)<br />

Alma Mater – We Hail Thee <strong>Carolina</strong><br />

We hail <strong>the</strong>e, <strong>Carolina</strong>, <strong>and</strong> sing thy high praise<br />

With loyal devotion, remembering <strong>the</strong> days<br />

When proudly we sought <strong>the</strong>e, thy children <strong>to</strong> be:<br />

Here’s a health, <strong>Carolina</strong>, forever <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>e!<br />

Since pilgrims <strong>of</strong> learning, we entered thy walls<br />

And found dearest comrades in thy classic halls<br />

We’ve honored <strong>and</strong> loved <strong>the</strong>e as sons faithfully;<br />

Here’s a health, <strong>Carolina</strong>, forever <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>e!<br />

Generations <strong>of</strong> sons have rejoiced <strong>to</strong> proclaim<br />

Thy watchword <strong>of</strong> service, thy beauty <strong>and</strong> fame;<br />

For ages <strong>to</strong> come shall <strong>the</strong>ir rallying cry be:<br />

Here’s a health, <strong>Carolina</strong>, forever <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>e!<br />

Fair shrine <strong>of</strong> high honor <strong>and</strong> truth, thou shalt still<br />

Blaze forth as a beacon, thy mission fulfill,<br />

And crowned by all hearts in a new jubilee:<br />

Here’s a health, <strong>Carolina</strong>, forever <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>e!<br />

Singing <strong>the</strong> Alma Mater is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>’s most beloved traditions. You<br />

will hear <strong>the</strong> song played around campus, at university ceremonies, <strong>and</strong> especially at athletic<br />

events. When <strong>the</strong> song reaches “Here’s a health” students <strong>and</strong> alumni will raise <strong>the</strong>ir right arm,<br />

curve <strong>the</strong>ir fingers as if holding a drink, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer a <strong>to</strong>ast <strong>to</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>.<br />

Fight Song – The Fighting Gamecocks Lead <strong>the</strong> Way<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r song you will hear at USC athletic events is <strong>the</strong> fight song:<br />

Hey, Let’s give a cheer, <strong>Carolina</strong> is here,<br />

The Fighting Gamecocks lead <strong>the</strong> way.<br />

Who gives a care, If <strong>the</strong> going gets <strong>to</strong>ugh,<br />

And when it is rough, that’s when <strong>the</strong> ‘Cocks get going.<br />

Hail <strong>to</strong> our colors <strong>of</strong> garnet <strong>and</strong> Black,<br />

In <strong>Carolina</strong> pride have we.<br />

So, Go Gamecocks Go - FIGHT!<br />

Drive for <strong>the</strong> goal - FIGHT!<br />

USC will win <strong>to</strong>day - GO COCKS!<br />

So, let’s give a cheer, <strong>Carolina</strong> is here.<br />

The Fighting Gamecocks All The Way!<br />

Chicken Finger Wednesday<br />

Chicken Finger Wednesday is one <strong>of</strong> USC students’ favorite meals <strong>and</strong> something <strong>the</strong>y look<br />

forward <strong>to</strong> each week. The famous chicken fingers <strong>and</strong> curly fries can be purchased in <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong><br />

Market Place on <strong>the</strong> first floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russell House. There will probably be a line so follow <strong>and</strong><br />

look for <strong>the</strong> crowds!<br />

Dance Marathon<br />

Every February, hundreds <strong>of</strong> USC students participate in Dance Marathon. Dance<br />

Marathon is an event that happens on campuses across <strong>the</strong> country <strong>to</strong> raise money<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Children’s Miracle Network. It is 24 hours <strong>of</strong> straight dancing <strong>and</strong> moving!<br />

DM at USC is <strong>the</strong> largest student-run philanthropy in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> marathon students learn different dances <strong>to</strong> keep <strong>the</strong>m moving, dress in<br />

silly outfits, <strong>and</strong> are visited by children <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir families who directly benefit from<br />

<strong>the</strong> funds donated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Children’s Miracle Network.<br />

Class Rings<br />

While you at USC, you will probably hear students talking about getting <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

class ring <strong>and</strong> mentions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ring Ceremony. The class ring tradition began in<br />

