pedestrian precinct 

The pedestrian precinct is a 

meeting place and popular 

venue for events of all kinds. 

The pedestrian precinct is THE 

place for live music, shopping 

centres, boutiques, gift shops, 

cafés, restaurants, pubs and 

many other services. No wonder 

that Jyväskylä’s award-winning 

pedestrian precinct is ranked as 

one of Finland’s best. 

2) The Harju ridge – an oasis 

in the heart of the city 

The silhouette of the Harju 

ridge provides the backdrop 

for Jyväskylä’s city centre and 

it is the best known of the city’s 

green areas. Lined with flowers, 

the massive Nero steps lead 

you to the top of the ridge, from 

where wonderful views of the 

city and its attractive surroundings 

unfold. The area contains 

a network of footpaths, a sports 

ground, summer theatre and 

– in the Vesilinna water tower – 

Central Finland Natural History 

Museum, an observation platform 

and panoramic restaurant. 

3) Naissaari – 

on the rapids route 

Naissaari, an island enclave in 

the Jyväskylä suburb of Vaajakoski, 

is one of the region’s most 

legendary attractions. This atmospheric 

collection of wooden 

houses is flanked by rapids on 

both sides. Attractions include a 

café, the Vaajakoski lock on the 

Keitele-Päijänne canal, summer 

exhibitions in the Wanha Woimala

The market place on the corner 

of Väinönkatu and Yliopistonkatu

Fairy tales and adventure all year round 

Peukkula invites kids on a grand adventure. Open 

every day, the indoor adventure park as well as the 

outdoor park open from spring to autumn offer 

plenty to do and experience for children and adults 

alike. To round the day off, there’s a chance to take 

in a movie at Peukkula Kino. 

During the summer season the residents of the 

fairy tale village open the doors to their homes. 

In the streets of the village a play, a concert and 

fairy tales all form part of a summer’s day. After 

the show, fairy tale figures play with the kids. The 

homes in the village are free for children to play, 

engage in different activities and examine the 

many strange and different things belonging to the 

local residents. 

Our neighbours Viherlandia can be reached 

on foot along the Garden Walk.

Craft Museum of Finland 

Down in the darkness of the 

museum’s lower floor lives our 

very own sheep, Päkä, who 

dreams of having red mittens. 

But where does woollen yarn 

grow? Find out by following 

Päkä’s footprints and the audio 

guide. Päkä will also take you 

to Aistitila, where items can be 

touched, smelled and even tasted. 

In the Paja workshop on the 

second floor of the museum 

visitors can experience craft in 

hands-on fashion. Paja is open 

Tue-Sun 11-18. Small charge for 

materials. Free admission at all 

times for under 18s. On Fridays 

admission to the museum is free

An amusement park suitable for 

the whole family set in pleas- 

ant, garden-like surroundings. 

The park also contains lots of 

nice rides and things to do for 

very young fun-lovers. In the 

circus world hall visitors have 

the chance to play old amusement 

machines for free all day

exceptionally important 

evidence of a previous or 

existing culture”. 

The birth of Finnish culture, part 1 

Once upon a time... Finnish culture and the country’s renowned education system were 

born in the Jyväskylä Region. Our Central Finland forefathers took education and culture 

a great step forward, and from a very early stage Jyväskylä was referred to as the Athens 

of Finland. The world-famous architect Alvar Aalto would merit a feature film all of his 

own, and his handiwork can be seen in different parts of the region. Churches, museums 

and galleries, too, occupy an important role on the cultural map. 

Unesco world heritage sites – real attention-grabbers 

1) Petäjävesi Old Church 

– masterpiece of construction in wood 

Added to Unesco’s world heritage list in 1994 as 

a prime example of Nordic wooden architecture, 

Petäjävesi Old Church was completed in 1765. 

The church is a masterful demonstration of durable 

construction in wood. Legend has it that the 

church, like the chapel that stood earlier on the 

same spot, was built without permission. Small 

farmers in the area were not prepared to wait for 

approval from the Stockholm cathedral chapter 

and erected the cruciform church in 1763 in just 

35 days. 