1999 as a way for students <strong>to</strong> build <strong>the</strong>ir lifelong relationship with <strong>the</strong> university<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y move <strong>to</strong>wards being alumni. Students have <strong>the</strong> option <strong>of</strong><br />

ordering a class ring <strong>and</strong> are <strong>the</strong>y presented with it by <strong>the</strong> President at <strong>the</strong> Ring<br />

Ceremony which takes place in November <strong>and</strong> April on <strong>the</strong> Horseshoe<br />

(wea<strong>the</strong>r-permitting). It is always a special time for students <strong>to</strong> reflect on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

years at <strong>Carolina</strong>.<br />

Homecoming<br />

Homecoming is an exciting week each fall at USC. Every year Homecoming has a<br />

different <strong>the</strong>me, but <strong>the</strong> events throughout <strong>the</strong> week remain <strong>the</strong> same.<br />

Homecoming Week starts with clubs <strong>and</strong> organizations putting up homemade<br />

banners on Greene Street. Monday is Homecoming Kick<strong>of</strong>f on Greene Street<br />

where students can pick up Homecoming swag <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r freebies from<br />

organizations, university <strong>of</strong>fices, <strong>and</strong> local business. Tuesday night is <strong>the</strong> Showcase<br />

which introduces <strong>the</strong> Homecoming King <strong>and</strong> Queen c<strong>and</strong>idates. Wednesday is<br />

Canned Creations where groups build different structures out <strong>of</strong> canned goods<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n those cans are donated <strong>to</strong> a local food bank. Wednesday night is <strong>the</strong><br />

much anticipated Spurs <strong>and</strong> Struts dance competition. Thursday is <strong>the</strong> Cockfest<br />

Pep Rally <strong>and</strong> Friday is a parade through campus with student-made floats. On<br />

Friday evening is a Step Show featuring members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NPHC Greek<br />

organizations (if you have never gone <strong>to</strong> a step show, this is a MUST!!! Incredible!)<br />

Homecoming Week culminates on Saturday with a football game!<br />

BIGGEST<br />

RIVALRY:<br />

CLEMSON,<br />

OF COURSE!<br />

Tiger Burn<br />

Tiger Burn is probably one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most popular traditions at <strong>Carolina</strong>. The<br />

tradition <strong>of</strong> Tiger Burn grew from <strong>the</strong> 1902 feud between <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>and</strong> Clemson<br />

students over Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Colcock’s drawing <strong>of</strong> a gamecock crowing over a<br />

defeated tiger. Each year, students design <strong>and</strong> construct a 25-foot tiger that is<br />

burned at a pep rally <strong>the</strong> week before <strong>the</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>-Clemson football game<br />

(Recently it has been <strong>the</strong> Monday before <strong>the</strong> game). Until 1959, this annual<br />

gridiron brawl was known as Big Thursday <strong>and</strong> was always played during <strong>the</strong><br />

week <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Fair in <strong>Columbia</strong>. The <strong>Carolina</strong>-Clemson game is now played<br />

<strong>the</strong> Saturday after Thanksgiving (usually rivalry weekend in college football).<br />

The Annual <strong>Carolina</strong>-Clemson Blood Drive is ano<strong>the</strong>r campus tradition <strong>the</strong> week before <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Carolina</strong>-Clemson football game. Each school encourages students, faculty, staff, alumni, <strong>and</strong> fans<br />

<strong>to</strong> participate. Each donor receives shirt recognizing <strong>the</strong> event <strong>and</strong> free food while <strong>the</strong>y wait <strong>to</strong><br />

be discharged from <strong>the</strong> donation site. The winning school is publicly announced <strong>and</strong> received a<br />

trophy at <strong>the</strong> game.<br />

GAMECOCKS?<br />

(WHATS A<br />

GAMECOCK?)<br />

We’ll let Cocky<br />

tell you about<br />

his roots…<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is <strong>the</strong> only major college athletic program in <strong>the</strong><br />

country that uses "Fighting Gamecocks" as its <strong>of</strong>ficial nickname <strong>and</strong> mascot. The<br />