2) Oravivuori triangulation tower 

– 19th century research station 

In Korpilahti, at the top of Oravivuori, lies Oravivuori 

triangulation tower, one of Finland’s six 

points in the Struve chain. This is a triangulation 

chain extending from the Black Sea to the Arctic 

Ocean that was used in the 19th century to establish 

the shape of the earth. On this spot a triangulation 

tower has been erected to commemorate 

the importance of the Oravivuori (or Puolakka) 

measuring station to the mapping of Finland.

in the Jyväskylä Region 

The Jyväskylä Region is home to a large number of buildings 

designed by the legendary architect Alvar Aalto spanning 

virtually every stage of his distinguished career. In the 

footsteps of the master we travel from classicism to functionalism, 

from architecture in brick to monumentalism. Aalto’s 

works can be explored on a go-as-you-please basis, or accompanied

Taulumäki church 

– church of angels 

Taulumäki Church is the principal 

church of Jyväskylä city 

parish. The church was completed 

in 1929 according to 

plans drawn up by architect 

Elsi Borg. The church is known 

as the church of angels due to 

the many depictions of angels 

found there. The church, built 

in neoclassicist style, is a long 

church with a west tower over 

30 metres in height. Taulumäki 

Church can hold approximately 

700 people. Mass is celebrated 

on Sundays at 18. The church is 

also popular as a concert venue.

Uurainen church – 

church of open hearts 

Uurainen Church was built 

in 1905 and designed by Yrjö 

Blomstedt. Its name stems from 

the church’s heart decorations, 

of which there are over 1 000. 

Uurainen museum of local history

the immediate vicinity of the 

church and bell tower. The 

museum is open only by prior

Toivakka church

Toivakka Church was built in 

1879-1882. The interior was refurbished 

in 1923, at which time 

architect Alvar Aalto designed, 

among other things, the frescos on 

the ceiling of the church depicting 

angels. The church’s current frescos 

were painted by Toivakka artist 

Pellervo Lukumies in 1972- 

1973. Redecoration of the church 

was carried out in the 1990s.

The gallery is printmaker Kirsi 

Neuvonen’s proofing workshop.

Galleria Becker 

Jyväskylä Artists’ Association is 

a professional association of visual 

artists from Central Finland, 

the main functions of which – the 

gallery, artotheque and residency 

apartment – all form part of 

the wooden Becker house, built in 

1903, in an area of culturo-historical 

importance close to the University 

of Jyväskylä, the Alvar 

Aalto museum and the Museum 

of Central Finland. Exhibitions 

change at three-week intervals, 

while prints, paintings, sculpture 

and photographs can be bought 

or rented from the artoteque. The

Aviation Museum of

The museum details the history 

of aviation and the Finnish air 

force from the beginning of the 

20th century to the present day:

The atmospheric Halonen building 

opposite the Travel Centre

photographic art and prints. The

graphic artists as well as art

workshop, where members of

Laukaa Church Museum 

Laukaa Church Museum was 

opened in spring 1997 and is located 

on the lower floor of Laukaa 

church. The church museum 

contains artefacts, pictures, 

maps and drawings as 

well as texts that recount the 

history of the parish of Laukaa 

from the 16th century to the present 

day. The centrepiece of the 

church museum consists of an 

exhibition devoted to Laukaa’s 

four old churches. For the first 

time at the museum visitors can 

view drawings produced with 

the guidance of an expert for the 

restoration of Laukaa’s oldest 

churches, contemporary drawings 

for which have not survived.

Uurainen Museum of 

Local History 

The museum of local history operates 

in a granary building built 

in 1850. The granary was transformed 

into a museum in 1964. 

The exhibition showcases the division 

of labour between men 

and women. Artefacts relating to 

rural life and the church. In autumn 

2006 the exhibition was 

brought up to date by adding 

photo and text placards. Open by

Hankasalmi museum 

village and Hallan Tupa 

The 12 buildings in the museum 

village located next to 

Hankasalmi’s wooden church 

make up a nineteenth century 

farmstead. The centrepiece 

of the museum village is Hallan 

Tupa, a large farmhouse 

now used for folklore and festive 

purposes, which is ideally 

suited for weddings with a 

difference, family celebrations 

and meetings all year round. It 

has room for 200 diners and is 

equipped with a professional 

kitchen. The museum village also 

features Finland’s largest ’savutupa’ 

– a chimneyless hut – 

a kitchen cabin, outbuildings, a 

granary, smoke sauna and cowshed. 

The old granary up by the 

church houses a fascinating collection 

of approximately 2 000

As the evenings draw in the city of Jyväskylä counters with a fabulous display of light. At 

the darkest time of the year dozens of permanently illuminated locations enhance the city’s 

architectural jewels and create an atmosphere that is unique, safe and attractive to the eye. 

Jyväskylä is a pioneer in Finnish urban illumination 

and simultaneously the international Cities 

of Light association’s northernmost member. 

Skilfully designed and implemented, the city’s illumination 

has won accolades also at the global 

level: Jyväskylä won the international urban illumination 

city.people.light. award in autumn 2009. 

The criteria for the competition win included ecological 

sustainability alongside aesthetic impression. 

Good design means a reduction in light pollution 

and savings in energy. 

One of the most exciting City of Light happenings

on island-strewn northern Lake Päijänne 

from the beginning of June until the end of 

August Tue-Sat 19-22. From 29.6.-19.8. Rhea also 

makes afternoon cruises Fri-Sun 15-18. The vessel 

is open to customers in the harbour every day

Riihivuori ski centre 

Riihivuori – fun from top to bottom! 

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Riihivuori 

has changed from a straightforward ski centre into 

a top year-round destination for the whole family. 

The snowmaking systems have been upgraded, 

the new extended ski hire shop is finished 

and the new, first-class restaurant facilities and 

covered scenic terraces with magnificent views 

of Lake Päijänne await the first customers of the 

new season. A new 60-seater Lapp teepee complete 

with barbecue facilities can be used by visitors 

free of charge. New accommodation options 

have also been completed in the immediate vicinity 

of the slopes. For the 2012 summer season Riihivuori 

will acquire a fantastic new fully-covered 

600-seater facility, the Aploodi theatre. The 

theatre season will kick off in the spring from 

May 1st with Mauri Kunnas’ musical play The 

Canine Kalevala. In mid-June the production will 

be The Thinker of Havukka-aho directed by 

Taava Hakala and starring Kunto Ojansivu. August 

will see the premiere of Reijo Mäki’s play Vares. 

This comedy thriller will be directed by Jussi 

Myllymäki, with Jukka Salmela and Kunto Ojansivu

Jyväskylä sport services 

Sport services offer extensive facilities for the enjoyment 

of indoor and outdoor recreational disciplines. 

The largest concentration of sports facilities is in the 

Hippos area, which contains the Hippos hall, multipurpose 

sports hall, three ice rinks and the AaltoAlvari 

spa complex. The main arena for athletics and 

football is the stadium on the Harju ridge close to 

the city centre. The multipurpose sports hall Kuokkalan 

Graniitti is also among the most popular locations 

for physical recreation. For fans of outdoor 

recreation and hiking the region has over 500 km of 

fitness and ski trails as well as recreational areas in 

the heart of magnificent nature.

Scenic routes from the depths of the forest to the highest ridge 

1) Laukaa’s Metso Trail takes in a huge variety of terrain over dozens of kilometres. A hot drink 

and a picnic can be enjoyed at one of the many lean-to shelters to be found along the route. For the 

adventurous a night under the stars is an experience never to be forgotten! 

2) Korpilahti’s Vaarunvuori hills, rising majestically above Lake Päijänne, constitute one of the 

most valuable areas in Central Finland in terms of bio-diversity. The nature conservation areas are 

home to 70 endangered species.

Jyväskylä

Laukaa 

Vigorously growing Laukaa is currently home to more than 

18 200 people. The municipality consists of four distinct areas, 

Laukaa centre, Leppävesi, Lievestuore and Vihtavuori as well 

as numerous smaller villages of great character. 

Did you know that… Laukaa is bisected by the Keitele canal, 

which joins Lakes Keitele and Päijänne and is highly popular with 

boaters? Laukaa is famous for its free-flowing rapids, such as

Muurame, with just over 9 000 inhabitants, is Central Finland’s

close to Jyväskylä that puts emphasis on the quality of 

everyday life – take a look, for instance, at the Pienmäki residential

Did you know that… Revontuli Golf and Häkä ski centre are 

both situated in Hankasalmi? The Kihveli Soikoon skiffle festival is 

staged annually on the third weekend in July, with artists including 

local band Werner Bros creating a unique atmosphere.

Petäjävesi 

A vigorous, growing municipality of over 4 000 inhabitants, 

Petäjävesi can offer excellent services in a pleasant rural environment. 

Take a look at the building plots on offer in the new Kaksonen 

residential area located close to the centre on highway 23. 

Did you know that… The Wanha Witonen (‘Old Fiver’) canoeing 

route, which starts in Petäjävesi and finally enters Lake Päijänne in 

the Arvaja area of Jämsä, got its name from the five mark note introduced 

in 1909 which was designed by architect Eliel Saarinen? The 

note is illustrated with a scene from the route.

Toivakka 

Uurainen is a young-minded, growing municipality of rough- 

Located on the eastern side of Lake Päijänne, Toivakka has a