<strong>University</strong>'s athletic teams have been known as Gamecocks for almost 100 years.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> turn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> century (1900), after struggling for more than decade under<br />

numerous nicknames, <strong>the</strong> school's football team was first referred <strong>to</strong> un<strong>of</strong>ficially as<br />

"Gamecocks." In 1903, <strong>Columbia</strong>'s morning newspaper, The State, shortened <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>to</strong> one word <strong>and</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> teams have been Gamecocks ever since.<br />

Those early teams must have been a feisty <strong>and</strong> spirited group. A gamecock, <strong>of</strong><br />

course, is a fighting rooster known for its spirit <strong>and</strong> courage. A cock fight, which<br />

was a popular sport throughout <strong>the</strong> United States in <strong>the</strong> 19th century, would last<br />

until <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> combatants. Cock fighting has been outlawed by most<br />

states for humanitarian reasons, but it is still held surreptitiously in many areas.<br />

The State <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> has long been closely connected with <strong>the</strong><br />

breeding <strong>and</strong> training <strong>of</strong> fighting gamecocks. General Thomas Sumter, famed<br />

guerrilla fighter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary War, was known as "The Fighting<br />

Gamecock."<br />

ATHLETICS<br />

Who doesn’t love football, basketball, baseball or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r awesome<br />

athletic events on this campus? USC students have a lot <strong>of</strong> spirit <strong>and</strong> are always up<br />

for supporting <strong>the</strong>ir favorite athletic team.<br />

Where are <strong>the</strong> athletic events located?<br />

• Football – Williams Brice Stadium. Just FYI <strong>the</strong> stadium is named after a lady<br />

<strong>and</strong> you can’t miss this stadium as it rises above everything on Assembly.<br />

• Baseball – <strong>Carolina</strong> Stadium. The new baseball facility that has been called <strong>the</strong><br />

crown jewel among baseball stadiums across <strong>the</strong> country, sounds about right for a<br />

2-time CWS championship team!!<br />

• Basketball – Colonial Life Arena. Besides basketball, <strong>the</strong> Colonial Life Arena also<br />

hosts many concerts <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r events throughout <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

GameDay Attire<br />

When you head out <strong>to</strong> your first <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> football game, you<br />

might wonder, “Did a bunch <strong>of</strong> people just come from a wedding?” Fans get<br />

pretty dressed up for football games here in SEC (Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Conference)<br />

Country! Girls will wear black or garnet cocktail dresses <strong>and</strong> guys will wear<br />

khakis (sometimes with gamecocks embroidered on <strong>the</strong>m), collared shirts, <strong>and</strong><br />

bow-ties. Mostly members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek community will be <strong>the</strong> ones all decked out,<br />

but a majority <strong>of</strong> Gamecock fans do put some thought <strong>and</strong> effort in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Gameday appearance <strong>and</strong> attire. Of course, <strong>the</strong>re are plenty <strong>of</strong> people in jeans,<br />

shorts, T-shirts, <strong>and</strong> even some crazier outfits. Regardless <strong>of</strong> what you choose <strong>to</strong><br />

wear, make sure you are sporting garnet <strong>and</strong> black <strong>and</strong> nothing close <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

opposing team’s colors <strong>and</strong> definitely NOT orange!<br />

34

Tailgating<br />

Tailgating is ano<strong>the</strong>r big tradition at USC <strong>and</strong> any SEC school. On game day,<br />

every spot surrounding Williams-Brice Stadium will be covered with RVs, tents,<br />

trucks, <strong>and</strong> tables, many covered in Gamecock paraphernalia. Most fans arrive<br />

3-5 hours before a game <strong>to</strong> enjoy some good food, laughs, <strong>and</strong> a friendly game<br />

<strong>of</strong> cornhole. Many people will bring along a TV <strong>to</strong> catch up on <strong>the</strong> scores <strong>and</strong><br />

predictions for o<strong>the</strong>r games going on that day while <strong>the</strong>y wait for <strong>the</strong> USC game<br />

<strong>to</strong> start. Some people who don’t have tickets just come <strong>to</strong> tailgate <strong>and</strong> watch <strong>the</strong><br />

game from <strong>the</strong>ir TV outside <strong>of</strong> Williams-Brice Stadium.<br />

2001<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Gamecocks feature perhaps <strong>the</strong> most unique <strong>and</strong><br />

electrifying pregame entry in all <strong>of</strong> college football. In fact, The Sporting News<br />

rated USC's "2001" as <strong>the</strong> most exciting pregame entry in all <strong>of</strong> college<br />

football. As <strong>the</strong> minutes wind down on <strong>the</strong> game clock prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> opening kick<strong>of</strong>f,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gamecocks leave <strong>the</strong> locker room following final pregame instruction from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

coaching staff <strong>and</strong> assemble in <strong>the</strong> tunnel in <strong>the</strong> southwest corner <strong>of</strong> Williams-Brice<br />

Stadium. Then, as <strong>the</strong> crowd <strong>of</strong> more than 82,000 begins its roar <strong>of</strong> anticipation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> first notes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me song from "2001-A Space Odyssey" blare over <strong>the</strong><br />

stadium sound system. As <strong>the</strong> music continues, <strong>the</strong> enthusiasm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crowd is<br />

feverish. Finally, at just <strong>the</strong> exact moment, in perfect coordination with <strong>the</strong> music,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gamecocks hit <strong>the</strong> field running, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> stadium goes wild.<br />

This magical moment has been captured by national television, including ESPN,<br />

CBS, ABC, Jefferson-Pilot, ESPN-2, <strong>and</strong> WTBS, during those networks' telecasts <strong>of</strong><br />

games at Williams-Brice Stadium. It is indeed one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> special traditions in<br />

college football.<br />

The <strong>the</strong>me "2001" corresponds with <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s Bicentennial, which was<br />

celebrated eleven years ago.<br />

Football Cheers & Chants<br />

Here a couple common football cheers you will hear at football games. You’ll pick<br />

up on <strong>the</strong>m quickly, but here’s a headstart:<br />

U-S-C- Gooooooooooooooo Cocks!!!! (Through <strong>the</strong> game)<br />

Go! Fight! Win! Kick ass!!! (At <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> any kick-<strong>of</strong>f in every quarter)<br />

When USC gets a first down…<br />

Announcer: That’s ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Carolina</strong>…<br />

Audience: FIRST DOWN<br />

35

S<strong>and</strong>s<strong>to</strong>rm<br />

S<strong>and</strong>s<strong>to</strong>rm is an electrifying techno beat that is played throughout <strong>the</strong> game, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> first time it is played is <strong>the</strong> best <strong>and</strong> loudest! The moment it comes on<br />

throughout Williams-Brice Stadium, students jump out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir seats, if <strong>the</strong>y are not<br />

already up, <strong>and</strong> start jumping <strong>and</strong> bouncing in <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> waving a <strong>to</strong>wel put<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir seats by a local business. These couple minutes <strong>of</strong> energy <strong>and</strong> passion are<br />

just one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons <strong>the</strong> USC student section is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best <strong>and</strong> loudest in <strong>the</strong><br />

country!<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> is now home <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2010 <strong>and</strong> 2011 College<br />

World Series Champions. It was a thrill that our baseball team won in 2010, but<br />

even more exciting that <strong>the</strong>y won again for a second straight year. The baseball<br />

team’s season starts in late February <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y play at <strong>Carolina</strong> Stadium.<br />

Gamecock basketball, both men <strong>and</strong> women’s teams, always do pretty well. In<br />

January 2010 <strong>the</strong> men’s basketball team defeated number 1 Kentucky! Both<br />

teams play at <strong>the</strong> Colonial Life Arena.<br />

Make sure <strong>to</strong> check out o<strong>the</strong>r Gamecock teams while you are here such as men<br />

<strong>and</strong> women’s soccer, swimming <strong>and</strong> diving, <strong>and</strong> volleyball! For all things having <strong>to</strong><br />

do with USC sports, visit www.gamecocksonline.com<br />
